sleeping with space heater on southern new jersey eastern pennsylvania

SAFETY FIRST WHEN USING A PROPANE SPACE DESATALATOR

While this winter here is relatively mild insouthern New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania, it can still get quite cold at night.

If the cold in your bedroom is keeping you from getting a good night’s sleep, you might be tempted to warm up the room by running a propane heater while you sleep.

CAN’T DO IT.

Sleeping with a propane heater on is very dangerous and potentially deadly to you and your family.

According toNational Fire Safety Association, space heaters are a leading cause of heating-related home fires. Specialization like? Forty-three percent of home heating fires in the United States are caused by space heaters. And 85% of home heating-related deaths occur in firescaused by radiators.

Space heaters can be dangerous in many ways. The first is where we use them. When heaters are placed too close to flammable items such as furniture, mattresses, bedding, clothing, curtains and rugs – all of which can be found in bedrooms – they can cause fires. In fact, this is how more than half of the fires caused by space heaters are started.

If you are using a ventless ventpropaneSpace heaters, using it while you sleep puts you at risk of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. Because carbon monoxide is odorless, you can absorb dangerous and even deadly amounts of it while you sleep before the CO detector near your bedroom kicks in. When carbon monoxide builds up in your blood , it replaces the oxygen in your red blood cells. This takes away the oxygen necessary for the functioning of organs like the heart, lungs and brain. This could result in injury or death.

As if those dangers weren’t enough to deter someone from using a heater while they sleep and not turning on the thermostat, we have another danger: it’s inefficient and won’t save you money. . And if the temperature in your home, away from radiators, drops too low, you could freeze and burst the pipes.

SPACE HEAT SAFETY

While sleeping with a space heater is a bad idea, propane space heaters are still a great idea today for providing supplemental heating to underheated and underheated spaces in the home, your garage, your attic and your lounge chairs.

Although safety features have greatly improved the safety of propane heaters, you still need to use them properly. We have some tips:

  • NEVER
  • leave propane heaters unattended. Even if you think you’ll only be gone for a minute, turn them off every time you leave the room.
  • Carefully read (and re-read) your owner’s manual so you know how to operate your heater safely.
  • Install CO detectors on every level of your home, outside all bedrooms, and in spaces where you use space heaters.
  • Check CO detectors twice a year and change the batteries each time.
  • If your CO detector is more than five years old, replace it.
  • Keep a space of at least three feet around radiators and keep children and pets out of this free space.
  • NEVER
  • put anything on your radiator.
  • Do not use your heater for heating or throwing blankets.
  • Have your propane heater checked and serviced annually by a professional service technician.
  • If you smell gas in your home or around a fireplace, DO NOT LIGHT IT! Get everyone out immediately and call 911 and
  • call Blue Flame
  • .

DISPLAY IN BED WITH SPACE HEATER OFF

Now that you know not to use a heater while you sleep, you may be worried about your heating costs if you need to turn up the heat. But there is a way to keep your bedroom warm without it.

  • Linen sheets, thick duvets, more than one blanket, electric blankets and weighted duvets help keep body heat close to your body.
  • Wear fleece or fleece pajamas with socks to stay warm.
  • Don’t get cold feet if you have to wake up at night. Wear slippers.
  • Keep daytime heating in the room by closing blinds or curtains when the sun goes down.
  • Eliminate drafts that cool the room by using insulated curtains, sun shades, tarps, door sweeps and bubble wrap.
  • Turn on the radiator in the evening to warm the room before you go to bed. When it’s time to go to bed, turn off the heating and close the bedroom door to keep the heat in the bedroom.

Contact the experts at Blue Flame to learn more about propane heating or which system would work best in your home. If it’s propane, we’ll make sure you’re fully charged and ready to go!
