Multi-read content how to clean cotton hats

After a few years of heavy use, my dirty baseball caps have been known to just end up in the trash rather than being washed. I’ve tried the folk high-end dishwashing method, but it never yielded great results for me. Caps are warped, appear discolored, and have only been partially cleaned.

But I did some research and discovered a better and gentler way to clean the old cap that will freshen it up, brighten it up and extend its life. And above all, it was largely successful.

Luckily for you readers, I had some very rough hats to do some testing. Let’s dive into it.

General Hat Washing Tips

  • Don’t put hats on clothes
  • – washing machine or dryer. A high-performance washer without a central agitator column may be fine, but even then it should be cold water on the gentlest cycle and you also have to worry about other clothes under load distorting their shape from the hat. The dryer is too hot and messy, which is bad for you. It is best to avoid washing machines altogether.
  • Do not use products containing bleach
  • ; You want the color of your shiny cap to stay nice and bright for many years to come.
  • Dispelling the dishwasher myth.
  • You’ve probably heard that you can throw the lid in the dishwasher on the top shelf. Do not do that. Dishwasher cleaners often contain bleach, and the appliance often operates at high temperatures (both washing and drying), which can also damage the caps.
  • Hand washing really is the best method
  • to maintain both the color and the shape of the hat.

The best way to wash baseball caps

1. Fill a clean sink or bucket with warm water.Err in the aspect of cool and warm.

2. When full, add a dollop of detergent or OxiClean.Dish soap can be effective, but a detergent or specialized stain-blocking treatment, such as OxiClean, is stronger and more active in removing stains from hat fibers.

Wash the beak of the cap.

3. Clean the hat first, if necessary. If there are any particularly problematic areas, clean the stains by dabbing the cleaner directly onto the hat. After dipping the hat into the first bucket or sink, use a toothbrush or other small brush to rub the cleaner into the fabric. I found a trick for using shampoo on sweat stains; I tried it on one of my hats and the results were quite spectacular. The bill is free of sweat stains, while the back (where I don’t shampoo) is still quite rough after wiping:

Dirty hat.

A note here: Be especially careful around the seam line. If you are too strong, the seams may be misaligned and the artwork damaged.

Hat in sink.

4. Let the hat soak for up to a few hours. After spot cleaning, let the hat soak in a bucket or sink full of soapy water that you filled for a few hours, although I’ve found it only takes 20-30 minutes to do the job. After half a soak, look in the lid and see how dirty it is. Although the damp cloth will cover some stains, they will still show if they are bad. Using your small scrub brush, clean any stubborn problem areas again and again be careful with stitched patterns and logos.

5. Rinse off all soap with warm water.Rinse the hat thoroughly before letting it dry.

6. Pat with a towel to remove excess moisture. The hat will obviously be very wet when you take it out of the water; Allow some excess to drip off, then towel dry as much as possible while keeping the shape of the hat and being gentle with the logos. Your goal here is simply to remove the excess so it can dry on the counter without water running over it.

No towels underneath = wet counters.

7. Always air dry on certain types of containers. You want to find a way to dry the hat so it’s not just crumpled up on the counter. Find a coffee maker, container, ball towel, or maybe any mannequin head you need to put it on. This will ensure that the shape of the hat is always correct and not wrinkled. Throw the towel under the container; no matter how hard you tap it, I notice there will always be drips. If you want to speed things up, use a small fan to blow air or a low heat hair dryer.

Tips for cleaning the bonnet

Wool hats are a little more fragile than your standard cotton or mesh hat. For example, the discontinued AoM hat (if you have one, keep it, it’s now a classic collectible!), is made of wool and just needs a little extra attention to clean. Instead of standard detergents or cleaners, look for something madespecial for wool, and soak it as above.

Be sure to be especially gentle when scrubbing; If you’re too hard, the wool can become soft and feel like felt. You don’t want that.

And finally, when drying the hat, pat it dry to remove excess moisture, then consider wearing the hat to dry the rest. It will probably be a little uncomfortable, but the shape will fit your head more precisely than a container of coffee beans. Woolen hats are notorious for losing their shape after washing, so be especially careful.

Tips for cleaning old hats

If your hat is 20 years old, it is most likely made of other materials that are less durable than today’s hats, both in terms of visor and cap. Believe it or not, the invoice was made fromcardboardrather than today’s more forgiving plastics.

The first thing to do when cleaning an old baseball cap is to give it a color test. Most hats today are very colorfast, which means they have a blend that helps them retain their color when washed. However, old hats don’t always have this. To test, rub some detergent on the underside of the note with a rag. If the cloth is stained, you just need to use water to clean the cover and try as hard as you can. If the clean cloth comes off, you obviously need to use detergent.

As for the actual washing, only spot clean, especially if you’re unsure of the bill’s material. Soaking an old cardboard ticket in water will obviously damage it. And old hats are generally less durable than today’s hats. Use a small brush and hand clean any problem areas.

Verdict

Right and left wash caps; unwashed “control” beanie in the middle.

my hat is outa lot ofcleanser after using this hand washing method. I did some tests with different methods, including not washing the black and white center cap. Stains were still visible on the bill and the white was not as white as the freshly cleaned “Playoffs” baseball cap on its left side. OxiClean actually lightens the color on this page. You’ll also notice on this playoff cap that the bill stains are almost completely gone. They are still faintly visible, but better than before.

The gray cover on the right is also much better, although as you saw above the back is still a bit rough since I haven’t cleaned it. Lesson: Spot cleaning is a must for particularly problematic areas.

If your favorite baseball cap gets dirty from excessive sweating in the summer, wash your hands thoroughly and you should be able to wear it longer.
