There are a number of reasons you might consider removing the bathtub drain. For example, the fitting may have a strainer that prevents you from accessing the plumber’s solid drain to remove some stubborn clogs.

Or maybe you are considering upgrading your drain plug with a better one. It is also possible that your current drain design is chrome and an update requires a brass drain.

removing bathtub drain

Either way, replacing a tub drain pipe requires removing the drain flange. The flange is the visible part of the drain.

You will find most of the parts that make up the tub drain assembly under the tub. Luckily, you won’t have much trouble replacing a drain flange.24 hour plumber in Sydney.

If you need to replace the entire tub drain, you need to work under the tub area. In some tub designs, you can only drain the water by lifting the tub.

In most cases, removing a flange is relatively easy. It’s something you can easily do from the bathtub.

The tools you will need to remove the bathtub drain

The flange is usually screwed into the tail of the drain. The tail is sometimes called the tub show. The tailgate is the pipe under the tub and is connected to the main drain line in the bathroom wall.

The outer part of the flange is usually threaded. The wires are threaded into the tail of the exhaust pipe. When removing the flange, simply remove it from the exhaust manifold.

You may be lucky to remove the flange with the tools you already have at home. However, it may not be so easy.

For example, if the drain has multiple crossbars, you can use a screwdriver firmly between the crossbars and twist the screwdriver to remove the flange.

However, the main challenge with this method is that the screwdriver may not come into close contact with the crossbars.

If so, you won’t be able to apply enough torque to rotate it. Some plumbers can successfully use a regular hammer to remove drains, but this is only possible with certain types of hammers and drains.

Unclogging drains is much easier with the help of tools specifically designed for unclogging drains. For example, one of these tools is a dumbbell. A dumbbell looks like a wrench and fits snugly between the crossbars of the sling.

All you have to do is screw it in using a screwdriver or a wrench as a lever. If your drain design does not have a crossbar, you will need to use a heavy-duty drain squeegee or drain wrench.

The drain key or drain puller comes with a reverse thread system or an extension wing that secures the flange from the inside.

Once the tool grips the flange, you can use a wrench to rotate it. You can find one of these drain unclogging tools at your local plumbing or hardware store.

Start by removing the drain plug from the tub

The first thing to do before removing the flange is to remove the drain plug from the tub. The type of drain plug mechanism you have will determine the procedure for removing it.

If your tub has a lever on the back, simply lift it up to remove the plug. In this case, simply grab the lever and pull up, then pull back to release the lever arm.

More effort may be required to remove other models of plugs. Here’s how to remove the covers based on their design:

Push-pull discharge button

To remove the button, grasp the top of the button with your hand while it is in the open or closed position. Then turn the knob anti-clockwise.

In case it gets stuck, wrap it around a dry rag or piece of cloth. Then screw it in using a pair of pliers. After removing the knob, use a sturdy screwdriver to screw in the crossbar post.

Toes touch the drain button

For this cap, you will first need to open it by grabbing the top with one hand and grabbing the shaft with a key or another hand.

Then twist your head counter-clockwise to completely separate it from the crossbar. The tip can be easily removed to reveal the screw. You can use a screwdriver to loosen the screw.

Front drain button

The floating plug is the easiest drain plug to remove. If your cap is an integrated type, simply grasp the cap button (if available) or the button itself and pull it up. By doing so, the button will appear.

Lift and turn the drain plug

With this type of drain plug, you will need to rotate it until you see a set screw on its knob. Take a screwdriver or hex key and use it to loosen the stopper adjustment screw.

Once the screw is removed, you can remove the button. Next, lift the drain plug from the post. Then remove the drain post. If you cannot find the adjustment screw, use a wrench or your finger to remove the screw assembly.

Remove the bath drain flange

You will need the following tools for the job:

  • Sponges
  • Screwdriver or wrench
  • Knife
  • Short tube (optional)
  • maid
  • Zip-It Drain Tool Type
  • Toothbrush
  • Smart dumbbell or drain key

Step 1: Begin by cleaning the drain opening

To do this, clean the hair and soap scum that may accumulate on the drain. Remove the dirt around the tub drain.

Then take a sponge and use it to clean the inside of the flange. After cleaning, you should be able to clearly see the tub drain hole and flange.

You should be able to remove any hair that may be trapped in the drain pipe when you remove the flange to access the interior.

Step 2: Lock the tool to unclog the drain

Next, take the drain key and insert it into the drain hole of the wash tub. Then take the key and tighten it on the key. You will find a nut on the wrench and this is where you tighten the wrench.

Once done, use the key to turn the drain key counterclockwise. Continue turning the key counterclockwise until its wing touches the inner drain.

At this point, you’re having trouble keeping it running. If you’re using a dumbbell, you’ll need to run it down the drain.

Then fix its pieces with a colander or crossbar. Once done, take the screwdriver and insert it over the dumbbell to act as a simple lever for easier manipulation.

Step 3: Turn the drain flange counterclockwise

Rotate the removal tool counterclockwise to remove the drain flange. This can be a challenge, especially since hard putty and calcium deposits create resistance.

Lubricating the threads will be nearly impossible. So the best chance you have is to use more force.

If necessary, thread a steel pipe over the wrench or screw handle to extend its length. The pipe will provide additional leverage to remove the drain flange.

Useful tips:

If you cannot rotate the flange, use a hair dryer to heat the flange for a few minutes. This will soften any sealant that may have hardened in the threads, making it easier to rotate the flange.

Step 4: Clean the wash tub drain hole

Use a flathead screwdriver or paring knife to remove old putty from the drain hole. Then use your household cleaner to wipe away the rust or dirt.

Clean the tail wires with a toothbrush. If the drain is clogged, you can remove the hair with a zip-it drain cleaner. Finally, install the new flange.
