5 ways to remove hard water stains

If your once shiny chrome glass shower doors and faucets are now dull and yellowed, the key to restoring their shine is to remove hard water stains. Here are five effective methods using household items you probably already have.

The vinegar

Vinegar is an all-natural and safe household cleaner with amazing resistance to hard water stains. Pour some into a spray bottle and spray on any surface where you see hard water spots. Leave on for about 5 to 15 minutes to give the vinegar time to break down the minerals in the powdery mildew stain.

If the vinegar starts to dry, spray more water on the surface to keep it moist. For large vertical surfaces like shower doors, you can dip paper towels in vinegar and stick them on the glass to keep the surface wet for the allotted time.

After a fairly long soak, scrub the surface with an old toothbrush. Use a brush with coarser bristles when cleaning large areas.

You can use many different types of vinegar to remove hard water stains, including white vinegar and apple cider vinegar. Try to use what you have on hand first. If that doesn’t work, look for a cleaner, more acidic vinegar to fight hard water stains.

Hydrogen peroxide

Regular hydrogen peroxide works wonders for stubborn soap scum and water spots that accumulate on tubs and metal fixtures. For extra cleaning power, make a paste with cream of tartar, baking powder, and apply to the yellowed area. Let it sit for up to 30 minutes, then scrub it off with a damp sponge to reveal the results of your efforts.

Baking soda

Hard water stains on ceramic tile can be annoying. Minerals leave residue that makes even the most expensive bricks and mortar seem cheap.

To fix the problem, apply a mixture of baking soda and water to the affected areas. Let this natural cleaner soak into the stain for a few minutes. Then, gently scrub with a toothbrush or other bristle brush to reveal like-new tiles.

Tube of fluoridated toothpaste

You brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste to clean and protect your teeth, but did you know this bathroom metal also works to remove hard water stains? Toothpaste works best on small metal appliances and glass surfaces. It even works on dishes!

If you want to get rid of hard water in a pleasant way, you will need to install a water softener. This system removes minerals from water before it goes through your pipes, preventing hard water spots so your plumbing fixtures look their best. A water softener also helps you avoid thesehard water problem, such as clogged faucets and showers, malfunctioning water heaters, shabby clothes, lifeless hair and irritated skin.

Popular questions about how to remove water spots

how to remove water spots?

All you want to do is soak the cement stain with vinegar. Let the sponge sit on the stain for 2-3 minutes so the vinegar can do its job. Then, simply flush the area with clean water. Repeat as necessary.

What removes hard water spots?

Slowly add white vinegar to baking soda until it forms a paste. Spread over affected surfaces, let it sit for 15 minutes before wiping clean with a dry microfiber cleaning cloth. This is one of the best natural hard water spot removers for quickly brightening bathroom surfaces.

How do you get rid of water spots quickly?

Mix 1 part regular white vinegar with 1 part distilled water (soft water is good too). It’s better not to use regular tap water which contains minerals. Apply the vinegar/water solution with a spray bottle on to the affected paint finish. Allow mixture to work for up to 10 minutes.

How do you remove water spots at home?

Are water spots permanent?

This can be from rain, sprinklers, water puddles, washing your car at home, a car wash, kids with squirt guns, pretty much any water that has not been filtered to remove minerals. These harmless looking spots can permanently damage your cars paint by etching into the clear coat.

Does WD-40 remove water spots?

WD-40® Multi-Use Product is great when it comes to mirror cleaning and water spot removal. It is easy to use and all you have to do is spray the liquid on to the affected area and wipe it clean with a clean cloth. It will leave your glass windows and mirrors sparkling clean and as good as new.

Does WD-40 remove hard water stains?

You probably didn’t know you could use WD-40 for bathroom cleaning, but because it’s a lubricant that’s not as harsh as most chemicals you use in the bathroom, it’s great for getting rid of hard water stains and other stubborn stains without harming your surfaces.

How do you remove etched water spots?

White Vinegar is acidic in nature and will help remove water spots if they’re reasonably fresh and new. Wash and dry your car as per normal, put some White Vinegar onto a cloth like our Big Softie cloth, then gently wipe the affected areas. Add more White Vinegar as needed until all of the spots are gone.

Will a clay bar remove water spots?

Typically a washing, white vinegar and water solution, or a clay bar will not remove the water marks, they only work when it’s a light residue on the surface. Unfortunately many water marks actually lightly etch in to the surface and in these instances you’ll need a stronger option.

Will car wash remove water spots?

Car Wash Soap

When it comes to soap, you must only use car-washing soap. Only soap that is particularly for cleaning cars would do the best job for cleaning your car. Do not use dish soap and laundry detergents. Not only can they leave water spots when you wash your car, but they can also damage your car’s paint.

Does vinegar hurt car paint?

It is not recommended to use vinegar on car paint. As a result of vinegar’s acidic nature, it can damage the clear coat and make the paint look dull over time. Moreover, vinegar does not provide the same lubrication as car shampoo or quick detailer, which can result in scratches if used for hand washing.

How long does it take water spots to form?

Water stains on your ceiling or wall can appear in as little as one hour or up to one day, depending on the cause of the problem and the amount of exposure to moisture.

Will wax remove water spots?

Wax can remove water spots if they are very fresh. However, often waxes won’t remove more stubborn water spots. Instead you’ll usually need to use a paintwork cleanser or water spot remover spray. You should only ever try using wax to remove water spots on a clean car though.

Can water spots be removed?

Vinegar will remove the spots from the aluminum bumper, plastic taillights and rubber trim. The good news is getting rid of water spots is easy (if you chase after them). A good conventional solution is a quick detailing spray after routine washing.

Whatever the scenario, don’t leave water spots unattended for too long. The longer they bake onto the surface, the harder they will be to remove.

Pro tips to prevent water spots:

1) Don’t wash your car in direct sunlight or heavy heat. After washing your car, make sure you dry it as quickly as possible using a microfiber drying towel

2) Use a quick detail spray as a drying aid. This helps add lubrication during the drying but also helps lift any minerals left behind with the water.

3) Go the extra mile by using a car dryer to blow water from window seals, door jams, door sills, mirrors and grilles. This will reduce water drips.

4) Avoid parking near sprinkler systems. Also, test the water hardness levels in your home. You might want to invest in a water softener or water deionizer system. Watch my video:

5) Apply paint protection to your paintwork. A wax, a paint sealant or a ceramic coating will greatly reduce the chances of developing water spots due to the hydrophobic properties of that protection. The protection will repel water and prevent it from sticking to the paint.

Water spot damage begins as droplets of water land on paintwork and other automotive surfaces. As the water evaporates, all the minerals inside the droplet are left behind as a stain on the surface. If caught soon enough, these minerals can be simply wiped away during a car wash or with a quick detail spray. If left overnight, the spot may stick harder, but they can typically be removed with a clay bar. Beyond this level of contamination, water spots can etch deeper into the surface and cause permanent damage that may require polishing, wet sanding, and even repainting.
