How to remove permanent marker from wood

As a mother of two (very hyperactive) young boys, I have to be prepared for all the messes. Pencils on the wall, mysterious stains on the carpet and all kinds of dirty laundry. Recently my boys gave me the “opportunity” to learn how to remove permanent markers from wood.

During my research, I discovered that there are three commonly recommended approaches to removing permanent marks from wood. I wanted to test all three to determine the BEST method for removing permanent marks from wood.

Experience

I wasn’t sure which permanent ink removal method would work best, so I decided to test each solution. I drew three “X”s in indelible ink on the underside of my wooden kitchen table. That way, if all methods fail, I won’t leave any ink stains anywhere visible!

I tested each of the following popular methods on separate “X’s”:

  1. Toothpaste
  2. Spray hair spray
  3. Alcohol massage

Remove permanent marker from wood using this ingredient.

I looked forward to brushing with great hope. That’s because I saw it successfully remove permanent stains from wooden floors in a video above.ICT Tac. I grab a tube of Colgate toothpaste, dab some on a washcloth, and get to work.

After rubbing (and scrubbing) with toothpaste, the stain eventually comes off…but this method takes the most effort of the three. If you’re trying to get rid of permanent markers and toothpaste is all you have on hand, it will work in the end…but it does require a lot of scrubbing.

Baking soda-based toothpaste (thinkArms) will probably work better for this type of work. If you don’t have baking soda toothpaste, you can add some to your regular toothpaste and get to work.

I’ve also seen sources recommend scrubbing with baking soda and water.

Whichever combination you choose, be gentle and rub along the grain of your wood. You don’t want to ruin your furniture’s finish in the process!

Spray hair spray

There were several sources that recommended using hairspray as a method of removing ink stains, so I gave it a try!

To apply, I sprayed hairspray on the concentrated area of the wipe and rubbed it into the stain.

This method is more effective than the toothpaste option, and I haven’t noticed much (if any) damage to the wood finish.

I believe this method works because the main ingredient in most hairspray hairsprays is alcohol, which brings me to the ultimate permanent ink removal method…

Alcohol

Rubbing alcohol is one of the most commonly recommended solutions for removing permanent marks from wood. Reading this, I feel skeptical.

Wine is an excellent choice forink removerof (most) fabrics, so I can see why it also works to remove permanent marks from wood. At the same time, rubbing alcohol is very effective at removing varnishes and stains from wood… which is the cause of skepticism.

My goal is to permanently remove the marker without removing the surface finish from my desk.

I poured alcohol on the corner of the wipe and rubbed it on the “X” on the table. I have to say it works very well. It was almost like a magic trick – the ink was instantly removed from the surface of my wooden desk. After a few seconds of rubbing, the stain is undetectable.

How to remove permanent marker from wood

Because I don’t need to scrub too much or long, the finish of my wooden table is not damaged at all.

Rubbing alcohol is by far the most effective method of removing ink from permanent markers on wood.

If you don’t have alcohol on hand, nail polish remover and hand sanitizer gel are two alternatives worth trying (also alcohol).

One day I came home from work to find some artwork that my 2 year old son decided to put on our wood dining room table, with PERMANENT MARKER! My wife didn’t know how to get the scribbles off, so she left it for me to tackle.

After a little research I found many different tricks that people used; some very invasive and some magically surprising. I decided to go with the the magically surprising technique 🙂

This technique consists of just using the eraser from a regular pencil. You have to see it to believe it!
