Signs of infection

If you seem to keep spotting ticks on yourself or your pets after spending time in your yard, it’s safe to assume you have an outside problem that needs your attention. It’s hard to know if you haveoutdoor killer tickswithout knowing the right places to look. Since ticks like shady, moist places (more on that later), you can usually find them under bushes and leaves, woodpiles, rock walls, and tall grass. If you think you have ticks on your lawn, a quick trick you can do is drag a white towel across the lawn – they’ll cling to it as you walk past them.

No matter how much you hate to hear it,Tick infestations can also occur indoors. This happens when you or your pet bring a tick indoors and it then breeds. Ticks can lay 1,500 to 2,000 eggs at a time and this usually happens along baseboards. Again, if you keep finding ticks indoors, even though you don’t spend a lot of time outdoors, that’s a warning sign that you have a really big problem indoors and that you will have to take care of. niches.

Let’s take a closer look at how to deal with the most common problem: killing ticks in your garden.

5 steps to get rid of ticks

Prevention relies primarily on minimizing encounters with infected ticks – primarily blacklegged ticks (also called deer ticks). This requires a multi-pronged approach that focuses on reducing local tick populations through both environmental changes (making your yard less likely to like ticks) and duplicate targeted insecticides. Follow this simple 5-step guide to keeping ticks out of your yard.

1. Clean up garden debris

Well-kept lawns are surprisingly important for tick prevention. Since ticks like shady, moist areas, it’s important to keep yard debris to a minimum.

Cut the lawn short and often. The tick uses tall grass as a ladder to reach and cling to a warm host as it passes. Short grass provides less shade for ticks and increased sun leads to drier lawns. Also, since mowing the lawn provides a shady, moist area that looks like a tick, it’s a good idea to use a mower with an empty bagging machine elsewhere. Not only does it pick up grass, but it can also get rid of ticks. If you don’t have a cartoner, you can simply rake the grass.

Trim shrubs and low trees.Overgrown plants, bushes and trees provide dense shade, so prune them to get enough sun to help keep the area below dry. Shrubs such asstrawberry bushesare warm cushions for ticks because they have wide, dense soles that block sunlight. In reality, some states prohibit themdue to their invasiveness and association with Lyme disease.

2. Create a barrier from shaded areas

Add a border 3 to the edge of the yard.If you live near a woodlot or treed area, adding wood chips or fine gravel to a 3 foot border will be a nuisance for ticks and will, in most cases, prevent avoid crossing. It is important to use traditional wood chips and not the stained variety as the latter is often damp.

These barriers naturally repel ticks without the need for other sprays, as ticks do not want to cross such areas.

3. Eliminate deer and rodent attractions

Stagto be considered abreeding hostfor ticks. This means that ticks can feed until they are full of milk and have enough protein to lay 1,500 to 2,000 eggs. Yes – this is a problem for your garden. The good news is that the breeding host donates blood but is free of pathogens. So that means deer ticks won’t catch Lyme disease from that deer, but they will increase the number of fleas in your neighborhood.

Opposite,Rats and small rodentsConsiderationtank servercontribute to infectious diseases. And unfortunately, it is estimated that between40% – 90% of white-footed ratsBorrelia burgdorferibacteria responsible for Lyme disease.

Those are the two issues we’re going to focus on: reducing deer attractants (essentially helping to increase tick populations) and reducing rodent attractants (which increase Lyme disease cases). .

Remove plants that deer like.Your local garden center/nursery will be a great resource specific to your area to help you determine if your trees, shrubs or trees are attractive to deer and if there are alternative plants.

Use deer and rodent repellents where they are common.Personally, deer repellents don’t work as well where I live (northeast) for whitetail deer. However, rodent repellents such asCritter Riderworks pretty well if you know where they like to live. For example, I have a stone wall that attracts a lot of chipmunks (and maybe rats at night), so I sprinkled some repellent all over the stone wall and definitely saw little chipmunks . Remember that if you see chipmunks in a certain area during the day, you can assume that there are also rats in that area at night.

4. Place marker tubes around the property

A broad-spectrum insecticide sprayed all over your yard will kill ticks, but it will also kill other beneficial insects. Apipe markingworks differently by targeting the source of most tick-borne diseases – rodents.

So,How does tube marking work? This very simple product uses cotton or lint soaked in permethrin – one of the main recommendations for killing ticks, as it is safe for children and dogs once it dries. The permethrin cotton is then stuffed into a cardboard tube and placed around your property where rats and chipmunks are common (under bushes and floors or along stone walls and floors). These rodents make their nests with treated cotton, and therefore permethrin treats their fur the same way we add flea and tick repellents to dogs.

There are simple DIY methods for making marker tubes, which are obviously a cheaper alternative to purchasing. However, when my tick problem peaked, I opted to purchase a pack on Amazon from Damminix. They also blend in a little better with your garden instead of 20 rolls of toilet paper!

Where to spray in your garden?

I always recommend spraying around the house (background, windows, door frames) as a good basic protection not only against ticks but also against other unwanted insects.

Depending on the size of your lawn, you can spray the entire area and finish it off. However, I have a 3 acre property so it’s not practical to spray this several times a year. What I do instead is spray a line about 6 feet wide to separate the treeline from the rest of my yard.

Storing steps

After spraying the perimeter, I then spray under bushes, along ornamental rocks, under low trees, and other shady or moist areas where ticks like to hide. And remember – regularly mow the lawn and cut it short, collect leaves and prune plants.
