Multi-read content how to get paint out of fabric couch

Imagine that. It’s Saturday morning and life is good. You’re thrown onto the couch listening to the kids play when the youngest walks into the room with a giant smile on his face. She brings you her latest masterpiece to share, and when you sit down to block her, you realize a second – too late that she has a brush in her other hand.

A very wet brush.

A very wet brush is coated in red paint.

A very wet brush covered in red paint is now running down the center of your bright white sofa.

Roaring!!!

For many of us, this is a worst-case scenario where we don’t know what to do or even what steps to take. But do not worry ! At Guardsman, we know how to handle this emergency. Just keep reading for some key tips to help keep your sofa looking shiny and new.

Step One: Diagnosis

The first step is to determine what type of paint you are dealing with. There are two main culprits: oil-based paint and water-based paint. How do you know who you’re up against? The best way is to check the paint container. If packaging is available, it should give you a clear idea of the type. By the way, your paint may be labeled latex or acrylic, which are just names for specific water-based paints.

If the packaging isNotavailable, things get complicated, but we can always make an educated guess. Touch the paint to see how it feels. Water-based paints tend to be a little thin while oil-based paints have a shiny, oily feel.

Once the diagnosis is made, it’s time to get to work!

Water based colors

Remove water-based paint stains

Start by using a smooth tool to remove as much paint as possible. If the paint has dried, you should use a stiff brush, such as a toothbrush, to gently remove the paint from the fabric. Do it slowly cause you don’t want to mess upupholstery fabric.

Pro Tip:Use short, round strokes, the same way you would on your teeth. This will help loosen the dried paint and loosen it from the fabric.

Once you’ve removed a lot of the paint with a paintbrush, blot the area with a damp cloth or wet rag to loosen the color. It is very important not to rub the stain as this may spread the paint instead of removing it. You can also spray a small amount of stain remover on the stain or even vinegar on the stain to help the cleaning process.

The last step in the procedure is to rinse the area. Use a clean towel and fresh water to gently dab the area several times until the last stain is gone. This process may take several rinses, but will help completely remove the stain once and for all.

Removing oil-based paint stains

Oil painting is a bit different because, as you might have guessed, oil painting. Oil and water problem? They don’t mix! So the last thing you want to do is rub that stain with a damp or wet cloth.

To start, take the same stiff-bristled paintbrush and, using small, circular strokes, carefully remove the paint from the canvas. Remove as much color as possible before moving on to the next step.

This is the difference of oil-based paints. To properly clean your sofa, you will need to purchase some of the manufacturer’s recommended solvents – try contacting them through their website. This will help dissolve the oil and remove most of the stain. Start by testing a small amount of solvent in an invisible place. This will help ensure that the solvent is not further damaged.

Using a clean cloth, carefully dab the area. You want to keep the solvent as close to the stain as possible to prevent the color from spilling out.

Then use a clean, dry cloth to blot the paint stain. Keep repeating these steps until the color is in place.

After the color fades, use a waterproof hand sanitizer on a clean towel or sponge to remove any solvent residue. At this point, the oil in the paint should be completely removed. Which means you can now rinse the area with clean water to finish things off and get your sofa looking great again.

If you have questions about stubborn stains or how to breathe new life into themfavorite furniture, then call the Guardians. We can help you keep your child’s artwork on the furniture and on the walls where it belongs!

NOTE: If you have oil paint, the alcohol will not work but the brush cleaner and restorer will dissolve it. Most likely mineral spirits will as well but it has more of an odor to it and is flammable, so you will need to wash the area thoroughly with soap and water several times to remove all traces.

1. First, test your cleaning solvent on an area that cannot be seen to make sure the fibers and dyes of your carpet will not be harmed.

2. Saturate the stain with your solvent of choice (Alcohol or Winsor \u0026 Newton Brush Cleaner)

3. Allow to soak in for about 5 minutes.

4. Using butter knife or palette knife scrape dried paint off the dried paint.

5. Rub and pat with your cleaning rag to remove loosened paint.

6. Keep repeating steps 2 – 5 until all paint is moved.

7. Mop up excess solvent with clean rag.

You may need to shampoo the carpet afterwards. I have not found this to be necessary as I have never had a residue remain.

Beware of staining colors! Some pigments absorb more readily into fibers rather than sitting on top of them. Trying to clean them MAY make a bigger stain. Some common staining colors are:

All the phthalocyanine pigments (phthalo blue, phthalo green, etc.)

Blacks (Mars Black, Ivory Black, Carbon black, etc.)

Quinacridone colors (my vintage western shirt STILL has some quinacridone crimson on it from years ago!)
