When hanging heavy mirrors, bracing tall furniture, walling in a new TV, or erecting a bracket, you should start with the strong support of a 2×4 wall nail. Firmly, simply nail the nail into the drywall. on a lightweight wall, but these ties can cause the wall to collapse if weighed down – unlike the wooden studs that exist to hold drywall in place. There are too many risks to be less than 100% sure of the location of the educational center. Why risk a kitchen shelf full of dishes or baked goods tipping over at any moment because you miscalculated the location of the latches?

Luckily, the real stud finder is easy to fool and even easier to use.old fashioned research method, which can be useful in small situations. Read on to find out how to use the stud finder so no worrieswall project.

How to use the Stud .finder

Learning to use a pile finder is an important skill for any homeowner. You will find it invaluable when working on many DIY projects.

BEFORE YOU START

Type recognitionrivet finderyou picked up. Is it a magnetic stud finder or does it read the density of the wall? Magnetic nail finders will read screws and nails behind the wall, but if they are the focal point is still a guess. If your project is valuable or heavy, it’s best to use a density-reading stud finder, the center of which will show the edges of your studs. Whichever category you choose in the home appliance store, the way you use the search engine does not change, only the information displayed is different.

STEP 1: Locate your hanger.

how to use a stud finder

Photo: istockphoto.com

Decide where you want to hang your stuff. Know the position of the vertex andhow far does it take to climb. This is the height at which you want to find wall studs. Get rid of any nearby wall pictures or other metal objects that could affect the readings of the magnetic stud finder and set them aside for the time being.

STEP 2: Make sure your stud finder is powered on.

Make sure your stud finder’s battery is fresh and working, as a weak battery can seriously skew readings. Also, make sure the plane of the rivet finder (where you’ll see the contacts and usually a gasket to protect the wall from scratches) is free of dust and debris.

STEP 3: Locate studs.

Studs are usually 16 inches apart (sometimes 24 inches in very old homes), so you’ll be looking for studs somewhere in the two-foot range. Hold your stud finder flat against the wall, about 1 foot from where you ideally want to drill.

Light it up. Usually this is done with buttons mounted on the sides where you hold the tool. Now press a button to calibrate the stud finder; when the tool stops flashing or beeps, it’s ready to go. (Consult your manual to find out exactly how your rivet finder is calibrated, as it varies.)

STEP 4: Move the stud finder.

Slowly slide the stud finder to the right, horizontally, while keeping the unit flat against the wall.

STEP 5: Mark the location of the dowels.

When the stud finder alerts you to a stud – either with a beep or a flashing light, depending on the finder in question – poll the last few inches of the device again, to double-check the location the warning is in progress. .

STEP 6: Find the dead spot.

Mark the exact location with your pencil. If you use the center stud finder, you will see where the edges of the studs are. Mark each edge so that when you go to drill or drive a nail into the dowel, you will know where the gravity dead spot is.

STEP 7: Double check your work.

Do not accept this warning as the end of your journey; instead, keep looking for studs either side 16-24 inches from the original marker in Steps 3-6.

Although your tool says it locates studs exactly where you need them, the stud finder may report a false positive when there are metallic or flashing pipes or brackets in the wall. Make sure your alarm isn’t a false positive by also positioning the studs on either side of the nail you intend to use.mount your mirror,Television, racks or other heavy objects.

Mark their location when you find them, then measure. In fact, if they are 16 or 24 inches apart, you have found your center orientation. You are now ready to hammer or drill if necessary. Proceed with care and precision, and you won’t regret it.

Of course, if you prefer the DIY route, you can find wall studs without specialized equipment. Although not infallible, these three methodsit helps if you choose to forego using the stud finder.

I show how to use the most common type of stud finder.

The stud finder is sensing the density of the surface below it and letting you know when you run into a stud or joist. Most stud finders are designed to find the edge of the stud. You mark both sides of the stud with the stud finder then measure for the center.
