In the global interior world, the hottest trend right now has to be the Scandi style. Whether it’s country-style Gustavian furniture from Sweden, the classic Scandinavian mid-century design of the modernist movement, or the Danes’ passion for Hygge, we just can’t seem to get enough of it.

In this article, I will focus on the Scandinavian style in general and detail the different Scandinavian styles in the following articles. For now, here are my top 5 factors to consider if you’re looking to recreate this style in your home.

Scandinavian style and light

Natural daylight is a rarity for Scandinavians during the long winter months. Even in summer, the light is softer and grayer than the scorching sun we are used to in Australia.

Northern Lights is quite different and so Scandinavian homes are designed to let in as much natural light as possible and trap it there. So instead of using light-absorbing paint colors, floors and furniture, every element of the interior design is carefully chosen to ensure that natural light enters the room.

Since there are so many times of the year without much natural light, attention should also be paid to artificial light for a Scandi chart. By the way, I believe this is true of any decorating scheme and it’s often an element of interiors that often gets overlooked.

You should consider using different types of lighting.

Use a variety of dimmable LED recessed ceiling lights with wall sconces for mood lighting, floor and table lamps for ambience, and good quality task lighting for study and reading. You won’t use them all at once, but each plays an important role at some point. Remember that the layered lighting scheme isalwaysadapted to a single source.

Just think of the feel of a room with a single light fixture overhead. It’s quite sinister. Then consider using dimmers and wall and table lamps and you’ll have a much nicer space.

Color palette for the Scandinavian style

Keep in mind the need for light, so the color scheme in Scandi charts is usually white, with some white and some white to complete the look! Seriously, that’s true to some extent, but you can also use a lighter shade of gray. they can be soft duck egg green, light gray green or light neutral gray. You can also introduce color with natural wood.

If you are using gray on the walls, choose a very light color and offset it with crisp white decor with white and light wood accessories.

Remember that all grays have a base color, so be sure to choose one that matches the rest of the palette. Therefore, to be on the safe side, I recommend choosing a neutral gray for the interior unless you are sure about the color.

Dulux Gray Reflection is an appropriate soothing interior grey.

I created a Scandi palette to represent these ideas.

Scandi Style - My 5 tops tips

Don’t despair if you like color! Any accent color can be used in artwork and accessories. However, to ensure that as much natural light is reflected as possible, the primary color scheme should be a white of some description. This will apply to floors as well as walls and ceilings, while floors are usually whitewashed or very pale wood to create more light.

5 key elements of Scandi Style

To make sure you give this look a twist, the neutral tone of black is your friend here. Black framed artwork looks great against crisp white walls and really helps define the space, while the introduction of some darker neutral grays in the upholstery adds extra dimension.

An all-white palette can be difficult to use because it looks very sterile and lacks personality. You might want to read my article on mistakes to avoid when choosing white, to help you make the right decision:

Natural finish for the Scandinavian style.

When working with a very simple light color palette, you really need to incorporate as many natural finishes as possible. Scandi style is all about layers. Any neutral scheme needs definition and this can be introduced with different textures.

Scandinavians rarely install carpeting, preferring to work natural stone or wood for their floors and use a lot of rugs. Natural fibers such as hemp, sisal and wool in soft, neutral colors are an important part of this look. It’s also a great opportunity to introduce soothing grays into the palette.

Layers are also important for accessories.

Introduce wire cardigans, soft cashmere blankets and warm cotton cushions with a Scandinavian-style bed and sofa.

The Danes have made Hygge a global phenomenon. As the weather turns colder and winter approaches, the essence of Hygge and the importance of these accessories come into their own.

Simplicity

The appeal of the Scandi style is its clean look.

Scandinavians are not too decorative. Instead, they stick to the decorator motto of‘Evaluate a room, then put something away’.Clean lines and simple woodwork are key to this look.

Scandi Style - 5 steps to achieve this

Unnecessary decorative elements are not used for this style, but careful workmanship is important. Therefore, the beauty and integrity of a new work is important. Accessories should be simple, authentic and well made.

5 key elements of Scandi StyleImage: The Design Hunter

That’s not to say Scandi decor is boring because the appeal lies in how flawlessly beautiful a room is. The mid-20th century modern movement believed in form following function which was an integral part of the Scandinavian style. That’s why these classic pieces are still as important to the look as they were 70 years ago.

Reports

With a simple color palette and clean lines, Scandinavians really appreciate and understand the importance of a striking piece of furniture.

Instead of having many armchairs and sofas crammed into a room, think about having a few nice pieces. Usually, a month’s salary is spent on an iconic chair that will take center stage in a room. Take this gorgeous egg chair by Arne Jacobsen as the perfect example and the Hans Wegner Wishbone chair in the dining room above.

Scandinavian design is timelessly chic. Introduce elements of Scandi style into your home for interiors that are both practical and pretty. Watch presenters Laura Crombie and Anna Morley’s guide and check out out top tips for nailing Scandinavian design in your home below:

The Scandinavians are really clever at counter-balancing the hard surfaces in their homes (think wood flooring rather than carpet, for example) by adding layers of fabrics to their schemes.

Instead of going for lots of matching accessories, build up a collection of non-coordinating throws will add visual interest with their different textures and colours.

Scandi design schemes tend to err on the side of cool colours… but which is best for your room? Here’s a quick rule: east- and north-facing rooms will look better with warmer shades (think cream rather than white, pale pink rather than blue), while west- or south-facing rooms can take cooler colours, too, such as blue or grey.

The Scandis are the masters of accessorising if you ask us (how on earth would we survive without Ikea?), so why not follow suit to complete the look? The key is to mix and match old and new, curio and run-of-the-mill. Just keep the colour palette simple.

When the days are short and the nights long, you have to make the most of what little sunlight there is. Modern Scandinavian homes are often designed to face the sun, with large windows capturing the best of the day’s light. Replicate the look by using lots of pale colours.
