Causes and Solutions of Brown or Yellow Grass Patches.

Brown or dead spots on the lawn can have many causes, some of which are easy to control and others that may require more attention. West Norfolk Lawn Care can diagnose why you have brown spots or weak grass in your lawn and recommend a program to correct the problem.

Brown spots can range from a few small spots that have lost color gradually turning brown to larger areas turning brown with the grass eventually dying, leaving an empty patch that can be weeded or overgrown with moss.

animal urine
Tell-tale signs or symptoms
Brown circular spots with grassy outer rings are very shiny and longer in areas that your pet might use to relieve themselves.
Raison
The problem is often caused by the urine of animals, especially female dogs. If you don’t have a pet, you can bring a vixen (fox) to your garden.
Remedies
Water the areas after each visit and in the future encourage your pet to use the area that is not on the lawn. You might consider using a dog stone in a basin of water to neutralize the urine. In severe cases, dig up and replace soil and grass or seeds.

Gasoline, oil or chemical spills
Tell-tale signs or symptoms
Unusual patches of dead grass appear randomly over large areas of the lawn or run horizontally across the lawn.
Raison
This may be due to a gas leak or an oil leak from your lawn mower or other machinery.
Remedies
Do not fill your mower while it is on the lawn. Gasoline spills will kill the grass. The soil will need to be watered thoroughly and frequently and overseeded. In severe cases, dig up the ground and replace the soil and plant new seeds.

Roots
Tell-tale signs or symptoms
In dry weather, areas of brown grass appear under the trees.
Raison
The grass is losing the battle for moisture with the roots.
Remedies
Aeration to ventilate and improve soil drainage. In severe cases, water the lawn in the morning.

Chemicals and detergents
Tell-tale signs or symptoms
Areas of brown grass or dying grass are evenly spaced.
Raison
Individuals walk through driveways or patios that have been treated with road cleaners or other chemicals and then walk across lawns.
Remedies
Wear rubber boots or the like and wash them after applying chemicals before walking on the grass. A walk on your lawn after a few days of severe frost or a very severe drought can also cause brown or dry patches to appear later in the year.

Frequent appearance of brown stripes on the lawn after feeding
Tell-tale signs or symptoms
Rows of brown grass with patches of verdant green grass.
Raison
Feeding grass with the incorrect amount of nutrients or too much fertilizer or chemicals can burn the lawn and in some cases kill the grass. Fertilizers not applied correctly or equipment not used correctly.
Remedies
Be sure to carefully measure and apply everything you put on your lawn, being careful not to double the lawn area by overlapping application cycles. Prevention is easier than cure. Water and aerate the lawn during seeding as needed. It may be best to call West Norfolk Lawn Care and ask them to apply the treatment.

Bare patches appear on the high points of your lawn
Tell-tale signs or symptoms
Thin yellow grass or bare patches possibly overgrown with moss and/or weeds.
Raison
Due to the uneven nature of lawns, lawn mower blades, especially if using a rotary mower, will nick the grass, (cutting too close to the ground) on high points causing weeds and even weeds to weaken .
Remedies
Increase the height set by your lawn mower blade. Take steps to eliminate extreme undulations in your lawn to prevent burns. Apply to smooth waves.

The lawn turns brown after being mowed in the summer
Tell-tale signs or symptoms
The lawn begins to yellow and some areas turn almost white a few days after mowing.
Raison
Mowing in very dry weather will remove the moisture. If the weather is still hot and dry and, even worse, sunny, the grass will be stressed and when it loses moisture it will turn yellow or even brown. Make sure your mower blade is sharp. The dull blade crushes the grass leaving lacerations and bruises that can make it easier for diseases to enter the blade. Infrequent or infrequent mowing will also stress the lawn, especially if you let it grow long enough and then cut it short. Remember the rule of thirds.
Remedies
Proper watering and mowing time will prevent this problem. Water plenty to help the grass recover. Good mowing habits – only mow if mowing is necessary, try not to mow in cold or very dry weather. Never cut more than a third of the actual length of grass at a time.

Dry plates
Tell-tale signs or symptoms
Brown ink stains.
Raison
Dry patches caused by fungicides see Hydrostatic Dry Spot, “Dry Spot” which usually occurs in hot, dry weather and high evening temperatures. Wet conditions favor disease development and as a result the soil cannot absorb most of the available moisture and the grass dries out.
Remedies
Mild cases can be treated with aeration and more severe cases may require watering – treating with a wetting agent to combat dry spots combined with aeration to increase the water absorption/retention properties of the soil.

Cloth too thick on the lawn
Tell-tale signs or symptoms
Random areas of brown spots on the lawn, making the lawn feel spongy when walked on.
Raison
Excess fabric on the lawn will trap water on or near the surface, creating wet conditions that can cause disease. The roofing sheet is too thick to prevent moisture from being absorbed by the ground and reaching the roots of the grass.
Remedies
The water must reach the roots. Lawns should be raked or mopped to remove moss and straw. Ventilate if possible.

