Multi-read content how to make a spark plug tester

Introduce

Spark plugs are found in all gasoline engines. Their job is to ignite the air/fuel mixture inside the engine at the right time. Age, use, and poor fuel quality can all contribute to dirty spark plugs and improper ignition.

A poor start or difficulty starting are two symptoms of a bad spark plug, which spins slowly, uses more fuel and less electricity than usual. Learning how to check spark plugs is a fundamental part of troubleshooting any small engine. The job only takes a few minutes and costs little or nothing.

How spark plugs work

  • The spark plug is always located on top of the cylinder head in small engines. Cylinders like this have fins on the outside and are one of the largest parts of any small gasoline engine.
  • All spark plugs screw into a hole in the cylinder head.
  • A thick wire and coil pushed through the tip of the spark plug will provide the electrical energy needed to cause the hidden end of the spark plug to spark.
  • The engine’s ignition system sends a very high current pulse through this wire and into the spark plug – typically 20,000 to 30,000 volts for small engines.
  • The tip of the plug is located just inside the engine combustion chamber in the cylinder head and has a small gap.
  • When the high voltage current encounters this gap, it jumps space on its way to complete the circuit by flowing into the engine block. This jump creates a visible spark that ignites the air/fuel mixture inside the engine so it can run.
  • All problems with spark plugs are caused by a fault that prevents or weakens the electricity from jumping the critical spark plug gap.
