Before trying anything else, try this:

  1. Place a rubber band over the stripped screw.
  2. Attach the head of your screwdriver, then slowly remove the screw.

Not allowed to use rubber bands? Instead, remove some steel wool or green abrasive from the scouring side of the sponge.

2. Drill a new slot

OccasionallyexpectA small hole in the stripped screw can allow your screwdriver to reach deeper into – and better grip – the stuck lanyard. If you’re going to try this method, be sure to use a drill designed for use on metal, not wood. And don’t go overboard; The screw head can come out!

3. Pull with pliers

  1. See if you can hold the screw with a pair
  2. pliers
  3. (also known as holding the visa).
  4. If you can get a tool to grab the screw, you should be able to rotate the pliers until the screw loosens and comes off.

It’s not the least laborious option, but under the right circumstances it works like a charm.

4. Try a flathead screwdriver

The stripping screw hascruciform head? If so, get a flat-head screwdriver narrow enough to fit (fully) into the Phillips-head hole. Remember, it takes real muscle to do this. To make this easier, it’s a good idea to combine this nifty strategy with the rubber band method described in option 1.

5. Improve your screwdriver grip with Hammer

If the screw is soft metal, which is most likely to be stripped in the first place, grab your hammer.

  1. Use a hammer to knock the screwdriver onto the screw head.
  2. Attach the screwdriver as firmly as possible to the screw head.

This can provide the extra grip you need to twist the lanyard.

6. Cut with the Oscillator Tool

If there is oneoscillating toolin your workshop, like a Dremel (and if you’re a dedicated DIYer, you should probably own one) – attach the metal cutting disc and make a new, deeper groove on the top screw. Then, with a flathead screwdriver, push it firmly into the indentation and twist it slowly.

7. Weld a nut to the screw head

If you have welding experience and the necessary equipment — and youreallyyou want to get rid of that annoying peel screw – it’s the last ditch you can do. Spot weld a nut onto the screw head, wait a sufficient amount of time, then remove the screw and nut bysocket wrench.

Armed with all of this advice, the next time you unscrew a screw, you can rest assured that it’s not the end of the world – it’s just another solvable, albeit annoying, problem. No trick will work all the time, but as you become more familiar with all of the options available to you for removing a stripped screw, you will gradually learn to recognize which situations require which particular solution.
