Are there any side effects?

While some of Truvia’s ingredients have been studied, the sweetener itself has not.

A four-week human study using high doses of rebaudioside A found no adverse side effects. However, this study was funded by Cargill, the company that makes Truvia (9).

Meanwhile, a recent study noted that ingesting erythritol is toxic to common fruit flies. The authors even recommend erythritol as an environmentally safe pesticide (Ten).

Although these findings raise concerns, humans and other mammals appear to tolerate erythritol.

That said, sugar alcohols like erythritol can cause digestive issues.

Erythritol appears to be processed better than other sugar alcohols because it does not reach your large intestine in appreciable amounts (11).

In one study, gastrointestinal symptoms only appeared after digesting 50 grams of erythritol — a very large amount — in a single dose (twelfth).

In another trial, it took at least 4 times as much erythritol to cause diarrhea as sorbitol, a commonly consumed sugar alcohol (13).

Remember that tolerance varies from individual to individual. If you have problems with sugar alcohols, be especially careful with Truvia.

That said, regular use of Truvia shouldn’t cause digestive issues for most people – at least not if consumed in reasonable amounts.

SummaryThe main ingredients of Truvia are very safe to consume and have few side effects. However, tolerance may vary from individual to individual.

Popular questions about what is truvia sweetener

what is truvia sweetener?

Truvia is a commercial product created by the Coca-Cola Company and the food and chemical company Cargill. It is made from refined stevia. It is used as a sweetener for cooked or baked products and as a tabletop sweetener that you might add to coffee.

Is there a difference between stevia and Truvia?

Both come from the stevia plant, but Truvia is a bit more processed and has additional ingredients including erythritol and natural sweeteners. Otherwise, there are minimal differences; both products are calorie-free and do not cause tooth decay seen with other sweeteners.

Why is Truvia not good for you?

Adding too much Truvia to foods may cause an upset stomach in some people. More importantly, Truvia may alter the body’s natural metabolic response to sweets. That is, when you consume Truvia, the sweet taste can activate sugar receptors to prime your body to metabolize or break down the sweetener.

Is Truvia the same as aspartame?

Truvia tabletop sweetener is marketed to consumers as a packet sweetener for food and beverages. This makes it a direct competitor to existing packet sweeteners Splenda (sucralose), Equal (aspartame), Sweet’n Low (saccharin), and table sugar.

Does Truvia have any side effects?

The lovely side effects of this include gastric distress, diarrhea, cramping, gas and bloating… Truvia is only about 1/2 of 1% rebiana. This is the only reason Truvia can mention anything about stevia in their marketing – because rebiana is derived from the stevia plant.

Which is better Splenda or Truvia?

Neither will affect your blood sugar levels. Nutritionally speaking, there is not much difference in these two products, so I can’t say which is better. If you prefer something more natural, then you should choose Truvia. If you’re looking for one you can use to bake with, go for Splenda’s Sugar Blend.
