Fall is not the time to give uplawn care, especially fertilizer. In fact, your lastfertilizethe year is the most important. Let me explain why.

Why fertilize your lawn in the fall? When to Fertilize Your Lawn in the Fall

Why fertilize the lawn in the fall?

At the end of summer, your lawn is tired. Like you after a long, tiring day at work. You’re tired, sore, exhausted and want nothing more than to eat a nutritious meal and rest your feet for the evening.

Your lawn has struggled with a long, relentlessly hot summer. It must withstand extreme heat, humidity and drought. It has been trampled by children, dogs and over-harvested. Weeds, insects and disease have taken their toll. Your lawn is hungry and tired. He wanted a good meal before settling into a long, well-deserved hibernation.

So why fertilize your lawn in the fall?

  • This is your last chance to thicken up your lawn and restore it to its original shape in the summer.
  • fall fertilizer
  • Helps regenerate roots lost due to hot, humid or dry summer.
  • Fertilizing in the fall strengthens your lawn so it can better withstand the harsh winter conditions ahead.
  • Good food will fill your lawn’s gas tank before you go to bed. This way he has plenty of stored energy for a good start next spring.

When to Fertilize Your Lawn in the Fall

The best time to apply your last fertilization is between August 15 and October 1. Ideally, your last pasture should be six to eight weeks before average.first frostin your region. So if the date is October 10, like in Minneapolis/St. Paul, you must choose the period from August 15 to September 1 as your last application. If you live in Des Moines, where the average first hard frost is October 27, you should aim for your last fertilization six to eight weeks earlier, or September 1 through September 15.

Scheduling fall fertilizing around average frost days gives your lawn plenty of time to absorb all of its nutrients before entering the dormant phase. It is not necessary or advantageous to transfer nutrients throughout the winter.

If you fertilize too late, you’re keeping your lawn in place after bedtime when all it wants to do is go to bed for the year. Late fertilizationcool season grasswill keep it actively growing as cold, snowy weather sets in in winter, potentially causing winter kill and disease problems next spring.

What fertilizer to use in the fall

The answer here depends on local ordinances or state laws. Some states do not allow the use oflawn fertilizercontains phosphorus (middle number *). Although phosphorus is essential for root growth during seed and soil formation and in the fall to promote root regrowth, many soils naturally contain phosphorus so it is not necessary to fertilize it. any further.

If you live in a phosphorus-free community, use a fertilizer that contains a readily available source of nitrogen (first number) and a fertilizer high in potassium (third number). This will properly feed your lawn in the winter. Correct numbers would be 24-0-12 or 21-0-21.

If you live in a city or state that allows fertilizers containing phosphorus, this can add another layer of plant protection toprepare your lawnfor a harsh winter. A good example would be 24-5-10 or 20-5-20. A lawn starter fertilizer, such as 14-14-14 or 12-24-12 will also work.

Liquid fertilizer or soluble fertilizerFertilizers with similar NPK ratios can be used. However, understand that the recommended application rate of a sprayable lawn fertilizer will provide fewer nutrients per application than granular products. However, using an end-of-pipe sprayer for fall fertilization is still an acceptable method. You may need to apply two applications a few weeks apart to experience its full benefits.

* Fertilizer comes with NPK. N for nitrogen, promotes leaf growth, green; P for phosphorus, which aids in root growth; and K for potassium, which helps maintain strong growth.

How to Fertilize Your Lawn in the Fall

Approach your fall fertilizing the same way you would. Follow the coverage recommendations for the selected product. You need to split the application in half and then make two turns in different directions. For example, if your fall fertilizer bag says it will cover 5,000 square feet, look for the setting onspreaderper 10,000 square feet (5,000 x 2). This will close the spreader port, allowing only half the recommended speed to flow. Then make two consecutive passes at that spreader setting. This will apply the suggested total using two cards instead of one. This ensures even, even coverage, reducing the risk of missing pieces on your lawn.

After you finish your fall fertilization, be sure to wash down your spreader thoroughly. This removes any remaining fertilizer residue that can corrode spreader components over the winter. Consult your owner’s manual for additional recommended maintenance steps beforewintering.
