How do birds design their nests? Let’s look at some nest styles and see why a bird would choose one or another. Please subscribe to continue learning what makes life AWESOME:

Bird nests come in a HUGE diversity of forms, but we’re looking at eleven broad categories of nests. Then we talk about why some nests are “better” than others, and why a bird might have one type of nest.

We look at:

No Nests (some penguins)

Scrape Nests (shorebirds)

Burrow Nests (kingfishers)

Low Platform Nests (grebes)

Elevated Platform Nests (cranes)

Cup Nests (robins)

Suspended Cup Nests (vireos)

Pendulous Cup Nests (orioles)

Cavity Nests (parrots)

Complex Elevated Nests (weavers)

Acknowledging that there are WAY more specific examples of nests, this gives a good overview of nest forms.

There is a strong pressure to have a simple nest, because simple doesn’t take as much energy or time. But there is also a strong pressure to stay away from predators, which leads to greater nest success.

So all these forms are a compromise somewhere on the spectrum between “Easy” and “Safe”. There are other factors as well, but I think that is the best model to explain why there are so many nest forms.
