STEP 1: Examine the scratches carefully.

The depth of a scratch determines how it is removed. Generally, if you run your fingernail through the scratch and the nail is not snagged, it is shallow enough to be treated successfully with a mild abrasive, such astoothpasteor baking soda. If the naildoHowever, this is a deeper scratch that requires repeated treatment with ultra-fine wet sandpaper.

STEP 2: Clean it.

Before polishing, clean the plastic surface thoroughly so that any loose debris does not scratch the plastic further. Use lukewarm water and a few dropsdishwasher soap, or a small amount of rubbing alcohol applied to a clean rag or cotton ball.

Skip to the next step if your scratch is fairly light, or skip to step 4 if you’re trying to remove a little scratch.

STEP 3: Polish first with a mild abrasive, such as toothpaste or baking soda.

The silica in toothpaste can be just abrasive enough to create small scratches. Squeeze just enough to cover the scratch and follow in small circles withcottonround or clean cotton cloth, dry and buff until the surface begins to flatten. Rinse off the residue with water and check your work; It may take a few applications and some elbow grease up to 10 minutes before you get the desired results.

Don’t want to waste toothpaste? Mix equal parts water and baking soda to form a thick paste and apply it to the scratch with a cotton ball or cloth in gentle circular motions. Rinse periodically to check your progress, repeating until you have completely removed the scratch.

STEP 4: Wet the sand for a deeper scratch.

Wet sanders slowly level the plastic surface with a little more force than toothpaste or baking soda, ideal for deeper scratches. Moisture prevents material from building up in the sandpaper, preventing further scratches from damagingPlastic.

Dip a piece of 800 grit wet/dry sandpaper in water for several minutes until saturated. Use a light circular motion to sand the area, being careful not to apply too much pressure or you could create new scratches. Rinse between rounds and re-wet the sandpaper as needed during the process.

STEP 5: Proceed to sharpening.

If the scratches persist, clean the area again and switch to 1000 grit sandpaper (the higher the number, the finer the grit), repeat the circular buffing motion and clean after each scrub. Continue to use gradually smootherSandpaper, up to about 2,000 grit, until the scratch is completely gone. Once the scratch has been smoothed, wipe the surface with a damp cloth.

STEP 6: Polish to revive shine.

Once the scratch has been repaired and the surfaceto clean, you may notice that the plastic has lost its luster in the work area. To restore shine, apply a small amount of plastic or metal polishing compound, just enough to cover the tarnish, and dab in circular motions with a clean, dry cloth. You may have to repeat this process several times, but in the end the plastic will shine like new again.
