Multi-read content how tall should a handrail be

Measuring stair railings is a fairly simple task, but still requires precision to provide reliable support and optimal fall prevention. Knowing some of the basic building code requirements and understanding what to measure takes away much of the stress that often accompanies construction or renovation projects.

In this article, we will discuss measures for residential and basic ADA compliance.HandrailsIn the stairs.

Factors to measure

Installing the right railing, regardless of building type, requires understanding how to measure the length and height of the railing. In the case of railings that meet the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) guidelines, it is also necessary to measure the angle of the slope of the stairs.

Measure the length of the railing

The length of the ramp is measured on a line running along the ends of all the steps, starting at the tip of the upper landing and descending to the ground at the lower end. This is called the nose line.

ADA compliant stair handrails, required in commercial settings, must run the full length of Nosing Road. Additionally, they require a 12-inch horizontal section at the top, starting at a point just above the top nose.

In a residential setting, handrails comply with some, but not all, of the ADA guidelines. The railing should be continuous, starting at the end of the top landing and extending at least to the end of the lowest tread or “step”. For optimum safety, wherever possible, guardrails should extend the full length of the Nosing Road.

Measure the height of the railing

The top surface of the railing should be 34-38 inches above the ground or above Nosing Road.

Some installation guides suggest marking the height by measuring from the end of the steps. Since the brackets must be attached to a stud or equivalent solid structural member in the wall, it is useful to know the location of the guideline, as the studs are unlikely to line up precisely with the steps .

Note: In areas where children will be the primary users of the handrail, maximum handrail height is 28″. If there is an adult handrail, there must be a minimum distance of 9″.

Measure the slope of the stairs

The slope of the stairs should be determined to provide the correct transition angle between the horizontal and angled sections of the ADA compliant railing. If the slope is between 30 and 34 degrees, you can use a standard 32 degree turn. Alternatively, you can request a custom bend suit or the Promenaid Multi-Bend.

To calculate the slope, measure the increments of the steps and the run of the spikes. You can use the table below to find the slope – also called stair step or incline angle – in degrees. Usable angles with a standard 32 degree bend are shown in gray.

A smartphone app can also be used to measure the slope of stairs. Place the long edge of your smartphone along Nosing Road or, if there is a ledge parallel to the slope of the stairs, you can measure its angle instead.
