Mowing Wet Grass Water

Photo: istockphoto.com

Q. I saw a neighbor mow the lawn in the morning right after the sprinklers turned off, but I don’t think it will work when the blades are still wet. Is it really okay to mow wet grass?

A:Although there are acceptable conditions for operating a lawn mower after a rainstorm, in general you are correct. The time is incorrect, and here’s why.

Water and electricity do not mix.

Using an electric lawnmower on wet grass – especially with an extension cord – is riskyShock wave. When connections (and any wiring under worn or damaged wiring components) are exposed to moisture, it damages the machine and causes an electric shock to the operator.

Does Mowing Wet Grass Do More Harm Than Good? The Answers!

Photo: istockphoto.com

Wet weeding presents a personal hazard.

Simply walking on a slippery lawn with enough forward force to push the mower can cause you (the operator) to slip and fall too close to be comfortable with the mower blade.

Wet blades of grass can damage the lawn mower.

Without the proper fuel stabilizer, the fuel remaining in your lawn mower’s fuel tank can become contaminated with excess moisture and even corrode your machine. Lawn mowers can also interfere with the work of a lawn mower by sticking to the unit in clumps that clog the vacuum or the blade itself. Either way, these blockages force the machine to work harder until it stops if you don’t clean it thoroughly when you do.

A wet lawn is notoriously difficult to mow.

Wet blades of grass are slippery and difficult to cut, creating aunevenly chopped(better) rather than the clean cut you can get on a sunny afternoon. Unless your lawn mower blades are in perfect condition, freshly sharpened or replaced, it may even take two or three pads on the same wet lawn to get even a small part of the cut if the lawn is dry.

Mowing Wet Grass a Wet Lawn is Difficult to Mow

Photo: istockphoto.com

Mowing wet lawns is an easy way to spread disease.

Because the fungus thrives in moist environments, it is not surprising that conditions likebrown spot diseasecan grow on lawns that have been mowed immediately after a downpour. When patches of dry, wet grass are left on the lawn without sufficient airflow to dry it, the grass becomes more susceptible to fungal diseases. Wet patches of grass that stick to the underside of the lawn mower deck can also develop mildew, which can spread to your lawn the next time you mow.

Wet mowing can damage the base of your lawn.

In addition to the ability to spread fungal diseases, lawn mowingWet grass can also damage the ground. Lawnmowers are heavy-duty machines and are not designed for use on soft, muddy ground. Wheels (and even your shoes) can compact saturated soil or even form grooves, damaging roots and hindering the future growth of healthy grass. Always test the ground before you start your lawn mower, and if it looks muddy or soft, it’s probably best to wait to mow.

Mowing Wet Grass The Work Won’t Stop With the Cut

Photo: istockphoto.com

The work will not stop with the cuts.

Wet grass will require additional cleaning, considering how good the grass grips when you add water to the equation. And wet grass clippings that stick to the underside of the lawn mower can create a breeding ground for mold – and possibly a broken lawn mower – if the machine is left too wet for long periods of time. Be sure to scrape the deck of stuck blades, brush the tires, and clean the lawn mower body. Then turn your attention to the remaining stains. The chlorophyll in freshly cut grass will cause more stains than you’ll get on an average mowing day, so be preparedlawn stain removerof your clothes, shoes and aisle instantly.

If you absolutely mustcut the grasswet lawn, be sure to take all safety precautions. First check the soil saturation. When you stand on your lawn, don’t sink into it and see the water come up around the edge of your shoe – cutting off too much water is a bad idea. If standing water is not available, you can tame your garden to some extent by using a steady gas-powered mower with sharp blades. If you can, set your mower to side discharge; While this will leave rows of mowed grass on your lawn for later manual bag closing, it will save you the mess when dealing with mower bags with wet interiors.

Finally, change your mower deck to one of the highest settings to cut blades up to 3 or 4 inches long and no shorter. Lawn mowers are difficult to shave cleanly when working with wet lawns, so reduce the slack if you want the machine to do its job well. Following these simple rules can protect you even when trying to catch up on lawn care in less than ideal conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions About Wet Weeding

Why not mow the lawn when it’s wet?

MowingWet grass is not good for turf health, equipment operation, or operator safety. Not only is it more likely to damage your expensive machinery, but there’s also more room for you to slip and risk injury. Wet plowing can also lead to fungal diseases and cracks in your lawn.

How long should I wait to mow the lawn after a rain?

During morning frosts or after a light shower, you may only need to wait 2 to 5 hours for the grass to dry before mowing. With a heavier downpour, you should wait at least a day to mow the lawn safely.

Can we mow the lawn after the rain?

While wet mowing can damage your mower or lawn, there are tips to minimize problems if you don’t have time to wait. Using a sharp blade helps keep your lawn healthier while the soil is still moist. You can also lift the floor of your lawn mower 3 inches or more and rinse one side of the wet mower. But if the ground under the lawn feels mushy when you walk on it, stop there and let it dry out for a while before trying to mow the lawn.

Does Mowing Wet Grass Do More Harm Than Good? The Answers!

Photo: istockphoto.com

Does wet mowing dull the blade?

Although wet grass cannot damage a mower blade, its smooth surface certainly does not facilitate the cutting process. And if left on the blade, saturated cuts can cause rusting and premature failure of metal cutting parts such as the blade.

Epilogue

Although you probably want to mow the lawn as soon as the rain stops, it’s best to wait until the grass is dry. Wet mowing can lead to fungal plant diseases, soil damage and even injury to mower operators – all preventable with a little patience.

Doc and the crew cut the Bermuda lawn while it’s wet but also while it’s still raining.  Cutting wet grass and wet lawns presents certain challenges. The big issue is clippings that can pile up and cause rotting and fungus. Heavy lawn equipment can leave massive ruts in the lawn if the grass is cut while soaking wet.  You should wait at least 24 hours after heavy rainfalls to cut with riders.
