When someone close to you loses a loved one, you want to do something to express your condolences and announce that you are grieving alongside your friend. Giving sympathy gifts is one way to do this.

Of course, you’ll also want to be thoughtful in what you say and do; It’s important to think carefully about gift ideas for a bereaved friend so that your gift is valued and appreciated.

To help you, we’ve rounded up these 10 heartwarming sympathy gift ideas for a grieving friend. These memorial gifts will help you express your love and willingness to support them during this difficult time.

First, some tips to help you choose the right gift.

Choose the right sympathy gift

There are several angles you can consider when choosing a sympathetic gift for your grieving friend.

You can go with aPracticegifts, like a handy gift basket of household items or a large supply of Costco-sized toilet paper. (Yes, they will. No one wants to go to the store in town after losing a loved one.)

You can go with adecadent gifts, such as fine wine, fine chocolate, expensive memorial jewelry, or a day at the spa. A sympathetic gift lets the recipient know they’re special, even when they’re grieving, and that you have their back no matter how they feel.

Another popular angle is to give apersonalizedgift. Bird feeders, blankets, and custom tillers are good examples. (See articles

Finally, you can provide asympathygift. You know the type: flowers, a memorial plaque, a candle, a picture frame, a necklace. Classic sympathy gifts show your sincere love and affection for the deceased and your grieving friend, and are always a great choice when you’re not sure what to buy.

Each of these types of sympathy gifts could be appropriate for you to give to your grieving friend. It depends on who they are, who you are, and your relationship.

Ideas for funeral gifts instead of flowers

Flowers are a great gift for a grieving friend. However, some people don’t like the fact that the flower will eventually lose its bloom, wilt and die. For some it is an unwanted reminder of the death of their loved one.

Traditionally, this has actually been an important and symbolic feature of the sympathy flower. It’s a reality check to help the grieving person face things head on. The flowers represent a life cycle in miniature – they bloom brightly, then slowly fade until it’s time for them to rest. The fact that flowers are so fragile reminds us of the fragility of this life and helps us cherish it as a gift.

However, many people prefer to send something other than flowers when choosing a gift for a grieving friend. Maybe you know they have lots of flowers, or maybe you want something more meaningful and personal, or maybe you just want to stand out from the crowd with a unique gift idea. . If that’s your instinct, go for it!

You know your friend best, so choose what’s right for you. Of course, you’ll be Googling a few things to make sure you’re saying the right things (or not saying the wrong things…read itfor assistance in these areas). And you read this article to guide you to the best gift ideas. We’ve got plenty of suggestions to help you out, so browse through them until you find the perfect sympathy gift for your friend.

The loss of a loved one can leave partners, friends, and family devastated. To ease the burden, offer whatever solace you can.

Step 1: Allow them to grieve

Allow the person to grieve in their own way. Don’t judge their behavior, which may be erratic at first. Unpredictable moods are normal.

Tip

If you tend to be a caretaker, now is the time to dial it back. You can’t fix this.

Step 2: Show empathy

Comfort the grieving person with genuine sympathy for their loss without assuming to know how they feel. Avoid giving advice.

Step 3: Change the environment

Suggest a walk or a drive to remove them from their environment for a short time. They will need their strength in the coming days, so a little relief might be appreciated.

Step 4: Listen and absorb

Listen and absorb any need they may have to dwell on the past or obsess about regrets regarding the loved one. Right now they need to vent and your unconditional regard is crucial.

Step 5: Take on tasks

Offer to take over everyday tasks, like grocery shopping, child care, phone calls, and final arrangements if the grieving person was a family member or very close to the deceased. Running interference and handling phone calls will save their energy and will allow them time to think or rest.

Step 6: Support them with silence

Support them with silence and hold their hand or hug them. Don’t push them to express emotion, even if their brave smile seems to suggest that something is being repressed.

Tip

It will take time to get through the loss. Don’t stop checking on them and offering your shoulder — even months later.

Step 7: Get clinical help

Suggest clinical help if the person seems unable to come out of it, especially if they demonstrate difficulty functioning, thinking, acting, or speaking, or they exhibit excessive bitterness, substance abuse, or social withdrawal.
