How to close the main water valve

Before leaving town, it’s a good idea to shut off the main water line to prevent any changes that will damage the water supply while you’re away. Many water meter installations have two valves, one on the sidewalk and one on the side of the house. If you live in a colder climate, you’ll usually find the main kill switch in the basement near the front of the house. In warmer climates it will be outside your home attached to an outside wall or in an underground box with a removable cover.

There are twomain types of shut-off valves: gate valve and ball valve. Gate valves are common in older homes and have a round handle that must be turned several times to open or close the valve. Gate valves are designed to be fully open or fully closed. Water flowing through a partially open gate valve can wear down the metal and cause the valve to fail over time. Ball valves are more common in newer builds and have a lever that rotates 90 degrees to turn the water on or off. You can immediately tell if it is open: In the closed position, the lever is perpendicular to the pipe; in the open position, it is parallel.

If you’ve never turned off the main water valve before, check it before you go on vacation. You will need an adjustable wrench, bucket and slip pliers. Open a faucet somewhere in the house and close the main water valve. All water flows will stop. Old gate valves can break, so be gentle when handling. If the valve is stuck, leave it alone. If it is leaking or not closing completely, have the valve replaced by a licensed plumber or replace the valve yourself if you are comfortable with a simple plumbing project. You’ll need to call your water department (and possibly pay a small fee) to request that the water reaching your home be turned off at a curbside stop while you make repairs.

If you have a well, turn off the well’s power switch when you’re away for long periods of time so the well doesn’t pump more water while you’re away.

Need to turn the water main supply to your house off quickly? Here’s a quick tip for you homeowners out there. Knowing how to turn off the water to house can save you a lot of money in damage and water wasted!

► 1. Locate your main water shut off valve.

• We see the shutoff valve outside, near the street in front of your home, in a covered water meter box buried in the ground most often.

• You may find the valve in the basement or crawl space below your house, on a wall near the front.

• If your home is on a slab, the valve may be near your water heater or in the garage.

• If you don’t find the supply valve in any of those spots, look for a water pipe entering your house and attempt to follow it.

► 2. If you found the water shut off valve inside your house, turn it off.

• Just turn the valve to the right (clockwise) as far as it goes, with a wrench.

► 3. If you located the water meter box near the street, you can shut off the water supply from there instead.

• The valve closest to your house is the one you want.

• To turn off the water supply from here, you’ll need a meter key and/or meter wrench. You can purchase them at your local hardware store or on Amazon: (Meter Key —

• You could also use a crescent wrench and a screwdriver instead of a meter key for this task.

• Turn the meter valve all the way to the right (clockwise) with the wrench or meter key. You might see an arrow on your valve pointing towards your home, turn the valve so that the arrow is pointing away from your home. Your home’s water supply should now be off.

► 4. Release pressure from your pipes.

• Turn on a hot and a cold tap until they run dry.

► 5. Store the tools (crescent wrench and screwdriver or water meter key) in a safe, convenient place.

► 6. Tell other family members where to find them and how to handle the water shutoff.

Congrats! You’ve learned how to turn off your home’s water supply if necessary in an emergency. You’re prepared to save your home and property from damage and contain your water bill in case of a water leak on your property–and save yourself a lot of stress.

This simple trick can save you THOUSANDS of dollars in a plumbing emergency. Turning off the water to your house is super easy to do, anyone in your home can do it, and everyone should know how to. This video covers a quick and effective way to turn off the water to your house at your water meter. The process is very easy:

– First make sure that you have the proper tools to get into your meter box and shut your valve off.

– Then locate your water meter, sometimes it’s in the front yard by the street, sometimes it’s in the driveway. You need to know where yours is, because it might be in a unique location.

– Using your meter key, unlatch and pull off the lid.

– Once you’re in, put your wrench on the valve and turn it until the arrow etched onto the valve is facing away from your house.

That’s it! Now the water has been shut off at the main, preventing more water from flooding into your house. This is a handy skill to have and everyone in your house should know how to do it.
