Multi-read content how to clean a white mattress

Follow this guide on how to clean your mattress for a good night’s sleep. Includes general mattress cleaning tips, stain removal guides, and mattress care ideas.

Black farmhouse style bed frame with white bedding and blue accents.

Why wash your mattress?

Regular cleaning of the mattress is important to prevent the accumulation of dust mites and dead skin cells. A clean mattress also helps you get a good night’s sleep {and who doesn’t need one?}. While we can all benefit from a clean mattress, it’s especially important if you’re prone to sensitivities, asthma, or allergies. Mattresses in general contain the most allergens in our homes, including mold, bacteria, viruses, and dust mites. I will not participate in everythingunpleasant informationout there about dust mites {and their poop!} in our mattresses because, honestly, I don’t want to think about it too much. Let’s say we want to reduce these people as much as possible. 🙂

How to clean your mattress

Before you start on the mattress, remove all bedding and mattress covers from the bed and wash them in hot water (above 130 F). This will kill all mites. Add 1/2 to 1 cup of vinegar to your laundry to deodorize and soften your sheets. If possible, open windows to let in fresh air and light while you clean.

Late winter or early spring is usually the best time to dust mite clean your mattress, as this will kill any dust mites that survived the winter and reduce their numbers during the summer months. If you regularly use and wash your mattress cover, cleaning it once a year should be sufficient {you may want to clean it more often if you have allergies}. Otherwise, you should clean the mattress every month.

Cleaning possibilities

  • Sprinkle baking soda on the mattress and let it sit for at least 30 minutes {the longer the better} to absorb odors. Using the upholstery attachment on your vacuum cleaner, vacuum the mattress, paying particular attention to stitches and crevices.
  • If you have specific stained areas that you need to treat, do so before performing the cleaning options above, but vacuum the mattress to remove any dirt or grime before treating the stained area. Remember, the sooner you treat the stain, the easier it is to remove! See below for specific stain treatments.
  • After cleaning your mattress, make sure the mattress
  • COMPLETELY DRY
  • before putting the blankets and sheets back on. Any moisture will promote the growth of mold, mildew and bacteria. Let your mattress dry in the sun or run a fan for at least a few hours until it dries. The dryer also works if you only spot treated stains. If you can’t get the mattress out, you can pull it out of the bed and wedge it with an open window to allow more air to circulate.

Tineco handheld vacuum used to clean a mattress.

Cleaning possibilities

  • If you really need a deep clean {and weather permitting!} Take the mattress out in the morning on a sunny day to allow the mattress to breathe. Place a clean tarp or drop cloth on the floor and place your mattress on it. Sunlight is a natural cleanser and can kill bacteria that hide in mattresses.
  • Now for the fun part… Grab a club, golf club, 2×4, etc. and let your mattress beat well for 10-20 minutes. It will help you get rid of dead skin cells, dust mites and their excrement, hair and also give you a great workout!
  • Let your mattress rest in the sun during the day and consider turning it over for half a day. You might want to give it a quick swipe before putting it back on at the end of the day.

How to remove stains from your mattress

If you have stains on your mattress, follow these general stain removal instructions. For more stubborn stains, see specific stain removal tips below.

  • When dealing with stains on the mattress, keep the use of detergent to a minimum to avoid oversaturating the mattress. You don’t want the inside of the mattress to get wet, as this can cause mold or damage the wood inside the mattress.
  • It is important to treat mattress stains as soon as possible. To avoid spreading the stain, blot {don’t rub or rub!} on any excess liquid or moisture that has migrated from the stain.
  • outside
  • of the stain inwards. Use pressure to remove as much liquid as possible.
  • For common stains, you can use an upholstery cleaner and follow the directions on the bottle. Again, make sure you don’t over-wet the mattress.
  • To help remove odors, sprinkle baking soda on top. For a light, fresh scent, you can add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to baking soda and mix before dusting {this is also the mix I use for
  • Refresh our carpets
  • }. Leave to rest for a few hours. Drain off any leftover baking soda.

Hydrogen peroxide and baking soda to clean your mattress.

Blood spots

Apply {3%} hydrogen peroxide to the bloodstain. {NOTE: Hydrogen peroxide can bleach fabrics, so check color fastness if you are concerned}. You can either spray it on with a vaporizer if you are treating a larger area of skin, or apply it with a cotton swab for smaller rashes. Use a clean white cloth to soak up the water while bubbling. Once it has stopped bubbling, let it sit for another 5-10 minutes. Spray lightly with COLD water {stain may solidify if using hot water due to blood protein} and blot until dry. Repeat if necessary. Salt water spray or dish soap mixed with water {1 tbsp. Dish soap and 2 cups of cold water} can also be used to treat fresh blood stains.

Urine stains

Use a clean, white towel to blot up excess liquid. Prepare a 2 tbsp cleaning solution. baking soda, 1 teaspoon of MSG. dish soap and 1 cup 3% hydrogen peroxide {hydrogen peroxide breaks down quickly, so use it right away and throw away anything you don’t use}. You can use a spray bottle or a solution-dampened cloth to apply the solution to the mattress. Leave the mixture on for up to 24 hours, then vacuum or wipe off the baking soda residue. Repeat the process if the odor is still present, especially for pet stains. You can also try blotting the stain with a cloth soaked in vinegar.

Smell

If your mattress odors are not eliminated with the general cleaning instructions above, you can purchase a plastic mattress bag {used by movers} from a company that specializes in moving or closing boxes. Sprinkle baking soda all over the mattress and place it in an airtight bag for 1-2 days. Remove the bag and vacuum.

Mattress Care Tips

The following tips are easy to follow and can help prolong the life and health of your mattress. Just make it your regular routine when cleaning your sheets regularly.

Black farmhouse style bed frame with white bedding and blue accents.

Vacuum.

Vacuum your mattress when you change your sheets {or at least every 3 months} to reduce dust {it’s much more efficient if you have a HEPA rated vacuum cleaner}

Use a mattress topper.

They can help protect against dust mites and other allergens, and are easy to remove and wash. It will also reduce the need for regular vacuuming of the mattress.

Invest in a mattress.

They are placed on the mattress cover and under the bed sheet. Besides improving comfort, they also create an extra barrier between you and the mattress and can be easily removed and washed. If you have young children, using a waterproof mattress is always a good idea for “accidents” that can happen at night.

Wash bedding regularly.

Wash bedding and mattress covers regularly in hot water (above 130F) to kill dust mites. Add 1/2 cup of white vinegar to remove odors and soften linens. Undress in bed if you are on vacation. This provides a great opportunity to really clean your mattress.

Rotate your mattress.

Rotate your mattress every 3 months or so. This allows your mattress to wear more evenly and can help extend its life. {REMARK:Rotating your mattress means turning it 180 degrees {always keeping the top up}. Most new mattresses are NOT designed to be flipped, so check your manual!}

Set your bedroom environment.

Since dust mites like warm, humid, and dark environments, try to keep the humidity in your room below 50% and the room temperature below 70 degrees when possible. Vacuum the room regularly to reduce dust. A lightly sprayed surface with water before dusting can remove up to 90% of airborne dust, and HEPA-rated vacuums do the best job of vacuuming without throwing dust back into the air.

Check the label

Be careful when using deodorant sprays or those designed to reduce odor. Often these products do not eliminate the odor and simply mask it with stronger chemical odors. Some of them contain chemicals that have not been tested for safety and contain carcinogens. Instead, look for simple, natural, and biodegradable options.
