We have built two types of shelves for our metal lockers, inside and outside. Both are sturdy and require no drilling into metal.
The elapsed time does not matter.
No matter how hidden they may be.
My daughterswill beI miss them, and herwill befind them.
It was only a matter of time before all the artifacts lying in the basement were rediscovered and reused.
No matter how many times I witnessed it, I was still amazed.
Concrete example. These things:
Do you know what they are?
If you answer, “A thorn in the side?” so congratulations to you ma’am! I’ll send you a chicken dinner, post production.
What you see above are eight (eight!) IKEA magnetic knife holders. If your first thought is, “why does he need Knife Man EIGHT?!?” then you are in good company. I’ve wondered the same thing for years.
We bought eight (eight!) of these magnetic knife holders in 2013, before we owned a home and I honestly can’t really remember or tell you.Whywe bought eight (eight!). I vaguely remember using one (one!) to hold my real knives.
I can’t tell you what we did with the remaining seven (seven!)
What Imay betell you all eight (eight!) of this nonsense ended up in a box on a forgotten shelf in the bowels of my old studio. I just thinkIlearn of their existence after several years. I mean, how can other people even remember that? They are very well hidden and therefore…Cannot use; Out of order ; It does not work.
Like so many things in the basement, I wanted and dreamed of getting rid of it. Who will know, right?
But then I remembered that I was married tosteel trap- a superhero with a memory that doesn’t leak. Every word of every conversation, every price paid for every purchase (along with relevant geographic data), and (most confusingly) every hiding placepiece of trashfuture artisanal offer in the basement. All of this information is stored in a more organized and efficient brain than Google’s database, a brain ready to be armed at a moment’s notice, paralyzing its adversaries with a series of structured data, logical logic and sound inference.
So instead of throwing away these knife men, I package them up and ship them to Georgia, where they reside in aNew(but no less forgotten) in the corner of the basement with box after box of other (seemingly) forgotten crapolas.
Of course it wouldn’t be a surprise when we leftmake-up workshop(usually) andmilitary cabinet makeup(namely), my aunts announced that I would be using four of IKEA’s eight magnetic knife holders (EIGHT!) in this project.
But like I said, even though it shouldn’t come as asurprise, it never endssurprising.
And I have to say I’m not only impressed that sheremindedDamn things, but she used them so skillfully!
We have two problems withmakeup cabinet: we need storage shelvesinsideeach lockerandspan bridgeBetweentoilet. If the wardrobe is made of wood, everything will become simple. But they are metal and that makes things a bit more difficult.
If possible, I’d like to avoid drilling into the metal. Not only is it unforgivable to make mistakes, but drilling or screwing metal seems to be the same thinglong term. There is no room for changing your mind. And to know my children as I know them, there will certainly besome type of time changesome only in the future!
Luckily, she found a great solution by using a magnetic knife holder to hold the shelves in the center of the closet.

Outdoor Metal Storage Shelf
Now you might think these knife holders wouldn’t be strong enough for shelves, I want to point out a few things.
Each of these IKEA knife handles is made of 10 neodymium magnets. There is no permanent magnet on Earth more powerful than neodymium. It’s the “rare earth element” you still hear as “China”, as in “China mines most of the rare earth elements and has the whole world in short bends” when it comes to distribute them.
Anyway, like I said, neodymium magnets are stupidly powerful. Several times I’ve had my finger sandwiched between one of these knife rests and its pad and I can tell you it’s not only painful as hell but it’s not easy to pull out a stuck finger! It’s like an inanimate version of a turtle bite.
Knowing that these magnets would keep sharp knives in the air, IKEA engineers over-engineered these magnets to provide exceptional holding strength. Can you imagine lawsuits if sharp kitchen knives start slipping and…? Well, I’m sure you can imagine the horrors and consequences of litigation.
I know in my heart that these things will work. I just need to prove it to be sure.
To give the shelves something a little more substantial to sit on and improve the aesthetic of the polished stainless steel, I cut and stained some scrap plywood to match the interior concave back panels. Usually the faces facing up in the image below will be against the wall. In our application, they point outwards.
I used construction glue to glue the wood to the liner inside the knife case.
With Handan’s help, I positioned the magnets at equal heights on the sides of the cabinet, then placed an uncolored test rig on top. I hit him with my fist and he held on tight. Then we piled things on it – more than expected for it to fit. The bracket is held together with no sign of slippage.
I declared the operation a success and went down to the basement to cut a shelf on the other side and color the two.
It is a simple and 100% removable solution without damaging the locker.
Metal storage shelf inside
Internal storage shelves are a bigger problem, and we’ve put together some ideas on how best to achieve our goals. Nothing is particularly easy.
Then, as with the outer shelves, inspiration struck – not me, of course, but Handan. She suggested I build two slim ladders – one for each side of each closet – then place shelves above the steps. It makes sense, looks pretty simple, and requires no drilling or screwing into metal lockers.
I had two strips of feather dust which turned out to be almost enough to prototype a closet. I filled the rest with scrap plywood.
After measuring the height and depth of the space inside the closet, I built two of these ladders, securing the “stairs” with wood glue, finish nails and wood screws 2 inches. It will be more than enough to support the shelves and everything we want to put there.
Here’s what they look like inside the closet.
I cut my last scrap plywood to make two shelves for this prototype.
My friends and I concluded that the prototype was a success! But I ran out of fur strips and plywood, so I ended up having to tear it down and buy materials for it.make-up workshop. So far I’ve been able to avoid buying anything other than floor paint and cabinet paint, so the nominal cost of a few furring strips and a sheet of plywood isn’t too bad.
Here is a short video of how I make the ladder shelves.
Once I built all the ladders and cut the shelves, Handan and I assembled the shelves in the closet.
I nailed the two shelves above to the ladder frame. This serves to strengthen the entire rack unit. But we didn’t set the floor price or the price between the ones I nailed. We wanted these shelves to be removable so we had the ability to store items higher up in the locker.
These shelves have transformed our old military lockers into use andfarMore useful storage space than the original.
We removed the first shelf from this closet to store my large cutting boards.
For now, the outer shelves are only for holding lightweight baskets, but in the future we can put anything on them – these magnets will hold!
Do your kids have organization issues? do their lockers look like a mine field? Wet boots stacked over books and homework, what used to be a sandwich stinking everything up from some undetermined location. Maybe you tried other cheap shelves that broke in a few days. We know kids tend to test everything to its limit. That’s why the Eco-Shelf has a 5 year warranty against anything your kid can do to it once properly installed. Its incredibly strong and thin to maximize storage space while being environmentally responsible. If your school would like to suggest the Eco-Shelf as an optional item in the back to school list we could set up a special coupon code so the parents would save 10% off the Eco-shelf and any other purchase from the website.
In a new occasional series I show you how NOT to do something and today it will be carpentry 🔨📐📏 😁 My colleague in the machine shop at work said I should stick to engineering when he saw the shelf 🤣😂
Okay then, so here we have a very nice piece of Treen for you. A shelf for my locker at work where things are getting a little cramped so I designed this shelf to go into one corner.
By putting the shelf in one corner it doesn’t impede on my jacket hanging in there. I mounted the shelf with two M6 bolts (With washers) utilising two existing holes on the back of the locker. These holes are smaller than the M6 bolts so I was able to ‘thread’ them into the holes to support the new shelf.
I can imagine in around 200 years time someone will pick up this locker, possibly at a car boot sale, and find my shelf inside. This person may well take it to the local auction house and have it valued, the shelf has my name on it and the date I made it. It could also be he (Or she) has also Googled my name and watched this video too! 👍
