Multi-read content how to start up sprinkler system in spring

Spring is the most anticipated season of the year for most gardening enthusiasts. It is a time when lawns and gardens come alive with many colors, when trees, flowers and grasses bloom. For this growth to start moving, there must be enough sun and water. Preparing your sprinkler system for the winter thaw can ensure your plants get the water they need while protecting your hoses and sprinklers from damage.

Lawns and gardens that are not sufficiently watered by Mother Nature require human intervention. Homeowners can use a hose or watering can to provide the necessary amount of water for the plant to thrive in the spring. AutomatiqueThe underground sprinkler system is also a practical toolto keep the garden healthy.

Homeowners should learn the basics of seasonal sprinkler system maintenance. While it is important to clean the sprinkler system in the winter, it is equally important to properly start the sprinkler system in the spring. The following process can take as little as 2 hours (or more), depending on the size of your property, the condition of your system and the number of sprinklers you have.

How to detoxify your sprinkler system

prepare your pipes

If you are new to spring sprinkler system maintenance, here are the steps to de-icing your sprinkler system:

1. Check your lawn for frost.

Before de-icing your sprinklers, check that your lawn is not frozen. Take a shovel and in a hidden part of your lawn, dig at least a foot into the ground. If you hit frozen ground, it means it’s still too early and you should wait about 2 weeks before doing another test dig.

Starting your sprinkler system in the spring while the ground is still frozen can damage your water lines. If you must water your plants, use a hose instead until the ground thaws.

2. Turn on your control panel.

De-icing starts at the heart of your irrigation system, specifically the main irrigation control panel. Usually the panel is installed outside and you may need to clean the dirt before you can access it.

With the control panel on, check the current settings and set the time, date and irrigation area. Replace the batteries if they have at least 6 months left. Not all control panels are the same, so you may need to find a copy of the original system documentation online. To do this, find the model number of your panel.
check tje nozzles

3. Check and clean your nozzles.

In all stages, clean the sprinkler headtakes the most time, as you will need to check and clean individual sprinkler heads and valves. And the bigger your lawn or garden, the longer it will take you to get there.

Here are the steps to follow at each sprinkler head:

Inspect the sprinkler head assembly for damage. Check that the nozzle is not damaged. If so, remove the top nozzle and have it replaced at your local lawn shop. If the main unit assembly is damaged, consider having the repair work carried out by airrigation specialist. This is a larger project best left to the professionals.

Clean the nozzle. You can use an old toothbrush to thoroughly clean each faucet. Be sure to remove any obstructions that may affect the spray pattern of the nozzle. Bad patterns can lead to uneven watering, where some areas may get too much water while others get too little.

Close the sprinkler valve. Make sure the sprinkler valve is closed unless it is the valve furthest from the main water supply. You need to leave the most open valve and pull the sprinkler out to let the air out when you turn on the water. If your system has multiple branches fed from a single main line, open the valve and remove the nozzle from the last sprinkler on each branch line.
turn on main valve

4. Open the main valve.

Slowly open the main water valve. When done quickly, you can send a stream of air and water through the system. You will want to avoid this to prevent “water hammer”. This excessive pressure can cause pipes to crack, valves to burst, or sprinklers to fly through the air.

Open the main valve until you hear water flowing. Wait a while when the water hits the main road. Then open the valve a few degrees wider every minute until it is fully open.

Some systems may have branch lines that draw water from the main line. These systems may have another valve where each branch line meets the main line. Once the main line is completely filled, still slowly and steadily, repeat the process at the main valve of each secondary line.

After opening all the valves, verify that the remote sprinkler valves were previously opened. Removing the sprinklers can help remove dirt and debris trapped in the line. Once the water is clear, close the valve and return the nozzle to its original position.

make sure all plants

5. Check your irrigation zones.

Your sprinklers are now ready for spring watering. If you haven’t made any major changes to your system or landscape in the past few months, you no longer need to adjust your sprinklers. Try testing each zone’s watering (one at a time) to make sure they’re spraying the right way.

If sprinklers need to be adjusted, document any changes you need to make to the affected area before turning off the sprinklers. Make adjustments only when the sprinklers are off so you don’t have to cycle back and forth.

Each nozzle has a marking indicating their spray pattern. Adjust the nozzle by removing the ring that holds it in place and lifting it off the head assembly. Then reassemble the nozzle with the lines pointing in the correct direction. Screw the ring back on when you’re done.

If in doubt, call a professional
contact irrigation systems

Spring disinfection of sprinkler systems can be a daunting task for some homeowners. If you’re not sure where to start, it’s best to contact an irrigation professional for professional spring maintenance and revitalization services. Get back to watering your lawn by making an appointment with them.

During the inspection, your technician can help you with the following sprinkler system adjustments:

  • Make sure the check valve is installed and closed properly
  • Make sure the valves are closed
  • Find that the main water source for your irrigation system is turned off
  • Make sure water is not leaking anywhere in your system
  • Fully open reverse flow device
  • Make sure the sprinkler head is working properly
  • Set the system controller to automatic mode
  • Turn on the main irrigation power slowly and steadily
  • Make sure the drain or discharge point is watertight
