Multi-read content how to keep cedar fence looking new

If you haven’t noticed, it’s very hot. I am only mentioning the weather, as it plays an important role in the quality of your cedar fence. This includes heat, sun, rain, and even man-made “weather conditions” like watering your lawn or using pool chemicals. Proper care can keep wood looking like new for many years. And because cedar can’t be treated, it can also save you costly repairs, as untreated wood will suffer more damage from the elements.

To keep your cedar fence looking its best, here are some helpful tips:

  • Do not use lawn/pool chemicals or sprinklers near your cedar fence. Although cedar is naturally water resistant, it is not waterproof. Continuous exposure to chemicals and water can shorten its lifespan.
  • You never want to use Clear Water Sealer or anything transparent on Cedar. You want to use high quality teak oil. If you are going to oil the wood, you must plan the wood before installing the clamps. (According to Kevin O’Connor of “This Old House”). However, there are many websites that clearly explain how to apply sealant. BUT, clear, non-plasticizing and film-forming finishes such as lacquer, shellac, urethane and varnish are not recommended for external use on cedar. UV radiation will penetrate the clear film (even in the presence of UV inhibitors) and degrade the wood surface. No matter how many coats you apply, the finish will eventually become brittle, then crack and blister – and eventually fail. If you decide to use polyurethane or a similar clear finish, don’t say we didn’t warn you.
  • It is possible to “refresh” the appearance of cedars that have turned gray. First, spray the fence with a power cleaner at 1,500 to 2,000 pounds per square inch pressure. This level of pressure should not damage the wood. Hold the nozzle 18 inches from the surface of the fence and move the nozzle evenly over the entire fence. Don’t linger too long in one area. The outer gray layers will wash away, revealing the redwood below. Wear old clothes and goggles as the spray will cause the fence to bounce back towards you. Next, mix 3 liters of lukewarm water and 1 liter of oxygen bleach in a bucket. Spray the solution on the fence with a garden sprayer, leave for 10 minutes. Scrub the fence with a scrub brush to remove mildew and dirt. Rinse the fence with clean water when you’re done. Fence in sections so that the oxygen bleach does not dry out before scrubbing. Wear rubber gloves to protect your hands. Wash the fence every year in spring or early summer.
  • And finally, don’t forget the structural aspects of your fence. Every 6 months, be sure to check the fence for looseness. Tighten or replace any loose or missing screws or nails.
