Today’s thermostats essentially do the same thing, but since then technology has come a long way. Essentially a heat-activated switch, a thermostat has a temperature sensor that causes the switch to open or close, completing or breaking the electrical circuit that powers the home’s heating or cooling system. Programmable electronic thermostat

Electronic thermostats use electronic thermostats and electrical circuits to sense temperature changes and turn on heating or cooling equipment. Like a small computer, they are programmable; Their timers allow you to warm up your home before you get up in the morning and before you get home from work and are set to different temperatures for different times of the day. This means you can tailor the room temperature closely to your needs, ensuring comfort without wasting energy. Electromechanical thermostat

Electromechanical thermostats have some type of mechanical temperature sensing device – usually a coil or strip of two metals. As the name suggests, this type is made up of two connected metals. Changes in temperature cause these metals to expand and contract at different rates, causing the coil or strip to move.The electromechanical thermostat has a bimetallic coil that moves with a change in temperature, a change in inclination on a small vial filled with mercury completes an electrical circuit. © Don Vandervort, HomeTips

A coil or strip of two metals connected to a device that completes the circuit. In the case of Honeywell’s electromechanical thermostat, a biometallic spiral sensor attaches to a small glass vial containing mercury; the movement of the coil tilts the bottle in one direction or the other.

Since one of the properties of mercury is to conduct electricity, the circuit is complete when the mercury flows to one end of the flask where two electrical contacts separate.

The thermostat operates the heating and cooling elements with two contact points at each end of the bottle. When the flask is tilted in one direction, the mercury flows to that end and completes a circuit called heat. When the system is switched to the cooling cycle, mercury flows to the other end of the flask to activate refrigeration.

Disposal of small amounts of mercury from this type of thermostat has become a problem in recent years. Pilot programs are being tested in several states to recycle old mercury-containing thermostats; Honeywell is very active in these initiatives.

Some electromechanical thermostats, such as those made by GE, operate similarly but complete the circuit with a magnetic reed switch.

Zoned heating

A sophisticated zone-controlled home air conditioning system divides the home into separate zones that can each be controlled by separate settings and times on its own thermostat. With zone control, the thermostat opens and closes dampers, sending hot or cold air when and where it’s needed.
