Multi-read content why you shouldn t feed ducks

Feeding the ducks bread isn’t everything. Yes, ducks are cute, but feeding them bread can cause health issues and negatively impact their environment.

Kristin Norris, a veterinary technician at VCA Bridgeport Animal Hospital, says the bread is high in carbohydrates and has little nutritional value for ducks. Bread can be a particular problem for ducklings.

Like snacks for humans, bread is sometimes served to ducks; However, it is difficult to regulate how often chickens eat this stinky snack when in the wild. If the ducks live in a public space, they can be fed several times a day. High-carb diets cause birds to defecate, and duck droppings can contain bacteria that can cause illnesses like botulism in poultry, Norris says.

Leftover bread is also a problem. Norris says moldy bread can cause deadly lung infections, potentially killing entire flocks of ducks.

Norris notes: Leftover bread can also damage bird habitat. Rotten bread makes the water stinky and can lead to algae blooms that can destroy other plants and animals, further limiting the variety of food choices for ducks.

Lancaster restaurants survive and thrive during Restaurant Week

Instead of feeding ducks bread, bird lovers can feed them things like:

 • Grapes cut in half (remember to cut them in half to avoid choking)
 • cracked corn
 • Thawed frozen peas
 • Barley
 • oats
 • Bird seed
 • Duck pellets

Even with these healthy snacks, Norris says it’s still important to feed your ducks in moderation. If birds, especially ducklings, become dependent on humans for food, they may stop feeding or adopt other natural behaviors.

“You don’t have to carry a whole bag of seeds, a whole bag of grapes,” Norris explains, “You don’t want to throw a whole bunch of stuff at them.” Instead, just eat a few snacks.

Too many people feeding the birds, Norris says, can also lead to overcrowding as more ducks come for an easy meal. This means more droppings that could potentially harbor bacteria and more birds jostling for space and other resources. It can also attract duck predators who are attracted to large flocks.

Norris said: “They are best admired, but feeding them is very appealing. Norris stresses that moderation is key if people plan to feed ducks in open public spaces.

“If it’s a very busy day and you see a lot of people eating, maybe wait for a less busy day and a very small snack,” Norris recommends.

Canal & River Trust warn that the nation’s much loved tradition of feeding the ducks bread could be damaging their health and habitats

Watch our video to find out how the age old tradition of heading to a local waterways to feed the ducks leftover bread is harming the ducks, and what we all should be feeding them instead

The Canal & River Trust – which provides homes to hundreds of thousands of ducks and other waterfowl like swans and geese – are calling on people to feed the ducks responsibly by swapping bread for more natural treats like oats, corn, or defrosted frozen peas. The charity also wants people to spread the love and visit a new family of ducks but remember to exercise portion control to make sure they’re not overfed.

Canal & River Trust estimates that each year, 6 million loaves of bread equal to 20 double decker buses full are being thrown into canals and rivers in England and Wales – potentially polluting the water and damaging hundreds of thousands of ducks’ homes as well as harming their health.

Bread can be harmful to a duck’s health as it’s nothing like their natural diet and is the equivalent of junk food. The uneaten soggy bread can also cause a build-up of bad nutrients creating harmful algae which can spread disease and attract pests such as rats.

Watch our video to learn more about the impact of feeding bread to the ducks and what you should feed them instead.
