How to remove pencil marks

We found some great deals at thrift stores while on vacation last week, like all the shoes you see above. But many of our finds came from a store that used grease pencils (or Chinese markers) to mark their prices. I hate that! Worse still, they put the price on the side of most of their shoes, which means the brand new Keen sneakers I found have the big $12.99 on the side. Argh!

However, $12.99 for a pair of Keens was too good to pass up (they’re about $90), so I bought them and a few other things, and decided it was time for us to go. Brands.

This pair of Merrells has prices listed at the bottom, so we’ll start with them.

Back home, we started experimenting. We first tried rubbing alcohol. It works, but requires a LOT of elbow grease. So my husband decided to try WD-40. He sprayed some on a rag, rubbed it into the stains and it worked wonders.

Say goodbye to grease pencils. Hello my new shoes.

Keen Sneakers

Now I can wear my new Keens without feeling like Minnie Pearl.

Remove crayons from clothes

I was curious if this trick would remove crayon marks from clothes, so I experimented to find out.

How to Remove Grease Pencil

I drew a big red “X” on this ribbed cotton hoodie.

Then I folded a paper towel and placed it inside the shirt behind the stain, so the grease pencil stain transferred to it, not the back of the shirt.

I sprayed the “X” grease pencil liberally with WD-40. Then I let it sit for a few minutes to give it a chance to work on the stain.

Treating Grease Pencil Stain on Clothing

I started by dabbing the stain with a paper towel, but that didn’t clean the pencil stain, so I resorted to rubbing. It worked, but it also smeared the dye around the shirt. At this point, it looks like this test is going to be a huge fail, but I’m moving on. I sprayed WD-40 on the stain again and continued to scrub the stain.

X Gone

Before long, almost all traces of the “X” were gone, and only a pale pink spot remained on the area I treated.

I let the shirt air dry because I wanted to see if the WD-40 would leave a stain. It made. There was a slight oil stain on the area I treated.

Shirt with Grease Pencil Stained Removed

Dishwashing liquid is great for removing oil stains, so I sprayed the stain a little and rubbed in vigorously. This removed the oil stain and the rest of the grease pencil marks.

Thus, WD-40 will remove grease pencil marks from clothing. It took some work, but I think that was to be expected.

A tip if you decide to try it:Use a folded rag after the stain, instead of a paper towel. The fabric becomes absorbent too quickly and some of the color has transferred to the back of the shirt. That leaves me with one more stain to remove.

Extra help for stubborn stains

If you’ve ever been to a thrift store that marked its prices with permanent marker,I have a solution for that too.
