Multi-read content what is the best electric lawn mower for the money?
As mowing season approaches, it’s time for our recommendations for the best electric lawn mowers in 2022. Whether your top priority is big grassy lawns, small, big value, or something in between, our experts have weighed in on the best battery lawn mowers.
Good news – there are plenty of quality battery lawn mowers to choose from this year!
Don’t see what you’re looking for? Ask in the comments section below and we’ll let you know what our picks are!
Overall the best battery lawn mower
Choose the Pro: Milwaukee M18 Fuel 21-inch Walk-Behind Lawn Mower
With 10 ft-lbs of torque (more than a 200cc gas engine!), the Milwaukee M18 Fuel Self-Propelled Lawn Mower is the most powerful battery-powered lawn mower we’ve tested to date. Using a pair of 12.0 Ah batteries it can run for up to an hour in bright conditions and we’ve had it run for over 40 minutes in a 4-6 inch grow. If there’s a downside, it’s the player’s thumbstick that causes thumb fatigue, but we were able to adjust our grip to work around that.
The lawnmower also features a rugged construction designed for professional use while providing the convenience of single-point height adjustment and upright storage.
Price: $999.00 with two 12.0 Ah batteries and two-port fast charger
Choose a residential area:EGO 56V Select Cut XP 21-inch Self-Propelled Lawn Mower
theEGO Select Cut Trimmerbecame our instant favorite with its stacked blade system and consistent level of performance paired with excellent cut quality. EGO evolved it with the release of Select Cut XP, taking everything we love and bumping the torque up to 8.3 lb-ft. It could still use some help with the side/rear discharge, but if you bag or mulch like most people, it’s hard to find a better mower to maintain your lawn.
Price: naked $549.00, $799.00 with 10.0 Ah battery and fast charger
As self-propelled models, our Milwaukee and EGO recommendations also top the charts in this category. Here are two more important options for you.
Pro Pick: Makita ConnectX 21-inch Self-Propelled Lawn Mower
Range is one of the biggest challenges of any battery-powered lawnmower. Makita put this directly into their crosses and developedConnectX system.. Unlike other models, the 1200Wh power supply attaches directly to the trimmer head, providing 3x more power than most cordless trimmers and running up to 3 hours continuously.
Similar to the 18V X2 (36V) XML08, the lawn mower reaches 2800 RPM with a quiet 2300 RPM mode and features a 21 inch true steel deck.
Price: ceiling $949.00, feed $1,399.00 ($2,348.00 for both)
Choose a residential area:Ryobi 40V HP CrossCut 21-inch Walk Behind Lawn Mower
Ryobi crushed it with the development of the 40V HP Brushless CrossCut Self-Propelled Lawn Mower, making huge strides over its previous generation of mowers. Pairing well with EGO’s Select Cut XP, it’s a stacked blade design that delivers excellent power and cut quality. Where it has a distinct advantage over its competitors is in the discharge aspect. This lawnmower distributes the cuts much better than other battery-powered lawnmowers we tested. Plus, Ryobi builds this lawnmower in the USA using global materials, and the kit is $200 cheaper than the Select Cut XP.
Price: $599.00 with two 6.0 Ah batteries and a fast charger
Milwaukee and Makita both received our recommendation as the best electric lawn mowers on the market. Greenworks Commercial is another brand worth considering thanks to improvements to the 25-inch model due to launch this year.
Greenworks 82V 25 inch Commercial Self Propelled Lawn Mower
The big problem for Greenworks Commercial is to improve its resistance. The 25-inch lawnmower now has the same performance as a 160cc petrol engine. Aside from that and a change in color scheme, it’s still very similar to the previous version with overlapping side-by-side propellers to cover more area without sacrificing battery efficiency.
The entire Greenworks Commercial range will be overhauled this year with lighter toolsandhigher performance, making it one of the emerging systems that needs attention as more parts of the country switch to batteries.
Ryobi 40V HP CrossCut 21-inch Brushless Push Lawn Mower
If you don’t want a self-contained transmission or are looking to save a little money, you can get a quality push lawn mower with similar performance and features to our top models mentioned. Of these options, the Ryobi CrossCut is our pick as the best electric lawn mower. It simply ditched the powertrain and kept the same performance, reduced quality, and other features, along with the Made in USA rating.
