If your dryer is broken

Here’s the first thing to know about dryer repair: you can fix most dryer problems yourself. No need to find a technician, schedule a service call, or pay hundreds of dollars for dryer repair.

The dryer repair fixes we cover in this article solve about 90% of dryer problems. Most repairs take about an hour, but take the extra time to locate replacement parts. To find parts, search online for “equipment parts”. Most parts are relatively inexpensive. In addition to basic tools like socket sets and screwdrivers, you may need a continuity tester or multimeter to diagnose problems.

Point:The first step when repairing a device is to make sure it has power. Unplugged power cords and tripped circuit breakers are the leading causes of equipment “breakdowns”.

Dismantle the dryer

Most dryer repair jobs require parts of the exterior cabinet to be taken apart so you can gain access to the interior, and you might not even need a dryer repairman. If your dryer’s lint screen is located inside the front door (Figure A), disassemble the screen as follows: First remove the screws at each corner of the control panel. Flip the panel up and back to reveal the screws on the top panel. Remove the screws, then pull the top towards you and lift it off. To open the bottom panel, release the spring-loaded latches by inserting a paring knife into the slot just above them. With the bottom panel open, you can remove the front panel by unscrewing the two top and two bottom screws.

If your filter slides in the top of the dryer, remove the screws along the filter slot. Using a scraper knife, release the two spring pins located under the top panel at the front. Tilt the top panel like the hood of a car and remove the screws holding the front panel in place.

Figure A: Disassembling the dryer

Dryer disassembly varies slightly depending on where the lint filter is located, but most air dryer repairs require you to remove the top and front (not the back or sides) to remove the parts. lint filter access.

Figure A: Disassembling a dryer

CAREFUL!

Don’t be shocked! Unplug the dryer before performing any disassembly, diagnostic, or repair work on the dryer. On air dryers, also close the gas supply shut-off valve.

Dye Machine Repair: How to Fix a Dryer That Won’t Start

door switch
The door switch can wear out and prevent the dryer from working.Check the switch
Pull the cord out of the door switch. Open and close the door while testing continuity. If you don’t get continuity, replace the switch.

If your dryer seems completely dead when you turn it on, chances are the door switch is broken or the plunger is damaged or bent. Door switches wear out from normal use, but the constant slamming of doors can hasten their wear. Start by inspecting the plunger located on the door for dryer issues. If it is missing or bent, replace it. If the diver checks out, the next step in troubleshooting the dryer is to remove the cabinet top panel to gain access to the door switch. See disassembly instructions.

Check the continuity of the switch. If the switch is good, check the thermal fuse (see “Not Hot” below) mounted on the fan housing. If you have an air dryer with a door lint screen, access the thermal fuse by opening the bottom panel. If the filter slips in the top of the machine, remove the entire front panel. On electric dryers, remove the rear maintenance panel. If you are not getting continuous readings from the thermal fuse, DO NOT simply replace it. A blown thermal fuse is a warning that you have other serious problems – a faulty thermostat or a clogged vent. Repair them before changing the fuse.

Dryer Repair: Dryer Knocks, Rumbles, or Makes Noise

Replace the drum support roller
Clip on the old triangular roller holder and remove the roller. Wipe the shaft with a rag and alcohol, then install the new roller and retainer. DO NOT lubricate the shaft.

The drum support rollers are worn. Replace them all. If the noise persists, replace the tensioner roller (see below). Since disassembling the machine will take longer than the actual roller and belt replacement, we recommend that you replace them both at the same time.

Using a Continuity Tester

Our photo shows the use of a multimeter to diagnose problems. But a much cheaper continuity checker will also work for all the troubleshooting in this article. To use the continuity tester, simply attach the clamp to one contact and touch the probe to the other. If the light shines, you get continuity. Otherwise, you’ll be in trouble.

Dryer Repair: No Heat

Dryer Troubleshooting
Heat will not be released if any of these parts are damaged.Photo 1: Continuity test
On the air dryer, check the radiation sensor, igniter, and thermal fuse by disconnecting the wires and checking for continuity. Replace them if they fail the continuity test.Photo 2: Checking the heating element
Disconnect the electric dryer heating element wires and check for continuity. Replace the element if you don’t get a continuous reading.Photo 3: Replacement of the heating element
Replace the faulty heating element on the electric clothes dryer by removing the heat retention clip at the top of the heater box. Then pull out the housing and remove the element fixing screw. Swap items and reinstall.

If you have an electric or gas dryer that won’t heat up, check the continuity of the thermal fuse. If the thermal fuse checks out, upgrade to a radiation sensor if you have an air dryer. It monitors the igniter and energizes the air valve coils when the igniter reaches its highest temperature. A burn sensor will stop the whole program. Check its continuity (Photo 1) and replace it in case of failure. If the sensor is good, disconnect power to the igniter and check for continuity. Again, replace it if it fails the continuity test. If the radiation sensor and igniter pass the test, replace the gas valve coils. To replace them, remove the retaining plate, disconnect the sensors and remove them from the gas valve.

If your electric dryer’s thermal fuse has blown, check the continuity of the heater element. Replace the element if you do not get continuity (Photos 2 and 3).

Dryer Repair: Drum Doesn’t Spin, Motor Runs

Replace belt
Thread the new belt around the drum and towards the motor/tensioner assembly. Wrap your hand around the motor and pull the tensioner so you can wrap the belt around the motor pulley.

Not sure how to fix the dryer belt? You’re in luck, it’s just a broken belt. Remove the drawer front panel and lift the entire drum out of the cabinet. Now is the time to turn on the vacuum cleaner in your store and suck up the lint. Next, spin the tensioner pulley by hand to see if it is working properly and check for cracks. Replace the tensioner if it fails two tests. Reinsert the drum and wrap the new belt around it (the ribs face the drum). Some tensioners are mounted behind the engine, so they are difficult to see from the front panel. You will have to do it intuitively. Place your hands around the fan housing and lift the tensioner as you route the belt around the motor pulley. Voila, now you are a dryer repairman.

Quick Dryer Door Repair

If your dryer door won’t close, chances are the latch is bent or missing, or the latch is worn out. The repair is very cheap and easy. Buy parts at any appliance parts store. Next, grab some pliers, a few small straight slotted screwdrivers, and a roll of tape.

Grab the bent or broken pin and pull it out. Then install the new one, pushing firmly until the latch locks into the seat (Photo 1). Then secure the door finish with masking tape and remove the old paint. Push the small screwdriver into the bar and bend the metal tab inward. Use the second screwdriver to remove it (image 2). Embrace the new strike and you’ll be back in the laundry business.
