Making tomato stakes

In the construction and repair department there is always a queue. Work usually has one of three levels of urgency: immediate (fix it or we can’t go on!), it would be really nice to do it soon, and when a little longer (and that’s usually the way of falling). Today, he completes a job on time: driving in more wooden stakes for the tomatoes. Last year I bought a pile of wood chips, 10-12 feet long, roughly cut to about 2 inches square, at a very low price, from a local sawmill. This year we found that hitting stakes made of this thing with one foot in the ground requires a lot of hammer force, especially when riding in dry ground. Reducing them a little made a BIG difference. Using a barnyard table saw, we shaved to about 1/2 length each, rolled up with maybe 80 1-1/2″ square stakes. All in all, it takes a few hours to save more in this area, not to mention energy, sweat, frustration. It’s the little things that really make all the difference! (Also in the photo, painted white, an old door has been scraped in timeExpanding dairy, and a nice sturdy pallet (probably from the seed potato delivery), both of which were repurposed in the restroom area as compost, an IWBRGHTDS project.)

More than that…

Method #1: “Patience” – Push the stake in the ground as much as possible and wait. Once it rains, or after I water my plants, I push it in a little further. Wait for rain again and push it in more. I’ve found that once the ground dries out, the stakes are very difficult to remove.

What is a wooden stake?

A stake is a wooden stick, sharpened on one end and used to mark property lines (or slay a vampire). In the Middle Ages, people would gamble by placing their bets on wooden posts, or stakes.

Cutting angles can be done on table saws, bandsaws or miter saws and for nice clean edges, and angles that are quite narrow, the mitre saw, also known as a chop saw, is best, but to make safe, consistent cuts it’s best to use a jig that your wood is clamped firmly to and this Miter Saw Angle Jig is perfect for those kinds of angle cuts, allowing you to easily make projects like wood stakes.
