Best Orchid Fertilizer

There are no less than 13 nutrients that orchids need to produce delicate flowers and beautiful foliage. The three most important nutrients are nitrogen for leaf growth, phosphorus for healthy root and shoot growth, and potassium to cope with environmental changes (such as pests and climate) and to maintain the overall health.

Nutritious food for orchids

All orchid fertilizers are labeled with an N-P-K ratio. It is an indicator of the amount of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) present in the product. Since each of these nutrients is responsible for a different zone of an orchid’s growth, it is important to consider why you are buying orchid fertilizer and how your orchid is currently doing at any stage of development.

For example, orchids need a potassium-rich formula during flower development and in full bloom, and a nitrogen-rich formula after the flowers die in the vegetative stage.

In addition to nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, check your orchid’s ingredient list to see if it contains calcium, magnesium, and sulfur. A good fertilizer will provide a wide range of nutrients needed for cell division, respiration and growth.

orchid fertilizer 20-20-20

An orchid fertilizer with aN-P-K ratio 20-20-20will provide a balance of nutrients for terrestrial orchids, but is not sustainable for epiphytes grown in soilless media such as bark. Indeed, the bark lacks nitrogen naturally present in the soil. Simply put, if you are growing your orchid on something other than soil, choose an orchid food that contains a higher percentage of nitrogen. Only use 20 20 20 Orchid Fertilizer if you know your orchid is one of more than 200 terrestrial varieties that grow perfectly well in soil.

What fertilizers are available for purchase?

There are many varieties of orchid fertilizer, each offering different methods you can use. The most common options are concentrated liquids or water-soluble granules that can be added to water. The added benefit of adding orchid food to your water is that you can water your orchids at the same time you feed them.

Spicy plant food is an alternative method of feeding your orchid and provides a slow, no-mess storage option. They can be added directly to potting soil so no mixing or measuring is necessary. The thorns come off gradually and are effective for 2 to 9 months. This is a great option if you have children or pets as they are buried out of sight and out of reach.

Advantage

  • Instantly replenish moisture and nutrients
  • Good for terrestrial orchids
  • No dilution required

Fault

  • Can damage orchids if unfortunately misted

The beauty of this fertilizer is that it requires no dilution and comes in a convenient spray bottle that makes it easy to dispense directly into the roots, potting, and leaves (yes, leaves!) of your plants. . It’s a great way to instantly provide nutrients and moisture to your orchid.

I’ve used it on a few phalaenopsis orchids which unfortunately haven’t bloomed for a while. I have to admit I was skeptical about spraying this orchid food on the leaves, knowing how easily orchid leaves can burn, but I needn’t have worried. The results are fast, spectacular and completely harmless to the leaves.

A word of warning: Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations to avoid spraying this substance on your orchids. I started with the pass-through approach to misting with this and unfortunately lost a few flowers along the way.

Using:Mist your orchid weekly throughout the growing season and water between feedings. The spray action creates a light mist that helps keep leaves and roots moist. It’s a quick and easy way to boost nutrients directly into plants and pots. I am very impressed that my orchid does not need additional feeding.

Customer Reviews: Fast and impressive results with new growth appearing within weeks. This is great for quickly reviving abandoned orchids, especially terrestrial varieties that don’t require high doses of nitrogen.

Fault

  • Hard if abused

If your orchid hasn’t bloomed in a while and seems to need tending to encourage new growth, let me recommend this orchid food from The Sun Bulb Company. This fertilizer not only promotes the growth of new shoots, but also improves the vibrancy and longevity of your orchids due to its high phosphorus content.

I use it on my epiphytes throughout the growing season to help replace nutrients that are lacking in low soil growing media. The result is healthier plants and bigger blooms, so it’s no wonder this product earned a spot on our best orchid fertilizer list.

Using:Mix granular formula with water monthly throughout the growing season. I find it dilute quickly and easily which is very convenient for me and then soaks into both the foliage and the bark of my orchid.

Customer Feedback:Mature plants bloom bigger and brighter and users are impressed with the rapid rate of new growth after a short period of use. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for the frequency and dosage of this fertilizer as it can be harmful if used in excess.

3. EarthPods Orchid Plant Food Fertilizer Spikes 2-2-4

Advantage

  • Contains 100% natural ingredients

Check prices

Advantage

  • Contains no harmful chemicals so it is safe to use around children and pets
  • Dispenser has a convenient lid that makes fertilizing mess-free

Fault

  • Mistake

Followed by an organic liquid orchid food from an old favorite of mine, Espoma. This company seems to have balanced the organic ingredients correctly and still managed to charge a fair price. This is a brand I come back to again and again. The high percentage of phosphorus in this recipe means you can expect your orchids to grow more vigorously, last longer, and maintain their vibrant color when in bloom.

