Multi-read content how to make a mantel shelf for a fireplace

*These documents and instructions are for fireplaces measuring 8″ x 8″ x 68″. You will need to adjust to your own fireplace measurements.

A 1″ x 8″ piece of wood, 12 feet long

A 1″ x 8″ piece of wood, 8 feet long

Two pieces of wood veneer

Special walnut color

Polyurethane

2-3 wood blocks (I used a 2″x4″ board cut into pieces to fit inside the fire pit) *These will be used to hang the fire pit

Purchase of equipment (click on the image)

Wooden craft tools:

Nail gun with a 1.5 inch finish nail (if you don’t have a nail gun, you can use a finish nail

Miter saw

Wood glue

150 grit sandpaper

Cloth or sponge for applying dyes

pin finder

3″ mounting screws

drill or screwdriver

Level

*Note: When choosing wood, be sure to stand each board upright and check for warps and imperfections. Choose carefully!

Purchase Tools (Click the picture)

Wood Mantel User Manual:

Using my miter saw, I cut an 8″ 1 x 8 piece of lumber up to 68 and a 12″ x 8 piece into 2 panels, each measuring 68 . Save on extras! If you don’t have a saw, you can always have your boards cut to size at Lowe’s or Home Depot when you purchase them. I ended up with 3 boards all 68 inches long.

I leveled two boards on their sides and placed one on top as shown below. Since I was building the interior, I’ve used a few other boards to balance out the 1×8 size. Cold February in Utah!

UtilizeWood glueand mynailer, I secured the board together.

I used the rest of the 8 foot 1″ x 8″ board that I cut to 68″ to cut smaller pieces to fill the ends of the chimney. This cut is 5.5 inches wide. Be sure to check your own measurements. They may differ from mine.)

You may find it flawed, but I don’t mind because that’s the placeWood varnishCome play. Remember when I said it was easy…here’s why! The wood veneer covers the ends and covers up any imperfections! I like and easy solution!

I placed the papervarnishon the side and trace the shape of the oven face to the back of the veneer. I cut it out and glued it to one side of the fireplace. Pretty simple when it comes to a peel and stick board!

At this point I sanded all the edges of the wood veneer and blended them in with the wood.

After wiping off the coating, I applySpecial walnut stainsto the fireplace one by one. Be careful not to let it run! Once dry, apply 1 or 2 coatspolycrylicTo avoid scratches!

Wooden coat hanging

To hang the wooden fireplace, I attached 2 2×4 pieces that were cut to fit inside the fireplace. First, find and mark the wall studs with a pencil and a stud finder.

Once the blocks were securely fastened to the uprights, I leveled them to check out my useful work! Perfect! It’s time to hang up the fireplace. I marked on the wall exactly where to place each end of the chimney so that it is centered above the chimney. I also mark where the blocks will be above my chimney so I know where to nail them. I hung the fireplace from blocks on the wall and nailed it in place with my nail gun!.

Sorry I didn’t capture this step, but I had to use both hands (and feet haha) to hold and nail it at the same time. You can imagine can’t you! ? Anyway… This is the final product!
