How to get rid of soap scum in the bathtub and the washing machine

By wetTweeter

Soap scum – this is one of the biggest headaches. Very hard to clean and it keeps coming back!

Soap is not just soap. It is a combination of water, minerals, soap powder and body oil. All bind together to form a film or gooey coating that clings to surfaces in baths, kitchens and laundry rooms.

Read on to find out how to get rid of soap scum from your bathtub and washing machine.

What is soap scum?

First, a quick chemistry lesson – soap is made by combining animal or vegetable fats and oils with an alkali. The alkali is usually sodium hydroxide (NaOH) or potassium hydroxide (KOH).

Heating fats and oils together and adding liquid lye causes a mixing process called saponification to react. Final result? Soap!

Great-grandmother’s soap recipes often list three ingredients – lard (tallow), lye (sodium hydroxide), and water, heated over an open flame.

Soap scum is a combination of soap and minerals present in the water. These minerals bind to soap to create a tough film on bathtubs, kitchens and laundry rooms.

Sinks, tubs, showers, shower curtains, shower doors, and the inside of washing machines are places where soap scum often hides.

This gray and whitekind of foamalso contains other non-marketable substances such as body oils, dirt, dead skin and anything that might float in your tub. Scrub! If not removed, the soap scum will eventually attract mildew.

You will know when this is happening because the soap scum is discoloring and starting to smell. Ouch! Also, the longer you leave the soap scum on, the harder it is to remove.

Why does soap scum come back after I remove it?

Hard water can contribute to soap scum because it contains mineral salts. So, soap scum forms when wet soap interacts with minerals in tap water.

These minerals combine with diluted bath soap to form a film or scum on surfaces.

A way forMinimize soap scumis to soften tap water. Indoor water softening systems can prevent soap scum from forming. Plus, soft water has additional benefits.

Your soap will also lather better and cleaner.

Are some surfaces more prone to soap scum than others?

Soap scum without a cocoon. It will beshow anywheresoap meets water on a regular basis.

Bathroom doors seem to accumulate more soap scum than other surfaces, but this may be due to the transparency of the glass. However, the cloudy film on your bathroom door is easier to detect than on a transparent surface.

Can liquid soap or shower gel cause soap scum?

In fact, it’s best to use liquid soap in the shower. Soaps contain talcum powder and fatty acids which help create soap scum.

When you switch to liquid soap or body wash, you will notice less residue.
