Clean the front loading washing machine with bleach

Remember that when handling bleach, you must wear protective gloves and work in a well-ventilated area. Bleach is extremely effective on surfaces due to its hospital-grade ingredients, so it should be used with caution.

When cleaning a front-loading washing machine, there are four areas to focus on:

  • Detergent drawer
  • drumming
  • Rubber seal
  • Outside

The first step:Start by cleaning the detergent drawer. To remove soap scum that may have dried into the crevices under the plastic, remove it completely and soak it in half a bucket of hot water diluted with one-fifth cup of bleach for about an hour. . Use an old toothbrush to remove any stubborn limescale or mold before rinsing out the drawer and putting it in the washing machine.

Second step :Then run a drum cycle with bleach to clean the tub. Normally, there will be no signs of dirt or mold inside your machine, but you may smell something milky, which indicates bacteria. Simply add half a cup of bleach to your laundry tub and run a normal wash cycle with hot water to kill germs and deodorize. Run another rinse cycle to remove any bleach residue.

Third step:Open the door and press the rubber pad to get objects like hairpins or coins that could get stuck underneath. You should also wipe off dirt and soap scum before disinfecting the area with a bleach spray (we recommend White King Remover Spray). If you have mold here, bleach is the only thing that will kill it. Use a toothbrush to scrub hard-to-reach areas and rinse everything off with a clean cloth and warm water when you’re done.

Step Four:Clean the exterior surface of the machine. Here, hot soapy water is fine, as bleach can be too abrasive for the surface, especially if you have a stainless steel machine.

Tip: To prevent mildew from forming under the rubber seal around the door, allow the door to dry by keeping it slightly open after each wash. You can also wipe the area down with a rag to prevent mold spores from building up in the grooves.

Clean the top loading washing machine with bleach

Although top-loading carts aren’t susceptible to mold around the door, they can still attract germs and bacteria. Water tends to sit at a set level in the upper feeders, causing soap buildup in that area (like the dirty ring you see in a bathtub). Also, if someone in your family is sick, you should disinfect the drum with bleach as a precaution.

Cleaning a top-loading washing machine is a little easier because you only need to focus on three areas:

  • Detergent drawer
  • drumming
  • Outside

The first step:If your top loader has a removable detergent drawer, soak and clean it as above. If you don’t have a drawer, you can skip this step.

Second step :Fill the drum with hot water and half a cup of bleach. Soak it for an hour to remove all traces of mildew, soap scum and grime, before running a hot wash cycle to sanitize the pipes. Run a final rinse cycle to remove all traces of bleach from the tub (you don’t want the tub to stain your clothes).

Third step:When this cycle is complete, wipe down the exterior of the machine with warm, soapy water, paying particular attention to the knobs, knobs, lid, and sides. Don’t forget to wipe down the inside of the box lid, as your wash cycle misses this area and dirt often collects there. And you are done!

Tip: Most of your wash cycles use cold or lukewarm water, which is better for your clothes, but not as good at killing bacteria. Running a long heat cycle once a week will help keep your machine clean.

Washing machines are clean, right? Well not always. Those loads of grubby clothes can take their toll on your machine and you may find it doesn’t work as well as it used to. But by giving your washing machine a bit of TLC you’ll get rid of any mould and bacteria that have built up and get it back to peak performance. And the good news is it’s really simple to do. Presenter Laura Crombie shows you how…

To start with, remove the detergent drawer from the front of the machine – check your manual if you’re not sure how to do this. Soak the drawer in hot, soapy water and, using an old toothbrush, scrub away any soap build up or mould. Rinse thoroughly, and dry with a tea towel. Before you put it back in, clean out the cavity as it’s likely there’s some hidden mould there, too.

My top tip is to leave both the detergent drawer and washing machine draw open in between wash cycles, this will allow air to circulate and prevent mould from growing.

Next, use a soap cloth to wipe around the rubber seals of the washing machine. Be careful when you lift them away from the metal as you may accidentally rip or unseal them. If necessary, gently remove any stubborn grime with a toothbrush.

To clean the machine itself, you can use white vinegar and bicarbonate of soda, or bleach. Pour 230ml of white vinegar directly into the drum and pop two tablespoons of bicarb into the detergent draw then run on a hot wash of at least 60 degrees. If you’d prefer to use bleach, pop half a cup into the drum and half into the draw and then run on a hot wash. Whichever you choose, run a rinse cycle afterwards to make sure there’s nothing left that could damage your next load.

And there you have it – a washing machine clean enough to clean your clothes!
