Useful tips

DISCLAIMER (Read Carefully) The following installation recommendations and helpful tips for umbrellas are provided as a courtesy to mail order buyers and to facilitate the correct ordering of the product. Shade Sails does not and cannot know the specific intent of buyer stressors, area variables such as ground, wind and exposure conditions, existing structural strength, code sets local access, etc. The following is provided only as a very general summary of the implementation of methods used successfully by Shade Sails in the past. Shade Sails does not extend warranties under these general guidelines and assumes no responsibility for installation, installation design, specifications, code compliance, or any installation-related issues. Shade Sails offer these services on an individual contract basis, and buyers have opted to purchase only ready-made sails as a more economical alternative.

Make them tense!!

Nothing causes faster wear than loose sails that shift and flap in the wind. Most people don’t stretch them enough!!

PLACEMENT EXAMPLE

The holographic membrane moves less, sags less and looks better!!! They should have at least four corners and as many height variations as possible!!

By varying the elevation (2 diagonally opposite low points and 2 opposite high points
the other on the other diagonal, you get a very stable and dynamic 3D shape.

High point veil.. A single high angle with 3 low angles also creates a 3D shape..

The first step

Step 1) Plan your installation

Check with your local building department Some installations require a building permit. We are not responsible for your license or the design of your installation. The following information is intended as a guide and is not intended to replace the services of a civil or structural engineer. Choose a location: Before you begin installation, it is very important that you consider the most suitable location for your parasol(s), taking into account the following factors: Size of the sail(s) ) of the parasol(s). Strength of existing structures intended to serve as anchor points. Ability to insert corrective articles. The position of the barbecue or the direction of the sun, etc.Sails should be spaced approximately 18 inches apart when stacked to prevent splitting. Watch out for branches that can stretch the sails.

Step 2) Plan your support material

Unlike custom sails, you need to provide support hardware that fits around the corners of the sail and provides enough room for mounting hardware or additional ropes. It is best to make the legs of the printed structural unit 18″ larger than the size of the sail so that variations in sail size are not an issue and there is enough room to add ropes, chain links, turning needles, shackles, etc. Do not add more than 24 inches on more than one corner. (One corner on each sail can be extended to 30′ but only one corner) If you extend 2 or more corners with cables, ropes or chains, the membrane will move excessively in the wind and therefore the shock loads can significantly reduce the life of the sail. Multi-angle long locos will void the warranty.

To help visualize the sails, you can also use string stretched between your intended attachment points. The first step is to measure. Then create a scale drawing of the area you want to shade. 1/4 (or 1/8) inch = 1 foot. Then cut out the scale drawings of the ready-made shade sails. Rotate them for layout ideas. Imagine a straight line from the center of the shade sail through the corner ring, this is where you should place the fixing point. The fabric is knitted and most water runs off the lowest point, but it is not waterproof. Remember that sails do not have straight lines on the edges; they are constructed with a slight curve that deviates approximately 10% from the length on each side. We’ve found that the most beautiful installations feature bold height changes from corner to corner, and that overlapping sails or multiple sails provide an interesting look.

Step 3) Configure your attachment point

Fixing points must be installed first. So mount your posts with a tie, and for your house, trees, or whatever you’ve chosen to support them, add grommets, grommets, or straps. Keep in mind that there may be significant wind loads. (From 5.5 to 15 lbs. per square foot of sail). These loads are distributed between the corners, but it is important that what they attach to is appropriate. For poles, we usually use 4″ calendar 40 steel pipe (galvanized) or temporary utility poles (treated) sized 6″ or larger. (Click here for more information on the position) Posts can be powder coated or painted to protect them and bring out the desired color. Steel pipes are usually found at a steel supplier or pipe supplier. If wooden posts are used, it is common to use temporary posts with preservatives added to the wood. They are usually embedded in a concrete foundation 3 feet deep. Up to 6′ and 1′ to 1.5′ in diameter. (Typically 1/3 of the total length of steel or wood is buried, so to get a 10′ high post you should have about 5′ in the ground for the total length of 15 steel ‘ long). Dab or lean slightly behind the column and support the column until the concrete is dry. If large pylons or more than one sail are attached, one usually refers to larger pillars. Install the threaded eye nut through the poles with the radial eyes of the sail. The corners of buildings are excellent mounting points, and we designed a corner clip specifically for this application. Fascia mounting is generally a bad idea unless the fascia can be reinforced or attached to the rafters. Often a backing plate can be bolted to lintels above windows and doors or to the top plate at the top of the wall. Additionally, it is often possible to connect to distant structures with a wired cable that extends the distance.

