If I’ve heard it once, I’ve heard it a thousand times. The only legal ground rod must be installed at least 8 feet above the ground. The length of the rod and the tubular electrode is 250.52 (A) (5) in 2017National Electrical Code (NEC). See Figures 1 and 2 for required parts.

However, what if I told you it wasn’t quite true? What if there was one case, or maybe two, where a 5 foot ground rod would be acceptable? To find this elusive information, one must refer to the following chapters ofNEC. To understand why these different lengths exist, you need to know the history.

NEC Clause 250 – Ground Rod 8 ft.

Section 250 covers general electrical equipment grounding and grounding requirements. Sections 250.52 (A)(1) through (A)(7) instruct the user that all grounding electrodes present in each building or structure served must be bonded together to form the system grounding electrode. . Where such grounding electrodes do not exist, one or more of the grounding electrodes specified in 250.52(A)(4) through (A)(8) shall be installed and used (see Figure 3).

Information on grounding electrodes can be found in 250.52. In this section, the different types of grounding electrodes are explained in detail. This article deals with the point located at 250.52(A)(5). See the language below as well as Figure 4.

(5) Rod and tube electrode. Rod and tube electrodes are no less than 2.44 m (8 ft) in length and must include the following materials.

(a) Pipe or conduit grounding electrodes shall not be less than metric number 21 (trade size 3∕4) and in the case of steel the exterior surface shall be of the galvanized or metal coated for corrosion protection.

(b) Stainless steel and copper or zinc-coated steel grounding electrodes shall be at least 15.87 mm (5∕8 in.) in diameter, unless otherwise specified. (NEC 2017)

Journey to NEC Chapter 8 – Find the 5 foot earth bar

Now here’s the news you’ve all been waiting for. Where can I find this “Members Only, Highly Classified” information on how a 5 foot ground rod can be installed? I got tired of driving the ground rods 8 feet into the ground. This information could save me years, not to mention money. Is it so simple? Is there a place that allows me to install shorter ground rods for my electrical service?

The answer is “Yes, No and No so fast.” It is necessary to understandNECto understand where these 5 foot ground rods are allowed and under what specific circumstances.

Item 800 is titled “Communication Channels”. The purpose of this article is to cover various communication circuits and devices. Section 800.2 defines a communications circuit as a circuit that extends voice, audio, video, data, interactive services, telegraph (other than radio), external wiring for fire and burglar alarms to a communication service to the customer’s communication equipment up to and including terminal equipment such as telephones, fax machines or answering machines. This article does not comply with the requirements of chapters 1 to 7 of theNECexcept where requirements are specifically cited in Chapter 8 (see Figure 8).

theNECconsist of various parts; which we must examine next in Part IV entitled “Method of Grounding”. Section 800.100 deals with the bonding and grounding of cables and primary protectors. Here it is stated that the main protector and metal parts of the cable sheath must be bonded or grounded as specified in 800.100(A) through 800.100(D).

If you are looking for the requirements for ground electrodes, these are found in 800 100 (B). This section specifies that the bonding conductor or the earth electrode conductor must be connected in accordance with 800.100(B)(1), 800.100(B)(2) or 800.100(B)(3). See the information contained in 800.100(B)(3).

(3) In buildings or structures without means of grounding or terminating links between systems. If the building or structure to be served does not have a means of grounding or an inter-system interconnection terminal, as described in 800.100(B)(2), the electrode conductor of ground must be connected to one of the following:

(1) For any of the individual earth connections described in 250.52 (A) (1), (A) (2), (A) (3) or (A) (4).

(2) If the building or structure served does not have interconnecting terminals between systems or any means of grounding, as described in 800.100(B)(2) or (B)(3) (1 ), with one of the individual grounding electrodes described in 250.52(A)(7) and (A)(8) or a ground rod or conduit at least 1.5 m (5 ft. ) and 12.7 mm (1∕2 in) in diameter, driven, if possible, to permanently wet ground and separated from the conductors of the lightning protection system as mentioned in 800.53 and at least 1.8 m ( 6 ft) from the electrodes of other systems. Steam conductors, hot water pipes or lightning protection systems should not be used as electrodes for protectors and grounded metal parts. (NEC 2017)

Well, have you ever seen it? One of the locations indicates the use and installation of a 5 foot ground rod. However, have you also seen the specificities of this language? First, this is only permitted if the building or structure has no means of grounding or termination between systems. In this case, a 5 foot long ground rod is allowed.

