Storage Ideas for Small Craft Rooms

Create an ideal workspace for all your crafts, no matter how big the space you have. I’ll share my everyday craft storage ideas and show you how I set up a small space in the kitchen as a workspace for year-round crafts.

Start with supplies

Gather the supplies and crafting tools you use the most, then figure out how to organize the materials and supplies you need. I like most of my supplies within easy reach of my seat. I use a lot of colors and paper andLawn mower… So organizing a space with these objects was essential for me. For you, your priorities may be different. You can get fancy items and buy pre-built units to store your stuff, or you can DIY a solution that works for you. For my part, I used both worlds a bit.

My craft space - small space organizing for craft suppliesMy craft space – organize a small space for crafts

First let me say that I have acraft workshop in my basement. It’s stocked with craft supplies, sewing supplies, and a mile-long booth space. Truth is, I barely use it compared to my daily upstairs workspace. I spend most of my time on the computer, next toLawn mower, so most of my crafts are done right in the middle of my kitchen. I use the kitchen table when I need office space. I have set up a small work space with a nice little storage and it is perfect for my daily DIY. Here’s how I made this little space work for me.

I have lots of pens and pencils. It’s what I use in all my crafts…I draw. A big part of my craft room inventory is organizing drawing supplies. I could keep all my drawing tools in one big bin, but I like how the colors are displayed so I can see them. I also like that all my drawing widgets are organized by type. If I want to use watercolor pencils, I don’t want to rummage through a large container of all kinds of pencils. So you’ll see that a lot of my ideas are about some sort of pen or pencil. You can also use the same concept for other documents… get creative and have fun organizing!

Set up a dedicated workspace

Regardless of how much space you have to work with, setting up an area that can still be used for your crafting can be very helpful. Find a place for everything, so you know where they are when you need them. My workspace is a relatively small desk with a computer and pretty much everything I might need for a typical craft project.

Gather similar items and organize them for easy access

I like to sort most of my supplies by type, then by color. It’s easier for me to find things when they’re organized and in one place. Because I focus on paper crafting and drawing or painting, I have all of my crayons, markers, paper, and paints in their own containers and color combinations. You don’t need to have an entire color collection for your favorite paint colors, pick the ones you use the most and make room for that paint set.

Use wall space to organize

For more office space, use the walls to store the things you need in your craft room. I took a bunch of little plastic boxes and stuck them to the wall with magnets to keep my drawing supplies off the table. When I need to draw an illustration, I can easily remove the pencil from the wall to use. I also have a few small boxes of regular supplies that hang on the same wall as the pencils. Things like rope, tinsel, and fancy paperclips, all with a house hanging on the wall above my desk.

Cubbies are a crafter’s best friend

Even a small craft room has room for hobbies. and Hobby Storage is the perfect organizational shelf. You can fill a cubbie with more shelves, baskets, and containers to really maximize your space. Some preferences can be left open so you can see what’s inside while others can be closed.

Organize the way you make

All of my Cricut supplies have a home on one side of my desk while my drawing supplies are on the other. That way, when working on a particular craft technique, I don’t have to travel far to get all the ingredients I need. I have both the Cricut Maker and the Cricut Air 2 so I can work on the Cricut projects I share with you. The two machines are therefore configured, ready to operate. All my cards are right under my desk, stored in letter trays and a big locker. I have found plastic bins that fit nicely into the compartments to help separate the paper and make it easier to pick up and put away. I keep the Cricut pen just belowLawn mowerand I keep all Cricut tools in Cricut’s built-in storage drawers.

Use built-in surfaces

My kitchen has a wall between the current kitchen and the family room. It is against this dividing wall that I placed my office. I use the top of the wall as extra “shelf” space for some of my craft room essentials. The Cricut machines are above that wall…so I don’t have to move them when I want to use them. The mat has room to move. I also use part of this wall as a bookcase for my favorite books and magazines. In the end, I found a nice storage cup at Target where I sat on the wall with all the cutting tools…scissors and a box cutter.

Use these hidden spaces to get more memory

Every little open space I have access to is set up to store something. Under my desk, next to the wall on the left, there is space between the preferences and the wall. This is where I store my laptop bags and wallets when I’m not using them. Under my desk, where I sit, I have a strip of metal that I then place the cases in with magnets. I have a magnetic cup for my everyday pens and pencils, as well as little boxes for things like pins and rubber bands. I’ve also found some cute little pen holders on Amazon that can attach to your computer screen. This is where I store my brushes and pens on my computer.

Present supplies to create their own works of art

Sometimes organizing and displaying your crafts or art can become the art of decorating your space. Arrange paints or crayons to create a rainbow in pretty cups and trays. Or set your colored paper in a nice color pattern on the paper as shown in your text space art.

Sort things out a bit

In a small craft room, you can’t leave a lot of stuff loose. So have just enough for your basic daily use. I have a crate with more pencils, markers and paints…because I need them all. I also have a bin for miscellaneous items like glue, extra cords, hot glue gun, etc. I have another vinyl tray just for my Cricut. The vinyl fits perfectly, arranged vertically in the barrel. My sketchbooks are on one shelf while paper, photo cards and extra materials for my MyPrintly projects are in another bin.

Add shopping cart if you need

For a little extra storage, get a wheelchair. I work with HP so I need a few printers in my space. So I chose this cute little wheelchair which has a nice wooden compartment and two wire shelves. I use the wooden tray for photographing projects and the shelf holds 2 of my 3 printers. I also found additional hanging rope baskets to store more materials. Use all that free space…you can get a lot of supplies in a small craft room.

You don’t have to spend tons to have an organized defense craft

I told you…your craft room can be beautifully organized without spending a lot of money. I think hobbies are the best investment because you can pack a lot of stuff and they don’t have to cost a ton. I chose the Dollar Tree paper holder to fit my storage space perfectly.

Finish it with lots of inspiration and personal touches

Every word space needs a bit of personality. Showcase your stuff, organize everything, then add little touches to show off your own personal style. I have a few things that are important to me. My daughter made me a cute little poem art and my mom gave me a letter art sign before I moved in.. both live on the wall right next to where I sit all day . I found a cute little glass vase that I added to my magnetic wall. I also have a cute little unicorn that I picked up from a conference at my friends at ShareaSale…because everyone needs a unicorn. I also have an essential oil diffuser that I use to fill the air with creative and inspiring scents throughout the day.

Origami Twist is on Instagram! – @origamitwist

I had a viewer request to make a video about how to organize and store craft supplies in a small space. I’ve come up with a step by step organizational system for doing just that! This system will work perfectly for anyone who has a small supply collection or is trying to downsize their craft supplies, particularly someone who has to store their supplies in a multi-purpose room. I’ve included the scenario that you may have to share your craft area with other people as well, just for good measure! I hope you find this video helpful! Happy Crafting!

Crafting in a small space, especially when you have to share that space with others can be quite a challenge! Storing your craft supplies in the same place can be even more challenging! In this video I walk step by step through how I would go about setting up craft supply storage in an apartment or small home. I focus on cases where you would need to share your craft supplies with a room that is intended for another purpose, such as a dining room, bedroom or living room. Please let me know below if you would like to see more organizing videos and/or videos about how to declutter/purge.
