I like a tidy dashboard

I started the wiring tables before requesting the dome fault protection. Don’t get me wrong – I know it makes the house much safer; It is indisputable. But I never went crazy with extra pigtails attached to CAFCI breakers. They require an extra step to install, but more importantly to me, it’s hard to keep the panel tidy with the coiled wires running wild.

When I leave work, everything should be up and running, but I’m also proud that my installations look like they were done by a professional. So I was thrilled to learn that Square D has created a plug-in neutral load center that accepts plug-in neutral breakers without the need for additional braiding. They are installed like regular circuit breakers, so no more messy control panels – yes!

The Plug-On Neutral panel is available in both “Homeline” and “QO” ranges, and both of these panels will also work with traditional circuit breakers. I recently had the opportunity to install the Homeline version. And yes, I know no one will see my handwork until another breaker is added or replaced. Still, it’s nice to leave that job with an organized panel that looks like a real electrician installed it. Like on sunny days.

The other obvious benefit, of course, is that the Plug-On Neutral Breaker requires fewer steps, which saves time and reduces the chance of an apprentice forgetting to connect the braid (which I would never do) . So, homeowners, ask if your contractor uses a Square D load center. They might just give you some of the work in the invoice (contractors will hate me for that in the end).

Interesting combo breaker

I encountered two new technologies during this installation, the second being the Square D dual function circuit breaker. These circuit breakers combine CAFCI protection with GFCI protection. They are great for kitchens and laundry rooms, those are the exact two circuits I have used them on. It seems that most security advancements cause headaches for installers. Finally, there is an exception to this rule. Square D dual function, load center circuit breakers with plug-in neutral are available in low profile versions.