Ground Stake or Pipe:

  1. not less than 1.5 m (5 ft) in length and 12.7 mm (1/2 in) in diameter;
  2. , if possible, to introduce in a permanently moist ground; and
  3. separated from the conductors of the lightning protection system as mentioned in 800.53 and at least 1.8 m (6 ft) from other electrodes in the system.

Other uses of the 5ft ground rod are covered by Clause 830, which includes mains powered broadband communication systems. These systems provide any combination of voice, audio, video, data and interaction services through a network interface unit (NIU).

A typical basic system configuration consists of a cable that supplies power and a broadband signal to a network interface unit that converts the broadband signal to component signals. Typical cables are coaxial cable with both wideband signal and power on the center conductor, composite metal cable with one or more coaxial elements or twisted pair elements for wideband signals, and a unit twisted pair for power, and a composite fiber with a pair of electrical conductors. Larger systems may also include network components such as amplifiers that require network power.

Article 830 covers various sections. In Section IV of Article 830 you will find grounding methods. The language here says that the network interface units containing the shield, the NIU with the metal enclosure, the main shield and the metal components of the broadband communication cable that feeds the network are designed for bonding or grounding ground must be connected as specified in 830.100 (A) through 830.100(D).

Electrode information is also located at 830 100 (B). Consider the language at 830,100(B)(3)(2).

(3) In buildings or structures without means of grounding or terminating links between systems.
If the building or structure being served does not have a means of grounding or an inter-system interconnection terminal, as described in 830.100(B)(2), the ground electrode conductor must be connected in one of the following ways:

(1) For any of the individual earth connections described in 250.52 (A) (1), (A) (2), (A) (3) or (A) (4).

(2) If the building or service structure does not have an interconnecting termination point between the systems or any means of grounding, as described in 830.100(B)(2) or (B)(3 ) (1), with one of the individual electrode ground electrodes described in 250.52(A)(7) and (A)(8), or grounding rods or pipes at least 1 .5 m (5 ft) and 12.7 mm (1∕2 in) in diameter, checked, if possible, in permanently wet ground and separated from down-conductors in accordance with 800.53 and at least 1, 8 m (6 ft) from the electrodes of other systems. Steam, hot water, or lightning protection systems should not be used as ground electrodes for protectors, NIUs with built-in protection, grounded metal parts, NIUs with metal enclosures and other devices. (NEC 2017)

Figure 9 attempts to represent the requirements in Clause 250 and the requirements in Clauses 800 and 830 regarding the use of an 8 foot or 5 foot ground rod.

History of the 5 foot ground rod

Rumor has it that the 5 foot ground rod length only exists because that is the length of the space in the back of Bell Telephone service vehicles. However, is this really true? Research provided to me by Mr. William McCoy of Telco Sales, Inc., representing the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), shows that there is scientific research on the use of these rods. Research indicates that the widespread use of the 5-pin pin is used for short circuit relay protectors and is considered satisfactory under normal ground conditions (see Figure 10).

By studying the history ofNEC, I also found that the first 8 foot length specified for a ground rod was found in 1940NEC. In the year 1937NEC, a language exists for earth connections accepted at 2571 for water pipes and at 2572 for artificial earth. The text here refers to artificial soil as soil with an electrode consisting of a drive pipe, guide rod, burial plate or any other device approved for this purpose. No further information is provided to the code user regarding the required length of this rod (see Figure 11).

During the 1940sNEC, the installation requirement is set to 2583 for the artificial electrode. One of the regulations is that the rod must be brought to a depth of at least 8 feet, regardless of the size or number of electrodes used. See Figure 12 for details.

For younger Code users, here are photos from 1937 and 1940NECformerly owned by Mr. Cecil T. Jones. Interestingly, the 1937 version was the addition of electrical giants such as Cutler-Hammer, Inc., Square D Company, Trumbull Electric Manufacturing Company, and Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company.

In the first project period for 2020NEC, I submitted a public contribution asking the code generator (CMP) responsible for chapter 8 ofNECfor consistency, removing the 5 foot rod length and replacing it with the 8 foot length in both sections mentioned above. I was a little shocked that the two CMP-16 cases resolved or denied my request.

The 8 foot requirement is not specific to Section 250; There are two positions in Chapter 8 that allow for a lower rod length, but for very specific installations. Members of CMP-16 contacted me and provided me with instructions and history for this length reduction. Many thanks to people like Tom Moore, William McCoy and Jeff Sargent for information that helped create this article.

Hopefully, if you’ve ever had similar concerns, this article has provided you with some insight into the answer to why different lengths exist.
