Multi-read content how to seal a tire

A few weeks ago I found myself with a flat tire insideRX8. Air has been leaking slowly for a few days so I think I have a nail in it as usual. I used these steps to check the tires for air leaks and seal them with some kind of homemade tire sealant.

For a more in-depth look at how to check your tires for leaks, read this guide

Checking for tire leaks with soapy water

How to Seal Tires With a Homemade Tire Bead Welding Machine

How to check a tire for air leaks and seal it

  1. Spray soapy water on the tires and look for bubbles
  2. Remove the wheel from the vehicle and spray soapy water over the entire tread. Notice the bubbles, in particular – I found no gas leaks. So I go to stage 2, which I almost forgot existed, because I always find a nail in my tire throughout stage 1.
  3. Spray the tire valve stem with soapy water and check for air bubbles
  4. Spray soapy water on the tire valve stem and the tire bead where it contacts the wheel. Beware of bubbles, the valve stem shows nothing, but when soapy water builds up around the bead/rim of the tire, the bubbles reveal their horrible bubble face. Along the entire rear diameter of the wheel, the air escaped well. Fair enough. No nails for Jeremy this time.
  5. Break the wheel tire so you can check the leak area
  6. Now, although I would love to have this machine, I don’t have a fancy tire machine to smash the tire particles from the wheel. Normally, without a tire machine, this task would be almost impossible, but I had an excavator with other ideas. You may remember that little shovel trick from a while back. If you want this to work you MUST remove the core from the valve stem. Then you simply stomp on the shovel as you would in the garden.
  7. Jump, jump and jump to success and the beads will separate from the rim
  8. Then I stuffed some leather welding gloves in there so I could feel my surroundings a bit. Now at this point I was expecting to find a bunch of aluminum corrosion causing my slow gas leak. However, in a strange episode, this is not the case. The rim, except for the slight dent, is in perfect condition. The aluminum is spotlessly clean and the tires themselves look good too. Strange, but sometimes strange things still happen in this world.
  9. Reattach the tire to the rim
  10. Ideally, a tire gluing machine should be used, as it works very well and is suitable for this exact situation. Unfortunately, I don’t because I don’t have such a growth mindset, and it was very, very early on a Sunday morning. Improv became the name of the game, so I jumped into another car and headed to the local grocery store to find a fun solution to my dilemma. Fortunately, my solution came in the form of an “Extra Super Hold” hairspray. It’s correct. I said hairspray. I dried the tire and wheel, put a nice mist of hairspray on the nut, and filled the tire with 32 psi of super heat. All day. Everything went on hold. Just read the box, it’s been over a month now and the tires are still holding air as they should (it really is). I have since bought a new pot of tire glue to prepare for next time. As they say, “necessity is the mother of invention”. Extra Super Hold Hairspray – It’s not just for spiky hair and BMX grips anymore.

How to seal a tire to the rim at home using common items found in the home. I had a flat tire on some small farm equipment and a friend told me about this simple technique that used a rope or strap. In this tire mounting video I used a winch strap around the tire to create pressure in the middle of the tire to push the outer wall against the wheel rim as tight as possible to create full contact between tire and rim.. The burst of air from my compressor was fast enough to form the seal. This tire only requires 24 lbs. of pressure. Once you have obtained a seal, stop so you can properly adjust the pressure without overfilling the tire. This technique can be used for larger tires such cars and truck as well. This method may come in handy when stranded on the side of the road with limited tools. You probably won’t have an air compressor with you to fill the tire, but at least you can call a friend to possibly bring you the supplies. After all, a tow truck would cost you more than the purchase of a small air compressor ($150) and some straps. You can also save money on tire mounting and buy a discount tire online. It’s worth a DIY try to seal the tire and rim before you hire a pro to do the tire mounting.
