How to Apply Spar Urethane

Looking for more information about Spar Urethane? How to dilute, how to sand and how to apply it correctly?

Well, if so, we’ve got you covered in this article.

Next you will find our information on Spar urethane as well as how to use it for specific purposes.

Let’s start with the basics first, then see how you can safely use the urethane spar to exploit all of its benefits.

What is Spar Urethane?

Spar varnish gets its nickname from the wooden pegs normally found on an ocean-going vessel.

Seagoing vessel struts experience significant wear and tear due to a number of environmental factors (such as wind, humidity, rain, and intense sunlight).

Thus, the spar varnish, which must be used for protection, must be extremely durable and tear-resistant.

So sailors created what we now call traditional varnish.

This comes with interesting concentrations of resin and solvent to provide a much tougher final finish.

Plus, it has the ability to provide a smooth appearance and resistance to damage from the sun’s UV rays.

As such, urethane spar is a mixture of spar varnish with urethane resin as the primary resin.

AndCox Minwaxis a leading brand known for offering high quality urethane spar polish. It is the most frequently used compound for outdoor furniture.

Apps

Keep in mind that due to its high resin content, Spar urethane can give a slightly yellow color to the wood.

Therefore it is not recommended for indoor furniture.

In addition, it is not suitable for large exterior surfaces (such as floors and partitions) where maintenance of wooden surfaces would be difficult.

Without a doubt, it is an excellent choice for any type of furniture that is frequently exposed to humidity.

This means you can use it to varnish wooden doors, windows, decorations, bathroom cabinets, kitchen counters, bar tops, shower seats, outdoor furniture or even your wooden boat.

How to apply Minwax Spar Urethane?

If you want to get the best results from Minwax Spar Urethane Clearcoat, you will need to thin it, apply a spar coat of urethane, and follow a thorough sanding process between coats.

Here are the detailed steps you need to follow…

1- Diluted Spar urethane

The main challenge with the polished urethane spar is that it is an extremely thick compound.

Therefore, the first thing you need to know about urethane spar is that it needs to be thinned to get the right finished product.

Properly diluting the urethane spar will allow you to use it without getting uneven or foaming results.

Becauseslimwater-based urethane spar, you may consider adding up to 10% water. This will allow you to apply it easily.

You can dilute the solvent-based urethane spar with mineral compounds up to 20%.

For spraying, you can thin the varnish further with 50% mineral oil or thin the paint as needed.HVLP injector.

2- Apply Spar urethane

You can choose to use a brush or an HVLP, but in our opinion you should be able to get more professional results with the brush.

If you’re using a brush, you’ll need to apply the mixture with the right brush, and the stroke with your right hand is both firm and subtle.

Sponge brushes are the best solution for using urethane stringers on woodwork.

Keep in mind that spraying or brushing the urethane spar will require you to add multiple coats to get everything covered accordingly.

Wiping is one of the most common methods of applying urethane stringer. And it can be used even by most inexperienced people.

When wiping, you should use a clean cotton ball or rag to have a soft absorbent.

Wet the cloth with thinner and dip it in your diluted mixture.

From there, you’ll need to apply thin coats of paint and overlap previous coats for a smooth finish.

Keep in mind that with this method your DIY project will take some time as you will have to repeat the process to get some thickness on the wood.

Many people choose to use a brush because it’s faster. You will need to clean and dry the wood before using the brush.

Make sure the helmsman’s urethane varnish is not too thick, while the ambient temperature is above 50 degrees F.

Our expert advice is to brush withwood grain, never cross the grain.

This will prevent visible marks on the end result and we can tell from our experience that it will provide a nice clean finish.

Alternatively, you can add multiple coats of urethane stringer paint on top of each other, but you need to make sure they dry accordingly.

And to ensure proper adhesion, it’s best to use 150 grit sandpaper to sand down the old finish or existing paint.

You are then free to put a new layer of urethane stringer on your wood.

how to apply spar urethane

Why is Spar urethane sanding important?

Indeed, it is quite simple to use and apply the urethane spar. But the hardest part is getting that perfect finish without any brush strokes.

Therefore, one of the most important actions you need to perform when applying urethane coxswain spar is sanding between coats.

This can help you avoid issues such as bubbled finishes and brush marks.

In addition, it will allow the new paint to adhere better, which will improve the final result.

How to sand?

To sand and smooth the surface, use fine sandpaper. 220 grit sandpaper may work for you.

