Replace a wired smoke detector

Photo 1: Disconnecting old hard-wired smoke detectors
Switch off. Remove the alarm and use a non-contact voltage detector to check the wires to make sure the power is off. Disconnect the wire and remove the mounting plate from the junction box.Photo 2: Connecting a new wired smoke detector
Screw the new mounting plate to the junction box and wire it. Plug the harness into the new alarm, insert the cord into the box and mount the alarm to the disc.

If the smoke alarms in your home are at least 10 years old, it’s time to replace them. To begin, remove each alarm from its mounting plate. Most alarms have arrows that tell you how to rotate the alarm to dismiss it. You may need to use both hands and twist hard. looking for more informationAdvice on smoke detectors.

If you find that your alarm is connected to a wire, don’t worry. Replacing a hard-wired smoke detector is almost as easy as replacing a battery-operated version. New alarms are inexpensive. If your old alarms are connected with three wires as shown here, that means the alarms are interconnected – when one alarm detects smoke, all will sound. To make sure your new alarms work together, buy alarms from one brand and model and replace them all at the same time. You will also need a non-contact voltage detector (image 1) and a wire separator.

Turn off the power at the main electrical panel and turn off the old alarm (Image 1). Check that the power is off with your voltage tester. If the wireNotconnected as shown here (with each wire connected to another wire of the same color), make a simple sketch so you can connect your new alarm the same way. Your old alarm may be connected to two wires instead of three. Your new alarm will have a third “connected” wire (usually red or orange), but leave it disconnected if the old alarm only has two connections. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for further details. Write “Replace in 2031” (or whenever it turns 10) on the back or mounting plate of the alarm. Turn the device back on and press the test button on the alarm. If you connect three wires to each alarm, they will all ring at the same time.

Make a tight connection between the string and the strong wire

To install a wired smoke alarm, light, or dimmer, you usually need to connect a solid wire to a “braided” wire, which is basically a small bundle of wires. Usually the wire connector does not catch on the stranded wire but just pushes it down creating a poor connection. Here’s how to make a reliable connection: Remove the extra insulation so that the exposed braid is about 1/8 inch longer than the exposed solid wire. Then twist the strands together and screw the connector onto the two wires.

If you need to replace your old smoke detector there’s no need to worry! It’s pretty easy to do even for beginners and I’ll show you how step by step in this video. I’m replacing my old units with the FireX detectors by Kidde. These are very common in a lot of homes and I have four of them in the house shown in the video.

Only simple tools are needed in addition to a basic circuit tester which will light up if there’s still power going through the electrical wiring.

Make sure you shut off power at your breaker box before you begin. After the new smoke detector is installed and the power is restored you should hear a beep. On the Kidde smoke detectors, the last step is to pull out the plastic tab to activate the backup battery. A green light shows that the detector is powered on!

In all I replaced four smoke detectors in this house and as you’ll see in this video it’s not difficult to do. If this video was helpful please give me a thumbs up and don’t forget to hit the subscribe button to stay up to date on all my weekly videos!