Price: $549.00 with 7.5 Ah battery and fast charger
The joy of a small lawn is that it doesn’t take long to mow and you can use a smaller lawn mower that takes up less space. 17 or 18 inch decks are ideal for this type of lawn. The good news is that you don’t have to sacrifice all the features of a larger lawn mower to get it.
Our top pick is the Skil PWRCore 20 18-inch lawn mower. It has the benefits of a brushless motor, can be folded for upright storage and its 20V battery is compatible with Skil’s entire line of PWRCore 20 lawn and power tools.
Price: $299 with two 4.0 Ah batteries and a dual-port charger.
Greenworks Pro 60V 25 Inch Self-Propelled Lawn Mower
In our tests, the Greenworks Commercial 25-inch Lawn Mower was chosen by us as the best battery-powered lawn mower for large lawns. Currently, no one else comes close to its 25-inch cutting width on a walking tour. With the pair of 4.0 Ah batteries in the kit, we were able to cut for over an hour, easily covering 1/2 an acre. At $599.00 when you buy directly from Greenworks, it’s great value too!
Once you’ve reached nearly three-quarters of an acre, you might want to consider an electric lawn mower.
Residential area:EGO 52 Inch Civil ZT Cutter (ZT4204L)
theEGO Z6 Zero-Turn Riding Mowershakes up what you might expect from a battery powered lawn mower in 2021. This year they go even further with a 52 inch build deck and the equivalent of a 25 HP gas engine. It retains the comfort and refined controls of the original model, making the “Tesla of ZT” even better.
Price: $6,999 with six 12.0 Ah batteries and onboard charger (expected May/June launch)
Commercial: Mean Green 74-inch EVO Zero-Turn Mower
Mean Green pushes the boundaries further with the 74-inch deck on its flagship EVO ZTR. It offers an impressive width of cut and up to 8 hours of battery life that lasts all day. Combined with a top speed of 13 MPH and the equivalent of 37 HP, this is the electric lawn mower to go for when you have plenty to mow.
There are tons of accessories to choose from, including a sun visor! Mean Green certainly allows you to customize the mower to meet your specific business needs.
However, all of these electrical innovations come at a steep price. You are looking for a minimum of $28,500 to join and close in $35,000 if you want the most uptime. That is to sayprior toyou add accessories.
If you’re shopping on a budget under $400, you don’t have access to the top-tier lawn mower, but you’re still within reach of quality options. You can find budget self-propelled models in this price range, but we recommend upgrading the overall quality with the EGO LM2101 push lawn mower.
It has a 5.0 Ah battery that can run for up to 45 minutes and covers a well of 1/4 acre ground. You get single-point height adjustment, a 3-in-1 discharge option, and vertical storage with better construction than most lawn mowers in the same price range. When it comes to buying the best value electric lawn mower, this is it.
The best battery lawn mowers: more selection from brands we trust
The best DeWalt battery-powered lawnmowers
DeWalt has made major improvements from the first generation 2 x 20V self-propelled lawn mowers to the second generation. DCMWSP244 has much better battery life, low noise (even for wireless) and rugged construction. Still, there are some quirks in this question, and it’s not for everyone.
Price: $499.00 with two 10.0 Ah batteries and charger
If you like the design of the Greenworks 60V 25-Inch Lawn Mower, but don’t have a lot of lawn to maintain or want smaller storage space, check out the 21-Inch version. The effect is the same as foundation and uses a single blade.
Price: $599.99 with two 4.0 Ah batteries and two-port fast charger
ECHO is phasing out the 58V battery product line in favor of the all new eForce 56V series (sorry old batteries are not compatible with new tools) and includes a new lawn mower (DLM-2100). We haven’t had a chance to test it yet, but it’s a 21-inch standalone model and it looks like it will be available in 2 x 2.5Ah and 2 x 5 battery configurations, 0 Ah.
