How to Remove a Doorknob - With Hidden Screws

Photo: dreamtime.com

We think a doorknob is common and unremarkable, but a closer inspection can sometimes confuse you, leaving you wondering,Where are the screws that hold it?They are there, okay, if not clearly visible, they are hidden under a cosmetic necklace called “rose”. Removing and replacing the knob requires you to reach these screws without damaging the door.

Before you start

Before you can tackle simple household chores enough to do them yourself, first understandtypes of door handleson the market:

  • Most modern standard problem door handles are sold as locks, complete with all the necessary hardware – knob, rosette, pivot, latch (or stopper), and latch plate. Some of these knobs have countersunk hex head screws, accessible with a compatible Allen key.
  • Others have a thin hole through which you thread a strong wire (straightened paperclips are great) to push into a spring-loaded pin called a cotter pin; this will release the knob from the pivot or shaft connecting the two knobs via the lock assembly.
  • On other nodes, the trigger access hole is actually a slot; Use a thin flat-head screwdriver to access this type.

Identifying your existing button type will dictate how best to remove and replace it for a more up-to-date look.

How to remove and replace the door handle

STEP 1

Know your button. Check the lock side of the door handle, looking for a small crack or hole; These are trigger access vulnerabilities. Do not you see it ? Instead, look for a recessed screw that you loosen withAllen wrenchsuitable size.

2ND STEP

Now how you release the button depends on how attached it is.

  • If you find a slot, insert a flathead screwdriver and push the pin in to release the button.
  • If you find a small hole, use a straightened paper clip or other strong wire to put it back in place.
  • If it is a recessed hex head screw, turn it counterclockwise with an Allen key until the knob is free.

STEP 3

Remove the rose. In some cases, the rosette must be removed separately to expose the screws that hold the base plate to the door. If so, locate the thin slit in the gasket between the plate and the door, insert a flat head screwdriver and pop the rosette out.

STEP 4

Then dismantle the structures. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws that go from one base plate to its opposite through the drilled hole. These screws hold the knob and latch assembly together. Remove old knobs, spacers, pins and pins.

STEP 5

Replace the latch plate, the piece of metal that is attached to the door latch that the latch will pass through when the door is fully closed (also called the guard). Although it looks good, you will need to remove and replace it with a Phillips screwdriver, to ensure compatibility with the new crown hardware.

STEP 6

Install the new latch making sure the curved side of the lever faces the same way as the original latch for the door to latch properly.

STEP 7

Place the new knob in place, starting with the exterior or latch side of the door. (The rosette may be part of the knob assembly, or it may need to be mounted separately, before the knob itself.) Repeat on the inside knob. Position the axle and mounting screw through the latch assembly from the outside and into the base of the opposite knob. Tighten all screws with a Phillips screwdriver. Slide the knob on the end of the axle and turn it until the locking pin fits into the slot or access hole. Tighten the recessed screws with an Allen key if necessary.

Struck! Who is it? Your brand new door handle looks great and works smoothly.
