Multi-read content how to repair brick chimney mortar

This guide provides a quick overview that describes the most common chimney repair problems and how to solve them.

CHECK YOUR CHIMNEY

To avoid water leaks and damage to your home, look for loose, missing, cracked, or damaged turn signals. Caulk any seams or gaps. Poor quality strobe lights should be replaced or repaired with a high quality elastomeric strobe sealant.

TEST YOUR SLABS AND SHORT-TERM EQUIPMENT CLOSELY

To avoid major repairs, make minor repairs as soon as there is a problem. Check for loose, cracked or chipped (chipped) bricks. If some bricks are loose or many are cracked or chipped, you could have serious water damage issues. You will need to hire a mason or a chimney sweep specialized in chimney repair. Small cracks (up to 1/8″ wide) in non-flowing tile can be filled with a broom sealer, as there may be loose or missing grout joints. Consult a professional to see if your chimney needs replacing grout joints, a repair method known as chimney cutting. Small cracks in hard mortar joints can easily be filled with the same crack filler applied with a brush.

CHECK YOUR MASK FOR WATER

After repairing or sealing cracks, pour a few ounces of water down the chimney. If the surface darkens quickly and water penetrates the masonry within seconds, your chimney is vulnerable to further water damage. Treat it with a high quality, 100% breathable water repellent designed for masonry chimneys. Breathability is important because conventional water sealants can trap water vapor inside the chimney and cause more damage. Before applying the water repellent, remove any unsightly white or brown spots. There are excellent masonry cleaners that are safer than the strong acids commonly used to clean masonry. Be sure to follow all label precautions when using any chemical.

CHECK YOUR CHIMNEY

The mortar or concrete above your chimney is called the crown. It is the roof of your chimney. If there are loose or missing parts, consult a specialist. If it is cracked but still solid, repair it by fixing the applied crown with a brush to remain permanently flexible to prevent damage and water leaks.

CHECK YOUR FIREPLACE FURNITURE

Look inside your chimney under a bright light and check for any clogs and flammable creosote or soot deposits, although it’s best to hire a certified chimney sweep. There are many problems that only trained professionals can detect. The National Fire Protection Association recommends an annual assessment of all chimneys, chimneys, and vents. Each year, unsafe chimneys cause a significant number of injuries and deaths and cause over $200 million in property damage. To find a certified chimney sweep, visit the American Chimney Safety Institute online at www.csia.org.

INSTALL THE CHIMNEY Cover

The chimney or chimney cap covers the opening of your chimney. They keep animals, debris and water out of your chimney. Stainless steel or aluminum chimney caps are the strongest and won’t rust.