Soil Lagoon
Tell-tale signs or symptoms
Brown spots appear in high traffic areas or on heavy clay soil. When it rains, the water remains on the surface and does not run off.
Raison
Compacted soil prevents water from seeping into the soil and, like this layer of soil, prevents moisture from reaching the roots.
Remedies
Aeration or aeration to reduce compaction and increase water flow to soil and roots. In severe cases cover with sand to improve soil quality and improve aeration.

grass disease
Tell-tale signs or symptoms
Numerous small round brown spots. Disperses and breeds rapidly, especially during periods of hot weather. The spots will gradually increase in size.
Raison
There are a number of different lawn diseases that can cause brown spots on your lawn. Some grass diseases can be caused by feeding the grass the wrong type of fertilizer. Some diseases are favored by too much nitrogen in the soil. They are also recommended if the soil is poorly nourished and/or rotten.
Remedies
Aeration and a properly balanced feeding program used by West Norfolk Lawn Care can resolve most minor cases. Moderate to extreme cases may require the use of fungicides. Call West Norfolk Lawn Care and we can identify and treat the condition. Reducing mowing frequency in wet weather prevents the spread of most diseases and reduces stress on the lawn. Regular airing and venting to remove this tissue will help prevent recurring problems.

Insect damage
Tell-tale signs or symptoms
Brown spots often appear in areas near fences or in shady or damp conditions. Once noticed, there may be a rapid increase in the number and size of the patches.
Raison
The larvae of various insects, leafhoppers and beetles feed on your grass roots and shoots. Large areas of your lawn can be damaged beyond repair if you don’t take action against the invading insect. Especially large birds pecking your lawn for pests and larvae is a sign that you may have been infected.
Remedies
West Norfolk Lawn Care can identify and treat any insect problem you have with the appropriate insecticide. Ensuring that the treatment is effective is relatively cheap and safe.

Drought
Tell-tale signs or symptoms
The grass loses its luster and begins to dull and brown.
Raison
Lack of humidity due to low rainfall or competition from nearby trees and shrubs.
Remedies
All organisms need moisture. Water thoroughly to help the lawn recover. Water in the morning so the grass can dry out and prevent a wet state from forming. Avoid watering at night as it can create wet conditions.

Sheets
Tell-tale signs or symptoms
Yellow grass and possibly dead grass appear in the fall.
Raison
Leaving leaves on your lawn for just a few days can cause serious damage. It is recommended to dig up the leaves after 3/4 days. If the grass does not receive light for more than 6/7 days, it will begin to deteriorate.
Remedies
Sweep or blow the leaves regularly every few days in the fall.

Mousse
Tell-tale signs or symptoms
A yellow-green lawn with areas of weak and sparse grass.
Raison
Heavy clay soils tend to be damaged by moss. The moss competes with the grass for nutrients and moisture, gradually weakening and pushing the grass outward.
Remedies
Treat the moss with an effective anti-mold agent. Depending on the amount of moss in the lawn, monitor it with sweeping to remove dead moss, aeration to solve soil compaction is one of the fundamental factors that allow moss to grow in the lawn. . Continue to aerate and loosen the soil by fertilizing with 70% sand to improve soil quality and finally sowing seeds to thicken the grass.

Waterlogged or poorly drained lawn
Tell-tale signs or symptoms
A typical feature is a sticky, earthy coating on the surface.
Raison
Compaction caused by constant footfall, even animal traffic, combined with heavy rain can result in areas of lawn that drain slowly, hold water and form puddles.
Remedies
Relief can be brought by penetrating or aerating/cultivating to a depth of 4 inches then fertilizing and filling the holes with sand mulch to allow them to act as small ventilation shafts improving the flow of water and air to the roots. The work should ideally be done in the fall rather than the spring and fed with plenty of potassium to support root growth. Poorly drained crates will need well-drained soil. Aeration and top dressing will only improve surface drainage, not total drainage.

Worm droppings
Tell-tale signs or symptoms
The brown gum will spread all over your lawn or on small mounds of damp soil.
Raison
Some species of earthworms burrow and secrete dirt on the soil surface called embryos. They can be smudged or stained by lawn mowers or footsteps.
Remedies
Let the piece dry and brush with a stiff brush. Where appropriate, West Norfolk Lawn Care can spray your lawn with a product to prevent worms from excreting residue, thereby preventing worm droppings.

Gardening expert Katie Rushworth shows you how to clear and repair the bare and brown patches in your lawn. Start by raking out any dead grass and moss to allow more sunlight to reach the new grass seed. Ensure you have removed any weeds from the area of lawn you are repairing. Cover the area with a thin layer of top soil. Sow your seeds evenly and apply pressure to ensure the seed makes good contact with the soil.
