Make designing your dream bedroom easy withprintable room planner.

Learn all about shiplap decorations. Finishing the canvas with a border will give it a finished look and cover any uneven edges.

I usedrabbetas accents in certain rooms of my house. I love the vintage touch it brings to a room.

My favorite part of installing shiplap is adding the decorations.

This detail really brings it to life and can give it a different look depending on your choice.

Plus, it gives the shiplap a nice, finished look.

Shiplap Trim: Angle

Turns can be tricky, but luckily I have a few solutions.

Inside the corner

in mychildren’s bathroom, my cuts were perfect and I was able to repair the seam withputty painted. This creates a seamless look.

inside corner of shiplap

Inmy bathroom, I usedhalf.

My cuts in that play weren’t accurate, so the quarterback was able to hide that face. Once painted, the trim will disappear.

Be sure to use paint putty to hide the seams!

using quarter round trim for shiplap

Alternatively, you can usesunken cove.

outside corner

For outside corners I always usecutting angle.

Cutting the corners prevents the edges from being too sharp if you scrape them. It also hides less than perfect cuts.

outside corner of shiplapIt might need to be repainted, but I’m considering repainting the whole room, so that’ll have to wait.

The corner trim provides a nice rounded corner.

How to style Shiplap

You have 2 options for the top of the burlap.

The trim can cover part of the top and a small part of the canvas, or it can sit on top.

In my child’s bathroom, I chose the first version. thedecoration in the shape of the letter Lwith a lip that fits snugly over the top of the wood. (See photo above.)

In this bathroom, I went for a more modern look and opted for a 1 x 3 that sits on top of the wood.

Floor for Shiplap

The choice of plinth depends on the type of shell you are using. If you are using a thicker canvas, you will need a thicker baseboard.

In my child’s bathroom, we removed the old baseboard and replaced it with a 1×4 board to create a modern look.

green shiplap walls in bathroom

For a traditional look, consider adding a thicker baseboard with more detail.

In my bathroom, we use thin luan for the ship’s edge, so we can keep the old baseboards.

Convert Shiplap to Tile

There are many siding options where the tile meets the shiplap.

You can use any trim with a flat back for this placement. For a modern look, consider using simple decor (likenet of wood).

In this bathroom I used a more decorative detail.

Finishing tablecloth

The most important part of adding burlap trim is trimming the edges. Caulk allows the entire project to come together and look seamless.

For best results, useputty painted. Silicone glue cannot be covered and will not look good.

Be sure to paint the canvas even if it is the same color as your burlap.

Unpainted putty cannot be cleaned and attracts dust. Sealing the putty will prevent it from becoming a dust magnet.

Quick Patch Tip: Cut a small hole with a utility knife, not the cutter on the soldering iron. This will avoid a lot of clutter from excess putty.

Popular questions about how to end shiplap on an outside corner

how to end shiplap on an outside corner?

How To Finish Shiplap Edges Using Caulk. One of the easiest ways to achieve a clean edge is by using caulk. Caulk will give you a smooth edge and can be painted, so it’s perfect for corners. It will fill in any rough edges and cuts that may not be perfect.

How do you finish outside corners of shiplap?

Depending on whether it is an inside or outside corner, you may want to finish them differently. We recommend either using corner trim or butt-jointing boards together at an angle. An unfinished corner can draw unwanted attention, so you’ll want to make sure they are finished properly without any gaps.

How do you do a corner in shiplap?

To install around windows, doors, outlets and such, cut holes in the shiplap boards using a jig saw to enable it to fit around the obstacle. Caulk all the corner seams and verify all nail holes are filled. Sand all of the walls smooth, prime and paint. Lastly, install floor and ceiling trim.

Do you Mitre shiplap corners?

Outside corners are slightly more complicated for shiplap walls, than inside corners. You really don’t want to try to miter your corners, for two reasons. First of all, just like the inside corner, the outside isn’t exactly 90 degrees, for the same reason.

Do you put trim around shiplap?

Shiplap walls laid horizontally work even when there isn’t crown molding to finish it. The top board is installed right up against our ceiling and caulked (it was installed the same way in my old kitchen). If you installed the boards vertically you’ll likely need a finishing trim of some sort at the ceiling.

Do you start shiplap from top or bottom?

The first key to installing shiplap is to always, always, always start at the bottom of your wall! This little piece of advice is actually good for two very important reasons. First, by starting at the bottom, it allows gravity to be a helpful aid as you work your way up the walls.

How do you install shiplap at an angle?

How do you cut shiplap at an angle?

How do you finish the top of a shiplap wall?

Can you use liquid nail for shiplap?

Shiplap can be installed directly to sheet rock/drywall. Simply mark the stud locations for nailing the shiplap or you can apply a construction adhesive such as liquid nails.

Where do you nail shiplap?

Should shiplap be staggered?

Stagger the shiplap boards so that the end joints are spread out along the wall or ceiling randomly. If you stack seams on top of each other, you’ll create an eyesore that draws your eye to the dark lines of the jointed ends. Building pros agree that staggering seams provides a better looking aesthetic.

How do you trim corners?

Can I use a brad nailer for shiplap?

A finish nailer or brad nailer is the easiest and most efficient tool to use when installing your new shiplap or tongue and groove. They can be purchased/rented relatively cheaply from your local hardware store, they’re lightweight, and are simple enough that a 12 year old can use them!

Can I just glue shiplap?

Tip: You can attach your shiplap boards with construction adhesive or nails or both.

Welcome back to the channel! This video is Part 4 for Farm House renovation series. In this video we finalize the updating of the master bedroom at our farmhouse project. As we mentioned in the previous video this old farmhouse was built in the mid 1950s, and has most likely not had any updates since that time. That’s where we came in and decided to remove the out dated wall paper and add a shiplap accent wall. You’ll notice that the floors have already been re-finished. For information on the floors please watch Part 1 and Part 2 of this video series. The flooring videos will be linked at the end of this one.

In this video Sean shows you in a step by step guild how he finished a shiplap accent wall by using to quarter round for trim. In the Part 3 of this video series, (linked at the end) Sean removed the wall paper, next he went to our local hardware store and found the jackpot! A ton of shiplap was damaged and marked down to 75% off. He had to look through the stack to find usable boards, but it was worth the effort. By doing so, Sean was able to save 75% off the total cost of this build. That enabled us to invest money into other much needed projects at the house. It’s an awesome video and we highly recommend you check it out.

We hope you found this video informative! Please take the time to like the video and follow along by subscribing to the channel! We’ve got more videos coming up from our Farmhouse build, and can’t wait for you to see what’s next!
