Learn How to Shade a Cone: 3D Cone Drawing Tutorial

A cone can be considered as a pyramid whose base is a polygon with an infinity of sides.

A cone may be considered a pyramid whose base is a polygon with an infinite number of sides.

If the image above depicts such a pyramid, and the light falls from the right, as shown in the diagram, it is obvious that faces 1, 2, 3, etc. gradually increase in tone. The darkest part is not along the outer edge of the darkest face, due to plane reflections… likewise the deepest shadow on the cone will be removed from the edge. Again, the highest points of the pyramids follow a straight line; and so it will be found on the cone. Also, the shade closest to the top will be the least affected by the reflection.

Step 1shading-cones- Shade the cast-shadow and the background

Shade the drop shadow and the background. Paint the edge cone of the lampshade lightly and set its tone to the same depth as its lightest part. The straight edge should not make the outline sharp, but allowed to be quite uneven, so that high light gradients can be rendered more faithfully.

2nd step

shading-cones-The darkest shade runs from the apex down the shade and near to its outer edge

The darkest shadow extends from the top towards the shadow and near its outer edge, as it fades to the left. The high point can be taken to represent the light falling on one of the faces of our imaginary pyramid; in this case, part 1.

Mark the high lamp with charcoal so that it can be easily swept away afterwards.

The halftone part turns into highlights. Be sure to keep the whole tone bright – much brighter, in fact, than reflected light.

Step 4

shading-cones- The portion in half-tone gradates to the highlight

Darken the drop shadow and shadow along its lowest edge. A slight gradient on the background near the light edge completes the design. The inclined cone can be easily represented by referring to the cylinder in the same position and the cone perpendicular to its axis.