HART has taken a big step forward in the lawn and garden arena this year with a number of new lawn mowers to choose from. Our favorite is the self-propelled 21-inch 40V brushless HLPM061US for a number of reasons. It is more powerful and runs longer thanks to the kit’s pair of 6.0Ah batteries. It features a 3-in-1 liner/bagging/side discharge design, vertical storage, and sturdier construction than previous HART models. Best of all, this one is made in the USA using global materials.
Price: $498.00 with two 6.0 Ah batteries and fast charger
Husqvarna launches a 20-inch battery-powered 3-in-1 commercial self-propelled lawn mower with aluminum deck and front bar for battery/engine cover protection. Notably, the W520i is compatible with a battery backpack. It doesn’t fit as well as Makita’s ConnectX, as you’ll still need to insert the adapter into the battery slots, but it helps take the weight off your back and prevents you from getting tied down. It also has a higher cutting range than usual, up to 4.5 inches.
Kobalt still quietly makes excellent electric lawn mowers and the 80V series is where its performance peaks. The newest is a 21-inch rear-wheel-drive system with an upgrade to the handlebar system that makes it easier to fold the car forward for vertical storage. In addition to its excellent power cuts, the Kobalt is also battery efficient, running for 60 minutes on a 6.0 Ah battery. Plus, its 4 1/8-inch maximum mowing height is ideal for tall grass species and renovating abandoned areas.
Price: $699.00 with charger and 6.0 Ah battery, $749.00 with two batteries and 4.0 Ah charger
If Makita’s ConnectX Lawn Mower is a bit pricey for your budget, try XML08. It has very similar commercial grade construction and features when operated on an 18V X2 (36V) system compatible with Makita’s largest line of OPEs and power tools. With room on board for four batteries, you can still cover a decent area. Best of all, at the time of writing, this set of four batteries is cheaper than the tool alone!
Price: $699 with four 5.0 Ah batteries and two-port fast charger
Skil offers a lot of value with its 20-inch self-propelled lawn mower. Running on the more powerful PWRCore 40 series, this brushless lawn mower offers excellent performance and cutting quality compared to others in its price range. If you’re shopping in the under $500 segment, Skil has the best inexpensive self-propelled lawn mower available.
Price: $449.99 with 5.0 Ah battery and fast charger
Stihl has been a bit more cautious about entering the electric lawn mower market and has enhanced the lineup with a few stand-alone models. Of the two available, the Stihl RMA 510 V is your best performer. It has a 21-inch steel deck (20-inch blade) with stiffer construction than the 460 series and a 3.9-inch cutting height suitable for taller grass species. One downside is that this machine runs on a fast battery compared to other self-propelled lawn mowers.
Price: Bare $459.99, $699.99 with charger and 300.AP battery
The first generation of ToroFlex Force 60 V. Lawn Mowervery excellent, but not quite able to compete with the best of the best. The next generation of the 21-inch 60V Max Super Recycler Self-Propelled Lawn Mower arrives in a sleek black color scheme and promises some serious upgrades. Two models coming in March 2022 (one with and one without headlights) focus on high airflow, big power, Flex Handle suspension and durable construction. However, all these improvements come with a higher price tag.
Price: Bare $649.99, $749.99 with charger and 7.5 Ah battery
Best Electric Lawn Mower | What we are looking for
Brushless motors make power testing much more difficult due to their ability to sense and adapt to the load experienced by the blade. To gauge this, we cut some of the overgrown grass to a manageable height and track it based on how long we can cut even a standard height section of grass.
The better the battery-powered lawn mower is at reclaiming overgrown ground and the lower the base height can be cut, the better it will perform.
The run time of an electric lawn mower is only part of the equation. The best news is how much space you can shrink on a single charge. We started with a standard-height section of grass, then saw how long we could mow on a single battery charge when we reduced it to 3 inches.
Once we know that, we calculate the maximum area you can cut without having to stop and reload.
We look at three fundamental areas of cut quality: smoothness, bagging efficiency, and coating efficiency.
Evenness is simple – we assess the evenness of the cut by looking for protruding blades and areas that may have been cut shorter than intended.
The effectiveness of bagging depends on how much grass is left versus what is collected in the bag.
Laminating efficiency takes into account the size of the cuts the knife cuts and whether it creates clumps or streaks.
