How to remove old weatherstripping

To peel the weather, simply pull the foam strips out of the door or window by hand. Stripping that is secured in place with nails or screws requires a more tedious process to locate and remove all the pins.

Options for new weather notifications

There is no shortage of weather stripping options at hardware stores and home centers. As always, the cheaper and easier the product is to install, the less effective and durable it will be over time.

Non-stick foam tapeinexpensive – costs less than a square meter – and covers and sticks are as easy to install as pie. It works best when the bottom of the window is closed at the sill or the door is closed at the door frame. It is the compression that creates the seal. Don’t expect this product to last more than 3-5 years.

V-shaped weatherstripping, sometimes called anti-stress weather stripping, is the best choice for the side profiles of double hung windows or sealed doors. This product has an opening spring to close openings and seal leaky windows and doors.

Inexpensive peelable and adhesive v-shaped vinyl(only $0.50 per foot) easy to install but won’t outlast foam tape. More expensive bronze or bronze styles cost up to $2 per foot and need to be nailed in place, but they look better and will last for decades.

Tubular rubber or vinyl spacersis more effective in sealing large, irregular openings, such as around old doors. These hollow tubes are large enough to fill large gaps but flexible enough to compress almost flat. Types are nailed in place longer than shell and sticky types. Prices range from less than $1 per foot for the peel and stick type to $1.25 per foot for the spot nail type.

Surface preparation

Before installing new weather-resistant siding, start with a smooth, clean, and dry surface. Remove all old adhesive using adhesive cleaner and possibly light sanding. Fill and sand old nail holes. If the old screw holes cannot be reused, fill them in and sand them down.

Installation Tips

  • Some types of nonstick should only be applied when the temperature is at least 50 degrees. Check the product label.
  • Start with a small area to make sure the door or window opens and closes smoothly before you finish the whole job.
  • Measure twice before cutting to avoid confusion and waste.
  • Cut rubber and vinyl with scissors or a utility knife, and metal with a tin tube. Be careful not to deform the thin metal when cutting.
  • Make sure the side of the V-shaped opening faces the elements to prevent moisture from getting inside.

Install weatherstripping

Type of weatherproof adhesive:Remove the back panel and press firmly into place. Removing the backing as you move around helps prevent the sticky part of the tape from accidentally sticking to something it shouldn’t.

Stripping the nails by time:Secure the strips in place by driving nails through the pre-punched holes. For double hung windows, you will need to install the bottom half, drop the screen, then install the top half.

Fix drafty vinyl windows by replacing the window weatherstripping. American Craftsman 8500 series windows can be refurbished by installing new pile weather stripping on the window sashes. The weather weather strip can be replaced on the window screens too.

Extend the life of vinyl windows instead of replacing them. If you are the original owner of these Anderson manufactured windows, replacement weather stripping is covered under the life time warranty.

Here’s a few additional notes about the replacement of the weather stripping on my vinyl windows. It took about 30-45 minutes per window to clean the tracks, replace all of the weather stripping on both sashes and on the screen. American Craftsman sold the brand to Ply Gem. The current number to call for replacement parts is 1-888-504-0005. The reps were helpful and I received the parts I needed quickly.

I was told that the 8500 series window sashes are still supported. The frames are not. It was implied that if I wanted to replace the weather stripping I should do it now if I wanted the parts. I feel that rehabilitating the windows was worth the time spent. I am hoping to get another 15-20 years out of them.

One of the double window panes did leak, not bad only 1 out of 12 windows that were installed. I was sent a new sash. The new sash was a little different that the original, but it fit fine. I presume that this is the new version of the American Craftsman windows. It was made more cheaply than the old ones. To me that confirmed my decision to refurbish the windows.

I also had two of the constant balances break on a sash. I will make a video showing how to replace those. Free parts also provided under warranty.

All of the sashes weather stripping for the 8500 series appeared to be identical to the 2 Silver Line windows that the previous home owner installed in 1997. Those windows are installed on a north wall. They are also in good condition. I had to replace the weather strip on the lower frame of both of those windows. It was crumbling after 23 years.
