When To Begin Raking Your Lawn In The Spring

When To Begin Raking Your Lawn In The Spring

Mowing the lawn in the spring is a great excuse to get outside and enjoy the warm weather. But if you start raking too soon, you could damage your lawn. So how do you know when to rake in the spring? In this article, I’ll give you some tips for determining if it’s too early to rake your lawn and how to know when it’s safe to start.

When To Rake Your Lawn In The Spring

Is it too early to leave my lawn?

Every spring, I see many of my neighbors come out too early to mow the lawn. Believe me, I understand.

After the long winter months, you want nothing more than to get out and start working in the yard! I come to you right away!

But in early spring the grass is still dormant and turning too early can cause damage by ripping out strong blades and dead grass.

Yellow spots on grass in spring`Yellow spots on the grass in spring

If you plow the lawn too early, the dormant grass will not be strong enough to withstand the pull of the rake.

Although the air temperature can be very warm in early spring, the ground is cold and can remain frozen in many places.

Also, the ground is very wet with all the melted snow, and can become saturated. You should not mow when the ground is cold, wet and frozen.

There may be visible lesions of the mole, desalination chemicals or sugar salts, or you might see snow mold growing on the grass, making it hard to resist the urge to scratch it.

But I highly recommend waiting to see if spring is here before doing any type of lawn maintenance.

You should also stop fertilizing your lawn or doing any other form of spring lawn care such as patching or seeding too early, which is fine.

Popular questions about when should i rake my lawn

when should i rake my lawn?

The best time to rake dead spots is when your lawn is starting to turn green again around mid-April. This way, you can target areas of your lawn that are actually impacted. Raking right after winter will be less targeted as most of the grass will still be brown, regardless of if it is dead or healthy.

When should I rake my lawn UK?

Spring
If this is shade from the crown of a tree, then it is best to rake it in Spring – from late March through all of April. The tree crowns are at their thinnest and they allow maximum sunlight at that exact time. This will ensure good growth and the best opportunity for the new grass seeds to start growing.

Is raking the lawn good?

Regular raking should keep the lawn free from rotting leaves, which can sometimes kill the grass plants. Raking can also help break up any thatch that you have. On the whole raking is good for your lawn, but alternatives such as scarifying, and brushing can be used as well.

Should I rake lawn in spring?

Spring raking removes lingering fall leaves and grass blades that did not survive winter. Left alone, these dead blades add to your lawn’s thatch layer. Raking also loosens matted grass clumps caused by snow mold, which can smother new growth. Use a spring-tine rake with a strong upward pull to remove dead grass.

Can I scarify my lawn in January?

JANUARY OR FEBRUARY – SCARIFYING IN THE WINTER MONTHS IS NOT RECOMMENDED! Your lawn is in hibernation. The cold weather, frozen soil and generally frosted grass will not take kindly to any mechanical work at this time of year. Scarifying in the cold winter months will damage your lawn and it is best left alone.

Does raking dead grass help it grow?

Raking for New Growth

Dead grass should be raked away, but it won’t stimulate growth, because if the grass is completely dead all the way to the roots, it can’t produce new growth and the bare patch will remain. To fill in the bare spot, you’ll have to prepare the area for reseeding or laying new sod.

Is raking dead grass necessary?

In general, raking is important to prevent unhealthy build of thatch and dead grass, but it is equally important not to get rid of healthy grass that looks dead after a long winter.

Should I rake before mowing?

Whether you opt to rake or mow over leaves, it’s always better to act before rain arrives and transforms dry leaves into a soaked, clumping mat. Wet leaves won’t chop well with a mower, and they tend to clog rakes and leaf vacuums.

When should you first mow your lawn in the spring?

When to First Mow Your Lawn in the Spring…
  1. Wait until temperatures have been consistently reaching at least 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Trying to cut grass that hasn’t fully thawed from its winter nap can damage the tender blades.
  2. Make sure your grass is dry. …
  3. Determine that your grass has reached the proper height.

Can I rake my lawn in March?

Wait until you have done the first two cuts in spring. This means the grass is starting to grow so it’s then safe to start the raking process. You can apply iron sulphate (soluble iron) reasonably often, so applying now or before raking and again afterwards will be highly beneficial.

Can I scarify my lawn in May?

Answer: Late spring (mid-April onwards) and autumn (September) are good times to scarify your lawn, particularly if it is not too dry. You must scarify your lawn only when your grass is growing strongly.

Can I scarify my lawn in April?

If you’ve not already done so, April is the ideal time to tackle scarification. Scarifying pulls moss and dead matter out of the base of your lawn. It lets the air flow around the plant and helps with drainage. Just like a good spring clean.

What does a lawn look like after scarifying?

It’s patchy, uneven in colour and quite dull. On the right, you can see the lawn after it’s been scarified. The lawn is much healtier and the colour is brighter and more even! It’s true that your scarified lawn might look terrible for a period, but once it’s recovered you’ll be grateful that you got it done.

In the spring time you’ll see an awful lot of videos about dethatching or power raking the lawn. This is something that can have major health benefits to a lawn that has a thatch problem. It can also cause damage of the lawn doesn’t need a mechanical intervention.

In many cases the machines that you see being used are not actually making a huge benefit on the actual thatch layer. They are very effective at removing dead debris from grass clippings or from winter time shed, but not necessarily in breaking down the thatch underneath. Frequent trips will make an impact over time.

Aeration and topdressing, managing fertilizer applications, mowing properly, reducing insecticides when not needed and watering correctly will reduce thatch in your lawn.

In this video I cover off how thatch forms, what it is, and how to get rid of it. Please make sure to leave a comment or any question you may have about this particular topic.