With noise, we took our trusty SPL meter and measured the decibels in an open space. We used a slow response, A-weighted measurement taken from a 5-foot, 8-inch operator’s ear.
We consider build quality based on the material and how the cutters fit together. We look for components that will last well beyond the warranty period, rugged construction, and protection for electrical components and batteries.
Hills, slopes and rough terrain
Of course, this is Florida and we don’t have many legal hills. But we have steep lake shores and ditches as well as lots of rough terrain. We drove or pushed our lawn mowers to see how well they maintained wheel traction on climbs, descents, side-by-sides and crashes.
Along with all the great features, here’s a list of the standard items we’re looking for:
Drive type and function
Height range and number of levels
For our team of experts, value is more than just price. It’s about what you get for what you pay. An expensive model could very well be the best battery breaker value if it performs far enough from the budget marks to justify it.
Buying guide for the best electric lawn mower
When deciding on the best battery lawn mower for you in 2021, there’s a lot to consider. These lawnmowers are far from starting on battery power.
What is your budget?
Although you can buy a battery-powered lawn mower for less than $300, plan to spend at least $500 for a quality model and more than $700 for good electric lawn mowers.
This can create a bit of conflict. When you look at what you can get for the same price on a lawn mower, you get more power and features with this gasoline engine. However, it will have no advantages in terms of noise, emissions and maintenance.
Is battery-powered riding possible?
There are several lawn mowers available for professional and home use. The pro team has options likeGreenworks Lithium Z Zero Rotary(they also have a battery-powered UTV).
Homeowners have more choices with popular brands Ryobi, Cub Cadet and EGO (among others) offering several types of non-rotating tractors and a wider range of traditional lawn mowers.
The models we tested worked well and did the job they were designed to do. However, there are two main trade-offs you need to keep in mind. First of all, there is a big disparity in cost compared to the gas model. Second, for now, you should expect long charging times.
A third consideration is simply that this type of electric lawn mower is still relatively new. It is possible to maintain a functional gas model for 10 years or more and to fuel it if necessary. With a complete power plant, we just don’t know how long to expect with proper maintenance.
As battery technology continues to advance, keep an eye out for the firstgrapheneWheresiliconeLithium batteries. They can recharge much faster than standard lithium-ion or lead-acid batteries and potentially get you back in the saddle faster.
Residential or commercial quality?
At first glance, there isn’t a big difference between the commercial and residential quality of a battery-powered lawn mower.
In the premium segment, horsepower doesn’t seem to have changed much (although Milwaukee just changed that expectation). In fact, one of the most powerful tools we’ve tested…EGO Select Cut XP— Technically a residential model.
What commercial battery lawn mowers offer them is a design and feature set that is much more in line with what professionals demand. Part of that is just the difference between what homeowners and professionals prefer on a lawn mower. But there are variations in the quality of ingredients that brands choose for their particular lines. Commercial lawn mowers should be ready for more hours of service per week.
Brands like Greenworks Commercial, Husqvarna and Stihl rely more on their dealer networks than big box stores. You get extra support during and after the sale that you won’t find at other retailers.
The electric lawn mower is a completely different ball game. That said, you’ll see a much bigger difference in design and performance, as well as a huge gap in cost.
Self-Propelled and Propulsion
Considering self-propelled training shouldn’t have a huge impact on your run time, this is a feature you should get if it’s within your budget. Find a variable speed controller and try it out in the store before taking it home. You can usually tell after a few minutes if your hands feel comfortable and natural.
Look for mowers with removable discs that are easy to drive when you want to remove the mower. Some systems struggle to let go and force you to pull the rudders instead of letting them roll.
However, the classic look of the push lawn mower is not completely excluded. When it comes to budgeting, you can easily save $100 or more with no performance hit if you’re willing to take on more workload.
If that’s where you’re headed, look for poly flooring that reduces weight and low-rolling resistance, low-rolling casters to make your job a little easier.
Automatic drive adjustment
Our test team generally prefers the variable speed dial which is separate from the presence bar. Taking a different approach, Toro’s personal rhythm andRyobi’s Smart JourneyThe system offers self-regulating speeds that some people prefer.