Step 4) Fix your repair point

The sails have a stainless steel ring at each corner that needs to be attached to your attachment point. It can be completed in different ways; The best way to “do it yourself” is to tie them with a short length Dacron twine. This offers a lot of adjustment possibilities and is very powerful and inexpensive. For a more high-tech look, you can use stainless steel “D” shackles and handlebars or even a chain.

Step 5) Tension the sail

Pre-stretch approximately 100 lbs by tightening the rope or screw(s).

Sail maintenance: Sail can be locked in position or lowered and scrubbed gently
with a mild detergent.

Do not leave sails in snow-prone areas during the winter months, and unless your equipment has been designed for long-term use, they should be taken down.
in windy conditions.

To increase the distance between the angle of the shade sail and the fixing point, use one of the following options:

5 common methods for attaching sails to fixed points:
Note: Do not add more than 24 inches on multiple angles. (One corner on each sail can be extended to 30′ but only one corner) If extending 2 or more corners with cables,
rope or chain Shade sails will move excessively in the wind and shock loads can significantly reduce the life of the sail. Long ends at multiple angles will void warranty.
1. 1/4″ stainless steel chain
2. stainless cable
3. Shackle(s) “D”
4. Tensioner
5. Low tension Dacron webbing

Use of material:

lifting pinto attach to the Truss Tail.Bracesto be fixed at the corner of the building. Tied by four5/16″ lock.

long parenthesesto attach to the poles. Tied by four5/16″ lock

4 eyelet spacers for mounting on lintels above doors or windows.Attach using
four5/16″ lock

6 inch eyeboltattach to 4 inch galvanized pipe, calendar 40 (find a pipe/steel supplier in your phone book)

Rotate 5/16for stretch, use one or two for triangles, two for squares

5/16 “D” shacklesfor corners that do not have pivot axes.

Or just use low tension Dacron thread for all fixings.

Examples are shown below:

006
Use a stainless steel chain and shackle for easy rough adjustment

011
Or… Use cables and shackles for coarse tuning

005
Direct connection to “D” shackle

003
Swing your arms for more tension.
(usually 2 per triangle or quadrilateral)
On a 4-sided sail, place the tensioners diagonally across from each other.

008
Or use low tension Dacron strings for extra tension.
(usually angle 2 on each sail)
The back and forth between the eye and the ring acts like a pulley!

  •
  • Prepare the attachment points to shape the foot at least 1 foot larger than the sail.
  • (Better 2 feet is even better)
  • Use string, cord or cable for a rough fit (quite tight)
  • Use a turnbuckle or rope to add tension… (very tight!)
  • Be sure to pull evenly from all corners.
  • Don’t stress… Loose veils look ugly and don’t last long!

Install this super strong shade sail from Amazon with No Sag. This shade sail has a built in reinforcing / reinforcement cable along the edge which lets you tighten the sail so there is absolutely no sag. I used 316 marine grade stainless steel hardware and I purchased it all fromAmazon. (Links below)

Right after I installed the shade sail Tropical Storm Laura came through with 45 knot gusts and the shade sails barely moved.

If you want a heavy duty shade sail with reinforced cable and D rings, look no further.

The key to getting this to look good is finding a sail with a cable ring. I found two on Amazon, but they are less common then you would think.

The next most import part is purchasing some quality rigging material. I used Marine Grade Stainless Steel (316) to prevent corrosion, but I live by the water, so you could get away with galvanized or even nickel coated if you don’t live by the ocean.

The biggest tip is to measure everything before you order your shade and be creative in your connection points. I found this shade, which was a standard size (16 x 16 x 16 feet) and was on sale. The custom shades can get very expensive, but try to find a size that is common and in stock to save a lot of $$$.

Also, very important is to grease your turn buckles with white lithium grease before you start to put the shade up to prevent from binding.
