Multi-read content how tall are bedroom doors

Photo: istockphoto.com

Q: We just bought a house that was built in the 1960s and is going to be remodeled to bring it up to date. Our plans include adding several new doors and we were wondering what size would fit best. Are there standard door guides?

A:Congratulations on buying a home! Not all older homes have doors of a similar size, as many were built before local building codes were established, and doors were often made by hand. Today, doors come in standard sizes and are stocked at DIY stores and home centers. In addition to stocking standard door sizes, many stores also carry a few alternate sizes, which can be used in certain areas of the home.

There are standard door sizes and a number of replacement doors available.

Interior doors have the following standard dimensions in height, width and thickness:

  • The standard interior door height is 80 inches.
  • This is the most common height for driveway doors that lead from room to room. An 80 inch door is called a 6/8 door (pronounced “six eight”) because it is 6’8″ tall.
  • In stock you will also find a slightly shorter door of 78 inches.
  • Called door 6/6, it is intended for cabinets and utility doors.
  • The standard interior door width is 32 inches.
  • This is the minimum width required for a driveway gate.
  • You can also find a few narrower doors in stock, including 30-inch, 28-inch, and 24-inch.
  • The code allows these narrower widths as closets and utility doors.
  • You can find 36 inch wide doors in stock.
  • These more extensive options are Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant and are a popular choice for homes with
  • residents with reduced mobility
  • .
  • The standard interior thickness is 1⅜ inches.
  • This is the most common and sometimes the only interior door thickness available from home repair shops.
  • Some stores may offer alternative door thicknesses of 1½ inches and 1¾ inches.
  • These are slightly thicker than standard and are usually insulated or made from hardwood.
  • Standard interior door panel thicknesses on prehung doors are 4-9/16 inches.
  • A door clamp is a frame that attaches to the wall and supports the door through hinges. This thickness is designed for installation in a standard two-by-four wall (constructed with actual 1½ inch by 3½ inch studs).
  • The thickness of the replacement upright is 6-9/16 inches.
  • It is designed to fit two by six walls (composed of studs that are actually 1⅕ inches by 5 ½ inches).

Measuring a new door is a simple process.

Most of the time when you buy a door you will want a pre-hung door, which means it comes with the bracket (trap) included. Another type of door, called “panel door”, has only one door, without a lever.

Measurement for a Hungarian front door

  1. Open the door and
  2. measure
  3. from the inside of one side jam to the inside of the opposite side – this is where the door sides will close when closed. Write down the number.
  4. With the door still open, measure from the top inside the clamp (where the door will fit when closed) to the floor. Subtract ¾ inch and write down the number. The ¾ inch subtraction is for the flooring.
  5. Measure the thickness of the door itself and write the number on the paper. Bring all three numbers with you when you visit the home improvement center.

Measurement for a slab door

  1. When measuring to replace a sheet metal door, measure the width, height and thickness of the door itself – not the clamp.

Photo: istockphoto.com

Choose a pre-hung door with a slightly smaller measurement.

This way, you or a professional carpenter (you’ll need basic carpentry skills to hang the door) can fit the new door frame into the rough opening of the old door. Usually some shims need to be added for a perfect fit. Avoid buying a pre-hung door that measures slightly larger than your existing door if it’s a DIY project. In order to install the doorstop, part of the rough frame (in the wall) will need to be removed and since this can alter the load-bearing structure of the wall, this is the job of a professional.

Or, choose a door with a slightly larger gauge.

If you only replace the door, not the guardrail, if you buy a smaller door, you will end up with a gap between the door and the guardrail. Instead, purchase a slightly larger slab door and then cut it to the exact size of the existing door. As a DIY project, fitting a sliding door will take time, as it takes precision to make the necessary indentations to adjust the hinge and to install a new backplate that will fit snugly over the existing door . Although it seems simplerinstall a slab door, it’s actually more complicatedinstall a pre-hung door.

If you want more wall space, consider a narrower doorway.

Large doors can overwhelm small rooms, so if space is limited, narrower doors can provide a cleaner look and add extra wall space. This involved removing the old door and railing and reconfiguring the raw frame on the wall so that a new pre-hung door would fit into the space. This project is within the reach of a handyman with basic carpentry knowledge.

Consider remodeling with a wider doorway if the doorway is too narrow.

It can be difficult (if not impossible) to move large pieces of furniture through small doorways, so making them larger may be a must when renovating an older home. You can find a few 36-inch doors in stock, but your best bet is to order custom doors from the home center. These doors should be installed by a competent professional as the rough opening in the wall will need to be widened.

You can also order a custom sized front hanging door.

If your measurements don’t match the standard door sizes available in stores, but you’re not ready to expand or shrink the existing door frame, know that the manufacturers will make these pre-hung doors to your exact specifications. If you go this route, your door will fit snugly into its stopper and open and close easily. This allows you to remove the old trim and door trim, install a new one, then reinstall the original cover and trim and paint or repaint the new door to match.

Doors are typically 36 inches wide.

Although a door width of 36 inches is oversized for an interior door, it is the standard size forfront door. However, the standard height remains the same at 80 inches. Most doors are also slightly thicker than interior doors, with a standard thickness of 1¾ inches. These slightly wider doors allow you to move larger appliances and furniture inside. Standard overlay thicknesses are similar to interior door panels, 4-9/16 inches or 6-9/16 inches to accommodate two-by-four and two-by-six walls, respectively.