Using:The easy-fill lid means feeding your orchid is easy and mess-free. Simply tilt the bottle upside down to expertly dispense the exact amount needed to mix with 1 gallon of water. This solution immediately dissolves and is ready to be poured over the bark of your orchid.

I like to soak the bark of my orchids with water before feeding them and always make sure all the fertilizer liquid is completely drained before putting the orchid back in its pot. Repeat every 3-4 weeks and boom! Your orchid will flower quickly.

Customer Feedback:Read the instructions on the bottle to avoid spillage with the new cap dispenser. Several reviewers were surprised by the smell of this product. Hey, it’s your nature.

  • Apply directly to the potting intestine without diluting it in water

Fault

  • Products considered ostentatious

These Miracle-Gro Orchid Food Spikes allow you to fertilize. They provide a carefully balanced N-P-K ratio of 10-10-10, making them an excellent choice as a fertilizer for phalaenopsis or any other terrestrial orchid for that matter.

The slow-release formula means you’ll only need to change the tips every two months and won’t need to use them outside of the growing season. I have seen great results year round using this product. The flowers bloom profusely during the growing season and the foliage remains lush throughout.

I love that the nibs are individually packaged in a handy blister pack, which is great for avoiding any irritants to little hands or feet.

Using:Simply take a twig from the griddle and cut it in half. Gently press the bulb in the middle of the body and on the edge of the pot. Water regularly to distribute nutrients directly into the soil and near the base.

Customer Feedback:This product is not recommended for use outside of the growing season and users say their orchids continue to thrive throughout the year. Some users say these spikes are wrapped in wrappers and are for show.

This 3-1-2 N-P-K Organic Fertilizer is an all-purpose, ready-to-use fertilizer from the Houseplant Resource Center. It’s gentle enough to use every time you water and will provide your orchid with all the nutrients it needs to thrive all year round.

I like the versatility of this fertilizer. It’s a complete solution for all my indoor plant growing needs. It does not contain any harmful impurities that can burn or damage young plants and tender roots. I can just dilute it in a watering can and use it to water and feed all the plants in my house all at once.

Customer Comment: This product is a cost effective way to meet the feeding and watering needs of all your indoor plants. It does an excellent job of encouraging new growth and vibrant blooms for most houseplants.

7. Florikan Dynamite Orchid Fertilizer

Advantage

  • Can be used for bromeliads as well as orchids
  • The release delay lasted 9 months

Fault

  • May not help restore weakened orchids that require extra care and attention

Fertilizing your orchid weekly or monthly is not an option for some people. If you’re one of those people who tends to forget to eat or just doesn’t have the time, this might be what you’re looking for.

Florikan Dynamite Fertilizer for Orchids and Bromeliads is an excellent slow-release product, which means you only have to remember to feed the plant once during the active growing season. A high percentage of potassium (10-10-17) means that your orchid and Bromeliads will be encouraged to flower more throughout the year as the slow dissolving fertilizer granules take effect.

What a relief to know that your orchid’s nutritional needs can be taken care of all at once!

Using:You will need to know the size of your orchid pot before measuring and sprinkling the slow dissolving seeds in and around the middle. All that is needed for the next nine months is regular watering and admiring the new growth and gorgeous blooms. What could be simpler than that?

Customer Feedback:This is a great product for those who don’t have the time or are a little distracted by regular eating.

8. Grow More Orchid Fertilizer Without Urea 20-10-20

Check prices

Advantage

  • Work immediately to stimulate new growth and produce long-lasting, healthy blooms
  • Free urea

Fault

  • Hard if abused

This Grow More orchid food with a balanced NPK ratio of 20-10-20 will work immediately to provide all the nutrition your orchid needs to grow lush foliage and bloom.

One of the advantages of this product over other orchid fertilizers is that it does not contain urea. While urea is a valuable source of nitrogen for plants, it requires organisms in the soil to convert the nitrogen into a usable form. And since many orchids grow in the bark of trees and not in the ground, epiphytes have no way of taking advantage of this precious element.

Using:I find that a little goes a long way with this granular fertilizer. The granules are water soluble and dissolve quickly and easily in water. For weekly fertilizing, I mix up to 1 teaspoon of seeds with 1 gallon of water. I carefully soak my orchid bark with the solution and let it drain from the pot into the sink before putting the orchid back in the pot. This way I can water and feed at the same time and don’t have to water separately between feedings.

