How long do basil plants live? What is the lifespan of the basil plant?

A basil plant only lives about five to six months in a warm climate, even under the best conditions.

In colder climates, especially if left outdoors, the life of the plant will be shortened. If you want to create the best possible conditions for your plants, read on.

Conditions Affecting the Lifespan of Basil Plants

basil farm

The lifespan of the basil plant mainly depends on its environment.

Basil is believed to have originated in India, the Hunan region of China, or Thailand. All of these regions are hot, humid, sunny and monsoonal. If you can replicate these conditions, your basil plants will thrive and live long, healthy lives.

Sprinklers

Water the plant two to three times a week. Make sure that at least one of these waters is watered deeply and abundantly. For basil kept in a pot, remember to water the bottom.

If your plant is growing in the ground or in a plastic or glazed pot, you may need to water a little less. If your basil is growing in a porous, unglazed or natural terracotta pot, you may need to water a little more.

Wet the ground and try to avoid the leaves. In some cases, water droplets on the leaves can cause infection, burn the leaves, or cause mold.

Temperature

A temperature between 70 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit (or 21 to 32 degrees Celsius) is ideal.

If you want your basil plant to produce a higher quality essential oil that gives it a more intense aroma, keep the plant at a higher temperature.

Lighting

Make sure your plants get six hours of direct sunlight each day. It can also tolerate some shade, so don’t worry if you can’t provide a full six hours.

Ground condition

Do your best to replicate the terraforming conditions of Southeast Asia. The ideal soil is a light loam, not too rich in nutrients and well drained.

According toUniversity of Minnesota, the best pH level is around 6.5; although a small variation is accepted by the basil plant.

Basil Plant Life Cycle Explained

First step: germination

Basil plants take seven to ten days to germinate, although cooler soil conditions can extend this period, taking up to two weeks to germinate.

Step Two: True Leaves

You can see the first true leaves 14-21 days after the plant germinates. This is about three to five weeks after being planted.

Step Three: The Ability to Transplant Basil Seedlings

It’s probably safe to transplant seedlings when they have two or three true leaves and are about 6 inches tall. This usually happens about six weeks after germination.

Fourth step: pruning and harvesting

pinching basil

You can start harvesting basil after the plant has 4-6 leaves. This usually happens more than two months after germination.

The best part about pruning basil plants is that you can eat what you prune.

It is best to cut off about two leaves after growing two to three sets of leaves. theThe more you prune and harvest, the denser the tree will bewill grow to become.

Step Five: Bolt

The basil plant will start producing seeds when the temperature drops or when the plant is 5 to 6 months old. At this point, the plant will bud or flower and start bearing seeds.

Stage Six: Mature and Complete Death

Basil plants begin to die soon after they flower and set seed. Usually this happens at 5 months of age if raised outdoors, or at 6 months of age if kept indoors or in a greenhouse.

If your tree experiences cold weather, insufficient humidity, or not enough sunlight, it may die prematurely.

Does basil age?

blooming basil

Basil does not live long, especially compared to other plants. Even under the best of conditions, basil will seed and then die at just six months.

If you’ve always wanted to keep a basil plant, be sure to sow consecutively or keep propagating new basil branches.

Is basil a houseplant perennial?

Keeping a basil plant indoors only extends its lifespan to a maximum of six months. Basil is only an annual; it will never last long even if kept indoors.

Luckily, this plant is easy to grow, easy to propagate, and produces delicious new leaves quickly.

How long can indoor basil live?

hydroponic basil

Indoor basil will live for a maximum of six months.

This is an improvement over the three to five months when it can survive outdoors, but it’s still not a perennial even with the best care.

If you keep your basil indoors, provide light for the plant to grow or keep it in a sunny location without drafty windows. Basil is an exceptional plant in hydroponic gardens, so keep that in mind for your indoor setup.

Does basil grow back every year?

herb garden with basil plant

Sweet basil does not regrow every year, but it is a prolific seed producer. You won’t get the exact same cultivar next year, but you might have a few of its seedlings to fill its place.

A sweet basil plant will produce several new volunteer basil plants the next year if left alone. Outdoor basil plants can also propagate quite well.

That said, some types of basil are mostly inedible, such as Thai basil and purple basil, which are considered perennials. These variations can live to see two, three or sometimes four seasons in your garden.

Basil is a wonderful addition to your home or garden, it’s sure to brighten up your space and deliciously garnish any summer treats you create.

With good care, you can keep your basil plants for up to six months. Be sure to check out our other basil care articles below!

Video tutorials about how long do basil plants live

keywords: #cuttings, #moreplants, #grow, #eat, #quick, #quickly, #infinite, #cheap

In this video I demonstrate how quickly you can go from one Basil plant to an almost infinite supply. I go from one plant to 8 in 30 days and then to 18 in 60 days. In one year using this method you could have thousands of Basil plants all from the original mother plant.

I use time-lapse photography to document the growth at every stage.

Basil propagates very easily from cuttings and within a month those cuttings are established plants which can then be used to take more cuttings. At each stage of making new plants there are always plenty of leaves which can be used for cooking. Once you get enough plants to provide for your needs you can stop taking cuttings and just harvest the stems as you need them.