When trying out different fits, look for one that is stiffer or has a positive stop. This will reduce the risk of accidentally dropping it at a different speed if your hand touches it or the ground is bumpy.
Pay attention to the position of the dial. The front and center are convenient for making adjustments on the fly. However, some people hit this spot with their hands or hips while spinning. If this is you, you might like to connect to the side so you don’t accidentally change your speed on every turn.
Steel and Poly Flooring
In the gasoline-powered world, there really is no poly flooring, mostly steel or aluminum. The world of cordless lawn mowers is very different from lawn mowers in every direction.
Steel is more durable, but you are very unlikely to experience wear through the poly layer over the life of your battery powered lawn mower. Poly also has a design advantage. Easily make subtle changes to the shape to optimize airflow for better lifting, coating and bagging than steel decking.
As we said, steel is more durable. If you have a lot of small stones that you kick up when mowing, or if the kids aren’t paying as much attention as you’d like, a steel deck can extend the life of your lawn mower. Besides, it looks good.
Pockets, liners or side discharge?
You probably already know that you like to cover or wrap. Here in Central Florida, we typically mulch to return nutrients to the lawn and avoid stopping every 10 minutes (literally) to empty the bags.
However, sometimes you go on vacation or the weather prevents you from getting to your normal mowing day. This is when the side (or rear) exhaust comes in handy.
Instead of keeping grass in the deck for finer coverage, it removes grass. Of course, you can pack it, but it will take you a long time to empty it. To control your mowing, a side discharge can help keep you moving when the grass gets longer.
Look for a lawnmower that gives you all three options and keep the drain hose handy in case you need it.
Bridge and blade size
Most of the best electric lawn mowers come in 20 or 21 inch deck sizes with slightly smaller blades (some brands list the actual blade diameter rather than the deck diameter).
There are smaller models that are suitable for smaller lawns or areas with a lot of landscaping to work around.
There are also larger models. Greenworks Commercial and Greenworks 60V are both available in 25 inch models. Battery lawn mowers have a maximum size of 52 inches or more for residential use and 74 inches for commercial use.
Larger decks are more useful on lawns larger than 1/4 acre, where they save more time. For lawns 1/4 acre or less, a standard 20 or 21 inch deck is usually fine.
Single-point or multi-point floor height adjustment
There is no doubt that single-point height adjustment is more convenient than individual wheel adjustment. The relatively lighter weight of the cordless lawn mower also makes it a more viable solution.
However, don’t completely neglect two- or four-point adjustments. Four-point systems are often structurally more rigid than single-point systems. Alternatively, you can kick the front wheel a notch higher than the rear wheel to improve bagging efficiency.
It really comes down to your preferences. We’ve found that most people set their size once and let it go, so a four-point system might not be so bad from a convenience standpoint.
Multiple battery ports
If you have a lawn larger than 1/3 of an acre, chances are you could benefit from multiple pin ports. There are three possibilities: second storage port, second active port with manual switching, and second active port with automatic switching.
Automatic switching is the most convenient and is usually available on more expensive lawn mowers. Simple manual conversion and storage takes a little more work, but not as much as going back to the garage or trailer to buy another battery.
Most electric lawn mowers have all the height ranges you need to accommodate a wide variety of grasses. If you want to cut higher than 3 1/2 inches or lower than 2 inches, just check that the mower you’re looking at covers it.
Why buy an electric lawn mower?
The best electric lawn mower for you should mow your lawn on a single charge. Regardless of the model, they all share certain characteristics. No exhaust and air motor for maintenance. You still have to clean it when you’re done, but maintenance is much easier and takes less time.
They are also quieter. The bird catches worms quickly, and if you want to start mowing at 7 a.m. on Saturday, your neighbors can sleep through the night. Another night owl? Many battery lawn mowers have headlights and you can’t disturb your neighborsthe Lord of the Ringsmarathon at 10 p.m.
These are some of the more obvious reasons, but one of our favorites is the ability to pop in the battery and mute. No cranks, no clogging and no fuel shut-off valves. As long as you have enough batteries to mow an entire lawn, it’s an easier system to use than gas.