Remember, sanding between coats doesn’t mean you have to create a smooth surface.

Instead, it’s about gently brushing away dust, debris, or other issues to get a rough area that could allow for a fresh coat of paint.oil paintingcomply.

After sanding (and before applying the next coat of urethane spar) you will need to make sure that there is no paint, wax, grease or old finish on your furniture.

So, right after cleaning everything, you can wipe it again with a clean towel so that no dust remains in place.

From then on, you can start applying another thin coat of urethane with a spray, brush, or rag.

Allow the coat to dry for up to four hours and repeat the sanding process.

How Much Spar Urethane Should You Apply?

As seen above, applying more than one coat of clear coat is important to achieve the best sheen and shine.

Globally, three layers of clothingis more than enough to varnish exterior wood with Minwax Helmsman Urethane Varnish.

Remember never to sand after the last coat of urethane stringer.

Also, it is best to let the surface dry for at least a day before use.

How long does Spar urethane take to dry?

Urethane spar drying times are often based on environmental conditions and other factors.

Under normal conditions (i.e. 70°F and 50% relative humidity), it can be dry to the touch in approximately 2 hours.

However, you can recoat the surface after 6-8 hours.

The surface is ready to use in 24 hours.

But you should give more time (up to 3 days) before you start using your polished surface.

Remember – you will need to dry the surface longer in cooler temperatures or high humidity.

Spar Varnish Vs. Spar Urethane: What’s the Difference?

Spar varnish and spar urethane are two compounds that look similar but are actually very different.

The basic difference between the two is that the spar varnish can chip or flake over time, but the urethane spar cannot.

Instead, Spar urethane will make hard surfaces shiny and maintain a lasting shine without compromise.

Spar varnish

Spar polish is usually made with natural oils such as flaxseed, soy or tung.

These oils act as base oils and are integrated with solvents or resins to create a protective formulation for the wood.

When the paint is applied to the surface and dries, it creates a shiny surface.

In general, Spar varnish protects wood from damage or discoloration caused by water, heat, UV rays, stains and solvents.

Depending on climatic conditions, the drying time between coats of spar varnish can be up to 24 to 36 hours.

Although it provides a scratch resistant protective coating, the downside of using gloss paint is that it will cake, chalk or peel off over time.

Therefore, it must be resurfaced periodically to create a protective layer.

Spar urethane

Spar urethane, on the other hand, is a synthetic product usually made from water- or oil-based products.

The water-based urethane spar dries very quickly and cleans easily.

While the application of the oil-based urethane spar requires more time. You may need to wait several hours between coats.

Also, you will need to apply slowly and in a thin layer to avoid drips.

Depending on the climatic conditions, the drying time of the urethane spar is relatively short and can range from 30 minutes to 120 minutes.

Related FAQs

How long does the urethane spar last?

Sterile urethane and oil-based varnishes do not fail prematurely and can last up to 10-15 years if applied correctly.

How long the gloss can fade will also depend on the type of finish you have applied (like satin, gloss, etc.).

However, the water-based urethane spar has a shorter lifespan and can last around 3-5 years depending on conditions.

Why does the urethane spar turn white?

Spar urethane can often turn white if there is excess moisture in the wood.

This usually happens when varnished on wooden boats. Although the color of the urethane spar changes, it is not a sign of deterioration.

Can you put urethane stringer on the stains?

You can completely cover the stain with Helmsman® Spar Urethane varnish.

But there may be a slight discoloration (translucent yellow to slightly brownish), especially when covered with light color stains on the surface of the wood.

Should you remove the old urethane spar before recoating?

Yes, if there is a thick layer of paint on the surface of the wood, it is better to remove this paint before repainting.

You can use a little chemical waxing, then scrape the urethane spar from the surface using a plastic scraper.

Avoid using a metal scraper as it may damage the surface. When finished, wipe the surface with a cloth dampened in mild soapy water to remove any chemical residue.

Key point

Applying Spar urethane is one of the best ways to properly protect your wood surfaces (both inside and out).

The oils contained will allow the finish to contract and expand without causing it to crack, peel or bubble.

This not only enhances the natural beauty of the wood, but also prevents the wood from being damaged by various agents for a long time.

Do you have to sand between coats of spar urethane?

You must sand between coats to create a gritty surface for the next layer to cling to. But you can also use sanding to take out the blemishes in all but the top coat.

Is 2 coats of spar urethane enough?

