Multi-read content how to use vinegar to clean washing machine

When was the last time you deep cleaned your washing machine? Honestly, I spent 34 years not knowing that was the case – then my husband and I bought a house. The day we moved in, we found everything in perfect condition, ready to use, except for the washer and dryer. I’m not kidding, when I opened the lid to take a look at my “new” washing machine, I found a cobweb. Spider web! Plus a whole bunch of cute clothes left for months.

After debating between burning down my house and buying a new machine, I finally decided that washing it with vinegar was the better, cheaper option. And, luckily, it worked. Here’s how to clean your washing machine quickly and easily with vinegar.

How to clean a washing machine with vinegar

Did you know that clothes smell bad if you leave them in the washing machine too long? Turns out your machine will smell the same if it’s not cleaned periodically. Standing water and dirt get trapped in your washing machine, promoting the growth of bacteria and strange odors (this is more common on some models than others). And a dirty washing machine won’t do a very good job of cleaning your clothes – so it’s important that you keep it clean and bacteria-free.

All you need to restore your washing machine to how it was before is white vinegar. Thanks to its high concentration of acetic acid, white vinegar is a powerful cleaner, killing germs, eliminating odors and removing dirt and grease. And it does most of the cleaning for you: just fill the machine with water, turn on the wash cycle, and let the machine do the rest.

While you can clean both top-loading and front-loading washers with vinegar, be sure to check the manufacturer’s recommendations first. Some models should only be cleaned with bleach, in which case avoid vinegar altogether and follow these instructions using 1/2 cup bleach.

Tutorial

Cleaning washing machine1. Select the hot water setting if your machine has one. Otherwise, use the “white” / “heavy” cycle option on your machine. (You must also select “extra wash” if your machine has this option.)

2. For top loaders, add 4 cups of white vinegar to the water. For front loaders, add 2 cups of white vinegar to the bleach compartment

3. Close the door and let the machine agitate. If you have a top loader, it helps to open the lid after about 5 minutes and let the vinegar sit for an hour (at which point you should close the lid and let the cycle complete). The longer it is left, the deeper it can sanitize your machine.

For front-loading machines, simply let the cycle complete.

Cleaning washing machine with vinegar4. While the machine is running, use a microfiber cloth to wipe down the outside of the machine and wipe down the control panel.

5. Follow with an additional hot water rinse, either by manual setting or by pre-programming your machine from the start.

6. Once done, soak your microfiber towel in white vinegar and wipe down the bleach and fabric softener drawers as well as the inside of the lid and hinges. Take extra care to remove detergent residue from nooks and crannies.

From now on, it is best to leave the door open between loads to prevent moisture buildup and to clean the machine thoroughly every month.