I tend to skip feedings every four weeks and use purified water instead. This helps remove any residual salt buildup that may be harmful to my orchid.

Customer Feedback:It is a high value product that should be used sparingly throughout the growing season. Some users noticed that when they received this product at home, it was compacted into a solid mass in the container, which made it difficult to dose in the desired amount.

Top tips for choosing the right orchid food

When buying orchid fertilizer, read the label and look for the following ingredients: nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and sulfur. Always avoid products containing urea. Indeed, the nitrogen contained in urea needs soil organisms to convert into a form easily assimilated by plants. Normally, tropical orchids do not grow in soil, so urea fertilization is ineffective.

Preferably, a specialized orchid fertilizer or houseplant fertilizer that is watered down or attenuated applied weekly throughout the growing season will be more beneficial than high doses applied once a month. This is because orchids can be very sensitive to fertilizers and too much fertilizer will burn the roots. Your orchid will thank you for frequent but gentle fertilization.

How to Fertilize Orchids

Step 1.Take your plant out of the pot and put the plasticorchid potsin your sink or bucket. Before applying 10-30-20 or an equivalent fertilizer to your orchid, mix it with half the amount of water for outdoor orchids. For indoor orchids, mix a quarter teaspoon of fertilizer with a gallon of water.

2nd step.Prepare the fertilizer for your orchid according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Most water-soluble orchid fertilizers call for 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of seeds to 1 gallon of water or 1/2 to 1 capful of liquid concentrate to 1 gallon of water. Remember that it is better to fertilize too little, so use it sparingly.

Step 3.Before using the fertilizer solution, thoroughly soak the orchid substrate with water.

Step 4.Using a watering can, slowly pour your fertilizer solution over the orchid’s substrate. Make sure you don’t put any fertilizer on your orchid’s foliage to avoid problems with mold or fungus developing on the leaves.

Step 5.After applying the fertilizer solution, let the orchid dry completely. The last thing you want is for your beloved orchid to sit in a tank of fertilizer. Wait 3 or 4 minutes for the plant to drain before putting it back in the decorative container.

Step 6. Do not water the orchid on fertilizing days because the water has mixed with the fertilizer. An orchid that is overwatered will not last long!

Orchids need to be replenished with nutrients, so it is best to fertilize this method regularly. One caveat, however, is that orchids are very susceptible to damage from sodium buildup from fertilizers and water. To eliminate any buildup of this potentially harmful mineral, you can replace the fertilizer solution with water once every four meals.

How long to feed your orchid?

As a general rule, feed your orchid weekly during active growing seasons (spring and summer) using the method above and once a month during off seasons (fall and winter).

The best time to give your orchid food?

Fertilization is most effective immediately after soaking or watering the orchid’s bark thoroughly. While the bark is still wet, you can pour the fertilizer solution over the wet bark and let it drain before putting the tree back in the pot. This will allow the bark and roots to open up slightly to absorb enough fertilizer without saturating.

When to Fertilize for Orchids to Bloom

Most orchid varieties bloom once or twice a year. Their delicate flowers are very sensitive to fertilizers, especially during the budding and flowering phases. When the plant flowers, you should reduce the amount of fertilizer by applying 1/4 strength (1/4 teaspoon per gallon of water). Fertilize the budding orchid every 3-4 weeks during the blooming season.

Should I fertilize orchids in winter?

It depends on the type of orchid you are growing. For example, Phalaenopsis orchids grow year-round, so you need to keep feeding them through the winter months. However, the dose of fertilizer should be reduced. Since in winter the weather is colder and there is less sun to promote leaf and root growth, your orchid will grow more slowly and therefore require fewer nutrients. Reduce fertilizing frequency to once every 4 weeks during winter months and feed at half intensity.

Verdict: The Best Fertilizer for Orchids

To be fair, orchids are delicate and complex in nature, requiring only a little care and attention. However, with just a little know-how about the best orchid fertilizer to choose and how and when to use it, your orchid will thrive and thrive for a long time.

It is important to always use special orchid fertilizers at the beginning, as they are suited for the nutrient needs of orchids. You can chose powder, or liquid orchid fertilizers.

If you want to be extra safe, you can always use half the amount recommended and see how your orchid reacts. If everything goes well, you can start dosing the recommended amount.

Always flush the pot and medium thoroughly with plain water. This will remove possible salt build ups and keep your orchid’s roots healthier!

Always fertilizer when you water orchids, following the tutorial above. Never add the fertilizer undiluted, it will damage the roots!

I use the MSU fertilizer for the past 3 years and I really like it! It has a complete menu of nutrients and suits my watering possibilities. You can find it for sale at rePotme here