For chairs, benches, chests and other such pieces, 1 to 2 coats should do the trick. Any wooden pieces that will be used outdoors or under a covered porch should only have “spar varnish” or “boat varnish” applied. Never more than 3 coats.

How long does it take spar urethane to dry?

Dry and recoat times are based on 70°F and 50% relative humidity. Allow more time at cooler temperatures. Dries to the touch in 2 hours, to handle in 4-6 hours, and can be recoated in 8 hours. Surface is ready for light use in 24 hours and full use in 3 days.

How do I get a smooth finish with spar urethane?

Wet the applicator with your thinner and then dip it into your diluted finish. Wipe on smooth thin coats, overlapping the previous stroke with each pass by about half. This method will result in a super smooth finish with no bubbles and no brush strokes.

Why is my spar urethane sticky?

Polyurethane Still Feels Sticky After 48 Hours

Polyurethane is usually dry to the touch between 2 – 12 hours. If polyurethane still feels sticky after 48 hours, it could be that the wood has natural oil preventing the polyurethane from drying. Once the first coat dries, the subsequent polyurethane coats should be fine.

Can you buff spar urethane?

If you try to buff a rough varnish surface, you will burn through the topcoat of varnish and you will see the coats in layers. Spar varnish is also a soft finish, which makes it difficult to rub out. To rub out a top that has a reasonably flat final coat, start with 400 grit and work through the grits to 800 or 1000.

Is 4 coats of polyurethane too much?

Are 4 Coats of Polyurethane too Much? In most circumstances, you only need three coats of oil-based polyurethane. You can use four or five coats of water-based polyurethane for hardwood floors, especially those that will see a lot of traffic or a lot of moisture.

Can you put too many coats of polyurethane?

You can even use one coat and be fine. However, remember not to apply more than 4 coats of oil-based polyurethane or 5 coats of water-based polyurethane. Unlike when you apply less, you can’t get away with applying too many coats regardless of the surface that you painted.

What happens if you don’t sand between coats of polyurethane?

For some types of poly, nothing happens if you don’t sand between coats of polyurethane. However, most polyurethane will not adhere properly if you skip sanding dust nibs and brush marks on the finish. The polyurethane finish will eventually peel off or become deformed.

Does spar urethane have a shelf life?

Polyurethane does expire, but it should last you a while. Generally, an unopened can of polyurethane will last you close to three years, while an opened one should stay usable for about 12 months.

How long does spar urethane last in the can?

between 10 to 15 years
When applied correctly, and depending on the conditions they are subjected to, Oil-based Spar urethane can last anywhere between 10 to 15 years, while the water-based counterpart can last up to 3 to 5 years.

Do you sand the last coat of spar urethane?

No, you don’t need to sand the final coat of polyurethane. The only time you should sand the final coat of polyurethane is if you haven’t gotten a smooth finish. Different problems can occur when you apply polyurethane, such as dust nibs, bubbles, and streaks.

Can you apply spar urethane with a roller?

Yes! You can use a roller to apply polyurethane (and definitely should) when working on floors and large furniture. Applying polyurethane using a roller is easier, and the drying time is short. The roller also removes brush marks and prevents over-application on the surface.

Is curing the same as drying?

If these elements are not maintained properly, the finish could dry too quickly. Curing occurs when residual solvents leave the film and it begins crosslinking with oxygen in the air to develop strength, toughness, abrasion resistance and chemical resistance.

In this video, I’m sanding and refinishing the spar urethane clear gloss coat on our exterior mahogany front door.

This is a solid mahogany wood exterior door, now about 20 years old (April 2021). 6 years before this video, I sanded the door down to the bare wood, restained it, and applied 3 coats of spar urethane clear gloss coat. Well, after those 6 years of afternoon sun beating down on it, the spar urethane wasn’t holding up anymore. Since I wasn’t ready to sand back down to the bare wood and restain this time, I decided instead to sand and refinish just the clear gloss coat of the spar urethane to get a few more years of protection before having to undertake the whole refinishing process again. I applied 4 coats of the spar urethane, spread out over several days.

The process requires a covered area with plenty of ventilation (like an open garage bay), good weather with low humidity, several days, and plenty of patience. But in the end it’s worth it — to keep a solid mahogany door that would cost a small fortune if purchased new today.

Hopefully this will protect the door for 3 (or 4? or 5?) more years, at which point I will undertake the whole refinishing process again by sanding back down to the bare wood, restaining, and then reapplying several clear coats of spar urethane.

I used the following (NOT sponsored in any way):
